1x Platinum? :deadbanana:

I’m not an expert but I think single sales were completely dead during this time and digital sales hadn’t taken off. For example, Britney’s IAS4U isn’t even certified Gold, Jennifer’s I’m Real never certified, even Destiny’s Child’s Survivor is only 1x platinum, etc.

Well, 1999-2003 singles were basically airplay #1 songs, there were no digital sales and nobody would go to a Record store to buy a single. People were buying albums though. It was a common thing top selling Album doing 400k weekly on a regular week.

Not fully. People just bought albums because it was the only way to get a song. Physical singles in the US at least were dead. This was also at the height of Napster and the birth of iTunes in 2003. So Marmalade was only available via the soundtrack as it was an airplay only single.

What did everyone expect?

:rip:

This is GREAT.

‘Lady Marmalade’ was never officially released for physical consumption (in neither CD, Casette or Vinyl format) and was an Airplay-only single (and was the third Airplay-only song to top the Hot 100 at the time) so this certification is a combination of raw digital sales and streams, primarily the former.

The Hot 100 was completely radio-fuelled between 2001-2004 - with the exception of Charity singles and American Idol winners singles which were the only songs to place at number one/in the top ten of the chart on mostly sales alone.

Also, 2000-2002 was the peak of illegal internet downloading via. Napster and Limewire so whatever “sales” this song made at the time was completely pirated.

Right? And if I’m not mistaken, Lady Marmalade was not available for sale on iTunes in the US for many years especially during the digital era.

The Moulin Rouge soundtrack was listed as Album Only so the only way for people to get the song was to buy the whole album, so the digital sales of that song are relatively low too

For the ones asking, it wasn't available on iTunes as a standalone single up until last year. You could only buy it as a part of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Also:

Did RCA certify it? Maybe they’ll certify some of Britney’s stuff too. :duca:

A platinum certification is pretty good since singles sales were completely dead back then but I thought it would be eligible for more since its streams on Spotify and YouTube are quite strong, maybe they’re more internationally based?

“Lose Yourself” is Eminem’s signature song and has been selling, consistently, digitally, since the late 2000’s. It’s also achieved huge streams through its sheer popularity and notoriety.

Furthermore, he’s a Rapper and has maintained far more commercial success and greater celebrity than any of the ladies on “Marmalade” (with only P!nk coming anywhere close).

Both songs aren’t anywhere close in similarity even if they were released a year or apart.
