@allforyou your estimate is almost the same as the recent press release by Julien's auction

Over 1,000 of Janet Jackson's most spectacular music video, tour and television performance worn costumes and ensembles, red carpet appearance gowns as well as personal items and accessories owned and used by the five-time Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter/producer/dancer/actress/author and one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, who has sold over 192 million records worldwide, headlines this three-day auction extravaganza taking place on Jackson's birthday weekend Friday, May 14th, Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, May 16th, 2021.

I'm glad they put the right numbers :clap3: Also I'm gonna look up the plaques that are on there later today and see if there are any new ones, I think for each album I might add a breakdown of its sales per continents and countries

The odd thing is, their sales for her 3 blockbuster albums are on the low side. 10M, 12M and 14M for control, RN and janet respectively.

She sold over 200 million albums and records worldwide she is a top 10 best selling female artist worldwide a G.O.A.T. with one of the biggest music discographies in history.

Janet Jackson = 600k

Dream Street = 300k

Control = 14 million

Rhythm Nation 1814 = 14 million

janet. = 20 million

Design Of A Decade = 10 million

Pretty on pair with my predictions, I wished Island would update them but I don't think it'll ever happen.

I think it's available globally on Apple Music but not on Spotify, such an odd thing.

Oh yes. Was referring to Spotify.

Some missing certifications for The Velvet Rope you can add @allforyou!

1x Platinum - Philippines (40,000)

1x Gold - South Africa (25,000)

1x Gold - Ireland (7,500)

1x Silver - Thailand (10,000)

As per Billboard in July 1998.

https://books.google.ca/books?id=-AkEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA7-IA1&dq=janet+the+velvet+rope+double+platinum&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiB54OW2YH0AhVQ6p4KHaaxBcUQ6AF6BAgFEAI#v=onepage&q=janet the velvet rope double platinum&f=false

I’ve added these certifications to the album’s Wikipedia page as well as the 2x Platinum certification in Denmark.

Thank you! I'll add them soon. This just further proves how global Janet was during that era despite ATRL saying she's unknown outside of America

Yes, she was huge. I keep trying to unearth more missing stats. So many certifications were/are missing from her wiki pages. A lot of places we just have no idea cause they weren’t reported or lost. Thankfully there’s this nice breakdown for TVR from mid-1998.

TVR had to of reached Platinum status in Taiwan and definitely at least 1x Platinum in South Africa considering Janet’s sold out stadium tour leg later that year!

The Velvet Rope is certified Platinum in 14 countries. If we add those two other countries it should be at least 16 countries. :alexz:

The ad said 6M copies sold so far...and this was as of July 1998. We know that it sold 2M more in the US then 200k more in Japan, and in Canada etc. 10M is definitely not farfetched as some pseudo chart experts claim.

@allforyou

Design of a Decade is Platinum in Switzerland.

It was certified “1x Gold” (25,000) in 1996 and then “1x Gold” (25,000) again in 2000 so it’s actually 1x Platinum (50,000)

http://www.swisscharts.com/search_certifications.asp?search=Janet+jackson

Similarly The Velvet Rope was certified “1x Platinum” in 1998 and then “1x Gold” in 1999 so it’s certified for 75,000 (50,000 + 25,000).

Swiss certifications are weird. :gaynetcat3:

So she has 2 Platinum albums in Switzerland and is eligible for 3 with the janet. album.

The janet. album is so under-certified it’s crazy.

1x Gold Switzerland -> 1x Platinum

1x Gold Germany -> 1x Platinum

1x Gold Netherlands -> 1x Platinum

Missing 325,000 certified units from those 3 countries alone.

Plus it sold +400,000 copies outside Japan in Asia so it has tons of missing certifications in countries like Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore etc.

That's true. This was actually just sales for South East Asia. It doesn't include sales from bigger music markets like Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Of course we also know that is sold upwards 600,000 in Japan (probably also a dated figure). For an R&B act, her Asian sales were very strong.

Well it’s actually for almost all of Asia. Billboard magazine doesn’t care about geography apparently and lumps pretty much every major Asian market as “South East Asia” when discussing Asia outside Japan. :laugh:

So +400,000 by early 1995 in:

Malaysia

Singapore

Taiwan

Hong Kong

Thailand

Indonesia

Philippines

China

They list the countries at the bottom. https://books.google.co.id/books?id=2AsEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA68&dq=janet+over+400,000+sold&hl=zh-CN&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjw5sfS64TkAhUk4XMBHZQgDm0Q6AEIKzAA#v=onepage&q&f=true

However I noticed they don’t list South Korea where we know the album sold at least 50,000 so it’s overall total actually could be a lot higher if it’s not included. Kinda confusing because typically they include SK when reporting Asian figures. :spin:

Plus the album sold a minimum of 30,000 in India.

Japan - est. 700,000

“SEA“ - est. 450,00

South Korea - 50,000 (could be a lot higher or not if it’s already included in the SEA total)

India - 30,000

= 1,230,000 or 1,180,00 if SK is included in the SEA total (conservative estimate)

Big Asian sales any way you slice it. And Design of a Decade was an even bigger seller in Asia! :fish1:

Thank you for clarifying. And yes, with the exception of Japan, DOAD outsold janet. in every Asian market. It was a steady seller.

Wow at getting a gold when she was at her 50s,  Janet was right going the urban route, see what she did with MFN appealing to pop fans and selling only 200K globally....
