This is album is so conflicting to me. Selena got me 5 years ago with Revival and she raised the bar pretty high. Starting with amazing pop record and era (Revival) and launch of standout droplets (we didn't count Taki Taki :fan:). So expectations were high. And while on the best track from the record - title track - she asked question about not being recognized for her rarity, album was basically opposite of this. It feels like catch-up for cute productions and hit material (Ring, seriously?). We got a bit soulless record with many fillers attached to it. And even the worst, she seems absolutely unpassionate about entire project, which lets down it even stronger. Still, as I already admitted she did made some points on here. Highlights are pretty high, but lowpoints on here are too low. highlights: A Sweeter Place, Souvenir, Crowded Room, Fun, Vulnerable 17 Ellie Goulding | Brightest Blue "Remember me in a simple way, not what I did or said" Probably one of the biggest surprises of the year was Ellie releasing one of her best albums. After spending last 5 years of releasing mediocre (mostly) pop songs and trashy collabs, you would never expect her to go alt-pop direction for album. While I liked Delirium, it's Lights and Halcyon that made her as artist. Minimalistic folk-pop sound of Lights and Halcyon dark and loud alternative really make her shine. Brightest Blue sees both of these sounds blending together along with some fresh production, soulful ballads and sends you into deep emotional journey through listening. The rich sounds of biggest tracks like 'How Deep Is Too Deep' follows by piano tearful tracks like 'Flux' or 'Woman', strange interludes interrupts powerful anthems like 'Love I'm Given' - but everything still forms one of her most finished and cohesive records. EG.0 sounds a bit weird after first 13 tracks, but welp, I'm okay with it since it gave us Slow Grenade and Close to Me. highlights: How Deep Is Too Deep, Start, New Heights, Tides, Flux TOP 100 SINGLES 34 Charli XCX | claws "I like everything about you" Fun banger, a bit messy like it's green screen music video, but I have much fun listening it through this summer. 33 The Weeknd | Blinding Lights "I can't sleep until I feel your touch" Even tho this one was my favorite out of two singles he released last year, I never sees this to become one of the biggest singles ever It's a pop perfection with some of the most striking instrumentals he did, kinda reminds me 'Starboy' album sound, but much bigger and drugged a bit.. 32 Chloe x Halle, Swae Lee | Catch Up "Why you trippin' when I give you what you give to me?" I think it was a bit weird way and song to start an era, but welp it was nice appetizer for what's coming. It's groovy and vibey fun bop attached to project. Swae Lee is a bit too much in this, but I think he sounds nice with girls. 31 Tove Lo | I'm Coming "I'm Lucy in the sky, I'm queen of the clouds" I never heard the original before, so listening Tove's version felt like a dream. This is pop at its best. Explosive, dreamy, infectious, sexy anthem! Habits sample sounds like a nice nostalgia vibe. The only thing I kinda hate - its mixing, why the hell it sounds so much quiter than other songs? 30 HAIM | I Know Alone "Nights turn into days that turn to gray" One of their most poppies songs this one captures my attention not only because minimalistic fierce production, but because how lyrics captures the loneliness of quarantine days. It's bittersweet, but kinda make you feel better in the end. Not that that even really means anything skdjsljds. I generally liked Bikini **** more than that anyway, so. Claws, Blinding Lights, and I Know Alone Yeah, similar to People I've Been Sad, I Know Alone became one of those perfect songs that don't actually relate to quarantine but fit the zeitgeist at the time, and even now. One of my favorite songs from that album, and probably one of my favorite HAIM songs ever?
