B-Luke Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 So ITO has #1 on lock? That's a huge gap between #1 and #2.

brianc33710 Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 It's interesting that Mars is reaching #1 in airplay AFTER having reached its peak. John Legend did this with All Of Me, as Happy started declining more rapidly than AOM. But overall it's still pretty rare.

So chances are that the chart will slow back down as streaming's metric builds up again through 2017.

The album has sold over 800K, spawned a #1 and a #4 (just like Starboy), but it's a flop. Once again, ATRL loses. Well he served longevity, I dont think anyone is calling him a flop now

Yeah when 2016 started I was thinking that it was going to be a year of like 2010 and we'd have 17 or 18 number ones. But then we had the huge songs Work, One Dance, Closer. I think it's fun to have huge hits but at the same time I'd like to see at least a dozen #1 hits a year. I wouldn't have minded Stressed Out, 7 Years, Don't Let Me Down, This Is What You Came For, Heathens, or Cold Water going #1. They we all so close last year and just got blocked at #2 or #3.

Ger Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Seriously, what's going on with the industry? Charts feel so dead to me, the hit music doesn't excite me at all

novembers17th Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Pop music is cyclical. Pure pop -> the doldrums -> the extremes -> repeat. Y'all really need to read The Song Machine by John Seabrook
R!ck Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber, I wonder who's the biggest male artist this decade so far.

People only listening to their genre of choice is now so much easier, than in past cycles. genre radio explosion decades ago, had a similar but more toned down result. it will come around, it always does. But in the meantime, the gp will remain out of touch with the charts, and the time won't be looked good upon in history. I'm in agreement about the bolded statement, and I think that's ok. So this isn't the golden age of music, so what? Being a music fan means putting up with the not-so-good times because you know the good times will come around again. They always do.
Mattyboy Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) It's crazy we only had 11 #1's last year and we'll already be up to 8 by next week.. At this rate we may have up to 15 #1's this year which means the charts are moving faster than ever. 1. Starboy 2. Black Beatles 3. Bad and Boujee 4. Shape of You 5. Humble. 6. That's What I Like 7. I'm the One 8. Despacito The #1's last year: 1. Hello 2. Sorry 3. Love Yourself 4. Pillowtalk 5. Work 6. Panda 7. One Dance 8. Can't Stop the Feeling! 9. Cheap Thrills 10. Closer 11. Black Beatles Plus with Miley & Selena coming we have more #1's coming too. Edited May 7, 2017 by Mattyboy

I am not a genre fanatic, so it's pretty much all the same personally to me. However I do miss having a half dozen or so genre defying superstars around on the charts. Those are the people that foster change. Gotcha. It would be nice to see a genre defying superstar as you said. New artists will come soon enough and we just kinda have to put up with what we have now until then.

Depends on the artist and their pull Justin Bieber, Ed, or Taylor selling a day before would hurt their chances of debuting at #1 or high As I've mentioned before...Heartbreaker by Justin debuted off of only 1 hour of sales (sold 55k) and the split sales prevented the song from going top 10 because he sold 127k after a full week...song peaked at #13

It should only be in 2016 seeing as that's when it first reached #1. So we will be at 7 new #1's this year assuming I'm The One and Despacito go #1 this and next week. I'd totally be here for Miley and Selena snatching the crown as well
