Debetable. Madonna was going up against Whitney, Michael, Mariah, Celine, Janet + a bunch of rock bands which were so popular during those times. Taylor's only worthy competitors are Adele (who doesn't release much), Drake and maybe Ariana. There aren't many titans nowadays. Makes it a bit easier to navigate the waters and score records/achievements. For example Ray of Light (album) and Frozen were blocked by Titanic Soundtrack (iirc).

Also the way all of you are acting gagged at a major artists re-recording going number 1. As if the greatest hits albums, which are literally re-recordings, of major artists don’t sale like hot cakes all the time. 
Not to mention they don’t have the faux activism and media hype of Taylors release, which paints her as some saint of the industry taking control of her music as if she’s some minor indie artist getting back at the big man.
