Rochelle Jordan’s album was soooo samey i didn’t return to it but she is extremely talented and i can tell she has so much potential

also ddd I just got into LA DI DA the other day and i totally get what you’re saying about You can’t sit with us, which over was definitely a cringefest lyrically. LA DI DA’s excellent melody made me overlook the questionable lines however.  :dies:

Ultimate ass-shaker of 2021, infectiously catchy and sexy. At first I thought it's a bit lacking and was hoping for some good rap feature to elevate it, but it quickly grew and I'm still listening to it all the time.

Yep can confirm I was one of the people who forgot about Easy. It came on shuffle a couple of weeks ago and I was reminded of its excellence :jonny5:

Exactly like we don't talk about it enough!

Blast Off is a lovely album closer, wraps things up so nicely. Easy (Remix) :jamming: Don't worry, I had it on my rotation for a while! Not sure which version I prefer tbh. Broods oprah-gif-oprah.gif Yeah POMM is another serve... yup... yup || You can't sit with us really does have a lazy hook :rip: Something feels off about Abittipsy's chorus as well. Lovemonth sounds cute, I'm liking some of these city pop releases.

Stan BROODS :jonny2:

Citypop better overtake mainstream kpop soon enough, Lady by Yubin is still one of the best kpop songs ever :allears:

Easy Remix is so good, I do kinda forgot about it before BO section, but it hasn’t aged a day :jonny:

I knew yall forgot, cause it was nowhere to be found on everyone's lists :jonny2:

The Easy remix is beautiful, but I have to admit that it really came and went. I was disappointed by how repetitive Silk Sonic's album turned out to be and I only listened to it once, therefore I don't even remember how this one goes.

The Feels is simply horrendous in English. Thankfully, they saved it by including its Korean version on CDs, which transformed it into a bop! You can't sit with us, Lovemonth and Queendom were blessings this year. I haven't heard Abittipsy yet, I need to check it out. Perched for the remaining top 5! :gaycat4:

It came and went cause you haven't streamed :gaycat4:

I wouldn't say it's horrendous (especially if you compare their english or the lyrics to like BTS recent releases), but Korean version is all it needed to be :gaycat4:

The top 5 is gonna be pretty predictable I fear

I’ve had the Easy Remix on RIHpeat as well. Both the original and remix are perfect :jonny:

Just listened to The Taeyeon song and it’s literally Say So 2.0, I stan! Lemme add it to my playlist :santa:

NN stan it, it's very innocent and light version of Say So

I get it, I love listening to it at night

I hate when they just put random English hooks for the sake of it as if Korean's can't cringe to them :skull:

Pirate is an improvement from First for sure, but it missed the deadline nn, we will see next year!

It's 100% the tea, love PP and how she is working with Mura Mara even, but Rochelle ate her this year.

Sunmi EP not the highest highs of her abilities, but it's decent

This bombed hard huh, on both charts and year end lists, but I struggle to see why. It's an excellent song that feels like natural progression from the After Hours / Blinding Lights sound. Excited for The Dawn is Coming if this song is any indication of its sound.

Just when I was fully convinced they are washed up and over Coldplay surprised me with this absolutely stunning track and their best one in a very long time. I really love long, excessive songs, but they have to offer something throughout and Coloratura really fulfils it all, the song just gets better as it progresses. Sadly nothing else on their garbage album comes close to it and they are still very much washed up and over x

O2nRetC.png

Completely unexpected duo that caught me off guardbut it absolutely works and was a huge step back on track after the very mediocre, generic Love Is Dead. Whole Sceen Violence was great, but How Not To Drown is a step ahead of other songs on the record.

Knew this would be the one from the moment he dropped that snippet on Twitter. Super catchy, pure fire, packed in this fun concept of Nas expressing his sexuality and parodying Biblical myths. And of course it goes without saying, but I'll mention it here, cause I forgot to do it in Wild Side write up - the extended version is much better and it's the one I listen to by default.

Megan was always the best mainstream female rapper for me ever since she appeared, but Thot Shit turned me into a stan. She wasted on time on that beat, her lyrics are always so clever and so catchy and I hope this banger is an indication of her next project, cause Good News as very so-so.

Here comes the best boy-group release of 2021! I already gave a shoutout to very decent Don't Call Me and its great parent project, but Atlantis came like a tsunami shortly after and quickly became my favorite. It's a classic SHINee track for me, a whole groove, their vocals clashing on the hook and that post-chorus is just fantastic.

irPjaRa.png

As the title suggests, this song is just next level and I myself wasn't ready for it when I heard it for the first time and initially labeled it as "disjointed mess". Lord how I switched once it hit me. This experimental masterpiece, this is what we need in K-pop, variation and surprise through unexpected changes in sound. The fact this song has no business being so good on paper, cause who the fuck came up with an idea to rework a Fast & Furious soundtrack from a few years ago and thought it would work? Somehow, they were right, it insanely does.

Vwu2WmL.png

KAI completely unexpectedly dropped one of the best K-Pop projects last year with his debut self-titled mini album so my expectations for this follow up were huge and thankfully he didn't disappoint. While the b-sides are not as good as on KAI the title track is stunning and his best. Excited for him to continue outdoing his bandmates.

EpB7C2x.png

I already expressed how obsessed and amazed by her I am, but INSOMNIA is just YUKIKA at her best. The melodies, her vocals, the instrumentation, all so dreamy, mesmerizing, enchanting. Nothing more to add, pure bliss throughout.

but the K-Pop song of the year title goes to...

Spoiler

cFZtjfI.png

If someone asked me to describe K-Pop as a genre beyond it being just pop music in Korean I would focus on the aspects of this song. Unnatural captures everything I love about mainstream Korean pop music, it's a defining K-Pop song I can't imagine ever getting tired of. It feels like magic! Every section offers something new, every member has a chance to shine. The production is sleek, nothing gets buried or oversaturated. The pre-chorus is probably my favorite part with full-blown instrumentation holding back for a second while keeping the pace of the song just like we hear them singing in the lyrics

'How can I breathe now, now, now?
숨 쉬는 법을 잊은 듯

Feels like I forgot how to breathe
I'm holding my breath
숨이 막혀 난 모두 out of my control'

It's suffocating, everything is out of my control

and then it all explodes in the bombastic, extremely catchy chorus, joyful as hell! It wouldn't be a "defining K-pop song" without some subtle rap-like performance in second verse which works so well and doesn't take away any grace from the song. It's all coming together nicely and the absolute cherry on top is the flawless pre-chorus becoming an extension of the final chorus at the very end making the song reach even higher, even better, ultimate climax.

LNX messing the first set up :fan: Thot Shit is the first song I really enjoyed from Megan, so catchy and her flow is fire on it. Colortura is a little too long for my taste, still like it though. Take My Breath mmm :jamming: How Not to Drown more like how not to SLAY! and they didn't read the directions!! || Atlantis sounds cute! I actually heard Next Level around the time it was released due to word of mouth... I guess it's too ahead of its time for me :keir: I was wondering why Peaches sounded familiar but I think it was on another Best Of (maybe Hug's?) Unnatural seemed nice until the chorus left me unimpressed, which I feel like has happened with a lot of the songs I've tested, the hook either doesn't hit me hard enough or doesn't feel that smooth. :'(

I would've definitely swapped Next Level with Savage and moved Insomnia above Unnatural, but positions aside, I completely agree with your choices for this top 5; they were all some of the very best k-pop songs this year. :gaycat4:
