The way HIFN is Charli’s best album. I was shocked that not only did she manage to top N1A, but she did that in one month?

Taking this post to say thank you so so much to everyone who commented on my Best Of this year! Changing from alphabets to ranked lists was a little nerve-wracking but wound up being a lot of fun. I said I was gonna come back here in 2021 to say which 2020 songs/EPs/albums I missed I would have included on my list but idk there's a lot I still need to go through so I'll doubt it. But so far, YES Magdalena Bay would have been a top EP omg how did I miss this.

Anyway, here's my last round of replying to comments and I'm posting my full ranked album list here too, which I'm 100% sure changes every day.

Again, thank you all so much! Here's to a better 2021 and for a musical year as good or BETTER than 2020 :fish1:

What a surprising winner  :fan:

Anyway the top 4 is literally PERFECT! but you already know

So glad you mentioned that DSN teaser video, it's the moment I knew she is coming to stomp :jonny:

Great picks from all the albums too (apart from overrated Ladees :fan:)

Thank you for doing this, it was super fun and I loved your write ups :heart2:

skskskkssk I KNOW WHO WOULD HAVE EXPECTED WYP TO WIN.

Thanks so much for following along king!

Future Nostalgia :katie2:Dua's career has been very consistent so far, and she really delivered with her album!! I also agree with your top tracks on the album :cm:

She really made me proud with this album after what I thought was a pretty meh debut. A queen!

Now why do you gotta remind me of 7 Years like that :monkey: Click and c2.0 both suck! :fan: how i'm feeling now is good, the midsection isn't the best though (including songs like detonate and enemy.) anthems + visions close things out really nicely. Future Nostalgia was #4 on my list as well, okay twin :sats: Aww at Physical become you & your BF's song instead of the slam of screen doors, cute! Your faves are on point except for Love Again. Peeped songs from Fiona + Róisín's projects before but they weren't for me. Whew at disco taking over this list! Another Jessie #1 in the basket, she dominated Best Of this year :clap3: WYP? is a worthy winner + we have the exact same top 4, pretty sure it's even the same order! :sats:

Chosen Family is overhated! It reminds me of Jessie J's Flashlight (in a good way :fan:)

As long as it sounds good, I will :gaycat2:

Over Yet boring!?! Interesting  Yeah, MF & Roses are my bottom 2 from the album so that's why II is at the bottom for me, but it does give us the best track (WWE) so there's no way I could say it's way behind the others.

sksksk sorry sis I know the song is triggering. FN TWIN YAAAAAS. omg difsdihfdioshdiosh the Physical comment.

Not a Jessie J comparison meant to be a comment........ also nnn me just realizing Why We Ever abbreviates to WWE wrestling.

Thank you very much! I'm happy because my top 5 didn't really change too much throughout the year.

Don’t use Charli and not interested in Roisin, but the other 3 are great!

I agree with your highlights from FTBC the most. I honestly never really liked Pretty Please and DSN is in the middle to lower half of the album for me, Love Again and Levitating are bops though

Whats Your Pleasure (song) and Ooh La La :smitten:

Ooh La La kinda underrated!

sksksksk I HATE YOU jk.

Eh for me I've liked Charli since True Romance so the growth of her career is super cool. New-age gays I guess love the loud new music she makes since Vroom Vroom nnn.

the REACH and mental gymnastics between your hints and the actual album :bibliahh:

anyways, what a wonderful top 5. future nostalgia, nothing more can be said about it, one of the few albums that atrl unequivocally loves

hifn :clap3: your writeups for the albums SNAPPED (sans the unnecessary yeezus comparison :eli: )

what's your pleasure ugh i'm probably one of the few people who actually liked glasshouse but i'm so glad she went back to her dancier roots and improved it

WHAT a run for your lists. perfect chefs kiss

I tried okay lsdjsl;jdlshjdls

I like Glasshouse too! I prefer Devotion and WYP over it but I don't really understand when people prefer Tough Love over Glasshouse, and when push comes to shove I like ALL 4 albums.

Thank you so much! So happy to have you following along.

t

hat top 5 :jonny4: YOU DID IT WITH TASTE!

HFIN getting praise :jonny: It's amazing album that captured one of the most weird periods of our lives, and yeah, Yeezus remains my favorite Kanye album was well :rip:

Lily Allen vibrator being promoted in FN write-up :eli: bitch better return herself with sexy bops next year :eli:

Roisin and Jessie released best disco albums tbh, so I'm so ****ing glad they're slaying here :jonny:

Roisin making her old songs sounds fresh and better than before :jonny:

Jessie ****ing slaying every other pop girl :jonny4:

Idk why I feel like Lily's next album will be really good... it's that David Harbour dick methinks.

YES I think everyone who even dipped their toe into the disco pond this year did a good job with it, but Jessie and Roisin really pulled out all the stops.

YES I 100% recommend it. Even if something like What's Your Pleasure isn't for you (you stan FN so you would love it), then she has 3 other fairly varied album to satisfy you.

THE TALENT... it's much too much for me.

Full Ranked List of 2020 Albums

Ranking Artist Top Song Choice Good Songs Meh Songs Notes
1 Jessie Ware Soul Control What's Your Pleasure, Save a Kiss, Remember Where You Are, Ooh La La   Queen of everything
2 Roisin Murphy Murphy's Law Something More, We Got Together, Jealousy, Shellfish Mademoiselle   I'm still not sure if I like this or Ruby Blue more but **** this is so good
3 Fiona Apple Relay Shameika, Ladies, For Her, I Want You To Love Me   The fact that she keeps getting better with each album OMG
4 Dua Lipa Physical Pretty Please, Levitating, Love Again, Don't Start Now Good in Bed Pop queen. Deserves all the acclaim and success that she's getting
5 Charli XCX Anthems 7 Years, Claws, Visions, C2.0   I think I prefer Pop 2 more than this, but it's her Yeezus basically right? Best "quarantine" creative release
6 Hayley Williams Cinnamon Why We Ever, Pure Love, Sugar on the Rim, Leave It Alone, Dead Horse   I'm pissed people don't like this as much because it's not Dead Horse/Over Yet copy/pasted into 14 other songs
7 Rina Sawayama Paradisin' XS, Who's Gonna Save U Now, Love Me 4 Me, Dynasty Chosen Family, Bad Friend Honestly I think this would do better a bit lower because it's a BIT overrated, but I played it SO much this year it had to go top 10
8 The Weeknd Too Late Save Your Tears, Hardest to Love, Faith, Blinding Lights Heartless His best release, honestly. I'm pissed FOR HIM at the Grammy snubs
9 Spanish Love Songs Generation Loss Optimism (As a Radical Life Choice), Losers 2, Brave Faces Everyone, Routine Pain   I haven't loved a pop punk/emo album like this in a long time, but these songs all ****ing HURT
10 Run The Jewels Walking in the Snow Out of Sight (feat. 2 Chainz), Ju$t (feat. Zack & Pharrell), Yankee and the Brave, A Few Words for the Firing Squad   I've always thought RTJ were pretty good, but with this record I finally was like "oh ****". Possibly because of when it was released
11 Tennis Need Your Love Runner, How to Forgive, Tender as a Tomb, Swimmer   Funny how I used to hate these hoes, but they definitely fit better in this kind of music instead of their older sound
12 Lianne La Havas Bittersweet Green Papaya, Sour Flower, Paper Thin, Read My Mind   She's such a queen and I've decided that yes, I prefer this over Blood
13 Kylie Minogue Dance Floor Darling Celebrate You, Real Groove, Say Something, Where Does the DJ Go? Hey Lonely Can't believe it took me so long to discover Kylie, but I'm glad I did with this album. Fever >>>>>
14 Sam Sparro Marvelous Lover Eye 2 Eye, Pressure, Everything, Love Like That   I'm kinda shook Sam Sparro released such a good FULL album! Also this was kinda the first disco release of the year huh? (not really)
15 Waxahatchee Fire Lilacs, Hell, War, Oxbow   Some of yall will hate me for this pick... but it's just so damn good and hits all the alt country buttons that I adore!
16 Pinegrove Moment No Drugs, The Alarmist, Dotted Line, Hairpin   I have never listened to Pinegrove before, but this was one of the first albums this year that really grabbed me
17 YUKIKA Cherries Jubiles Pit-a-Pet, I Feel Love, Yesterday, Soul Lady   Ewan listening to KPOP whaaaaat?! Though I've always loved city pop even if I like... don't know artists in the genre lol
18 Gupi Faking It Modest, None, False Awakening, Plymouth Simulation   He deserves so much more; this is hyperpop excellence. Love when he told Pewdiepie to **** off too LOL
19 Fleet Foxes A Long Way Past The Past Sunblind, Shore, Thymia, Wading in Waist-High Water   I played this A LOT for autumn, I think my favorite album by them?
20 HAIM Another Try 3AM, I Know Alone, Summer Girl, Leaning on You   I'm honestly finding this HAIM record more and more overrated the more time goes by, but I enjoyed this quite a bit this year so it deserves its top 20 spot
21 Moses Sumney Cut Me Neither/Nor, In Bloom, Virile, Conveyor   The second half of this DRASTICALLY dragged it out of the top 20. I'm convinced it would have been top 10 if it was just the first part
22 Yves Tumor Gospel For A New Century Medicine Burn, Folie Imposee, Kerosene! (feat. Diana Gordon), Super Stars   I think the forum does a little too much on this album just because it's not as experimental as his last record
23 Jessy Lanza Over and Over Like Fire, Alexander, Lick in Heaven, Badly   I was a little surprised this grew on me so fast after I was like "aww it's not as good as the last album :("
24 Sarah Jarosz Little Satchel Empty Square, Pay It No Mind, Johnny, Hometown   The most underrated Americana/country record of the year (GRAMMY-NOMINATED)
25 Lady Gaga Rain On Me (feat. Ariana Grande) Babylon, Replay, Free Woman, Sour Candy (feat. Blackpink) 1000 Doves I know it's easy to **** on Gaga, but I really enjoy how House influenced this album is, and you can pinpoint some specific references
26 Yelle Vue d'en face Karate, Noir, Un Million, J'veux Un Chien   Kinda surprised myself having this album so high after thinking I preferred Completment Fou over this
27 Gabriel Garzon-Montano Someone Aguita, Mira My Look, Tomb, Moonless   His debut is GOAT, but honestly I think this is a great release. Nice mix of genres and clearly lots of thought put into each song
28 Empress Of Love Is A Drug Give Me Another Chance, U Give It Up, Should've, Hold Me Like Water   I was worried my enjoyment of this album was just because it's better than Us, but it continues to stay fresh and fun!
29 La Roux Do You Feel Gullible Fool, 21st Century, Everything I Live For, Otherside   I understand people's dislike, but I loved Trouble in Paradise, so I'll take a second version happily!
30 George Clanton, Nick Hexum Aurora Summer Shouldn'ta Done That, Driving in My Car, Time of Wandering, Out of the Blue   I liked George's album from 2018 but there's something more wistful about this album that draws me in more
31 Declan McKenna Daniel, You're Still a Child Emily, Beautiful Faces, Rapture, The Key to Life on Earth   I'll take this baby David Bowie impersonator! Pansexual legend
32 Tame Impala Is It True One More Year, Lost in Yesterday, Instant Destiny, Tomorrow's Dust   A little underrated, but I may like this so much because it came out earlier in the year & I've missed Kevin lmao
33 Brandy Clark Who Broke Whose Heart Who You Thought I Was, I'll Be the Sad Song, Love is a Fire, Long Walk   GRAMMY-NOMINATED lesbian country queen
34 Omar Apollo Useless Kamikaze, Want U Around (feat. Ruel), Stayback, Bi Fren   Been closely following this lad since early last year and I'm very pleased with his output!
35 Zebra Katz Lick It n Split (feat. Shygirl) In In In, Ish, Zad Drumz, Blush   Chaotic rap king. I wish I'd played this more earlier in the year because it would have def been higher
36 Biffy Clyro The Champ Tiny Indoor Fireworks, North of No South, Instant History, Worst Type of Best Possible   I had to give some Scottish representation to my list. DO NOT listen to their WAP cover LMFAO
37 Kate NV Not Not Not Sayonara, Ca Commence Par, Lu Na, Telefon   A really fun discovery!
38 Sufjan Stevens The Ascension Video Game, Death Star, Tell Me You Love Me, America   People do too much on this. OTT Sufjan > Tumblr Sufjan

40 Arca Rip the Slit KLK (feat. ROSALIA), Watch (feat. Shygirl), Nonbinary, Afterwards (feat. Bjork)   I RIP THE SLIT I RIP THE SLIT I RIP THE SLIT I SLIT I RIP THE SLIT I GIRL I RIP THE SLIT

42 Ethan Gruska Enough for Now (feat. Phoebe Bridgers) On the Outside, Maybe I'll Go Nowhere, Teenage Drug, Dialing Drunk Another Animal Basically, if you like Phoebe Bridgers, listen to this. If you don't like Phoebe Bridgers, don't listen to this

44 Dornik Do You Wanna? (feat. Gavin Turek) Retail Therapy (feat. Barney Artist), Space Jamm, You Got It (feat. Taylor Graves), Temptation (feat. Zelly One)   My R&B king (fun fact he used to be the drummer on Jessie Ware's tour). Not as good as the debut, but still good with lots of fun collabs
45 Laura Marling Alexandra Held Down, Song For Our Daughter, Strange Girl, Hope We Meet Again   This was a great singer/songwriter album! I actually never listened to Laura before this
46 Grimes Delete Forever 4AEM, Violence (feat. i_o), IDORU, You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around Darkseid Honestly, I 100% get and agree with the disappointment after back-to-back slays of Visions and Art Angels, but this is an underrated release!

219 Chelsea Cutler Sad Tonight   Lucky, I Was in Heaven, Are You Listening Sad Tonight is cute... the rest of the album is bad, which is just more sad because she does a lot of production herself apparently?
220 Dagny Somebody Bye Bye Baby Let Me Cry, Paris, It's Only a Heartbreak I mean I guess I understand now why Katy would sample a Dagny song!
221 Ellie Goulding New Heights Start Bleach, Woman, Power The funny thing with this album is Ellie really thinks she's doing something with some epic chorus or whatever but it's just... boring
222 Katy Perry Tucked Never Really Over Daisies, Not the End of the World, Champagne Problems I get that being gauche is Katy's thing but this album was just painful to listen to

229 Lauv Canada (feat. Alessia Cara) Mean It EVERYTHING ELSE Let's just say, the title of his song with Troye is how I feel about almost every song

Noticed we finished around the same time. Respectable #1s as usual. It was a pleasure following this countdown as always and the change of pace was welcomed.

A chart too whew the effort! we love it

And I think i finally got around to listening to Declan and Omar's album. Declan was not my type but i acknowledge the talent. omar's album was a lot more connected to me- "Useless" is by farrr my favorite

sksksksk I HATE YOU jk.

Eh for me I've liked Charli since True Romance so the growth of her career is super cool. New-age gays I guess love the loud new music she makes since Vroom Vroom nnn.

:eli:

i mean i get liking true romance cause it's at least listenable but everything post-sucker...sucks :thing:

Too many hoes and flops to go through but whew, we are SO connected with our fave tracks from albums :jonny5: Kiii Lauv sitting at the bottom, yeah I only care for a few songs from him and it's mainly because of the featured artist(s). The title track really did save that Astrid S album, can't believe she decided to put that out as her D-E-B-U-T. Heard Chelsea Cutler's album earlier in the year after enjoying Sad Tonight and your thoughts mirror mine exactly. I actually think Rare >> Selena's overrated droplets era, sorry! Got into Grouplove in Q1 and their album was sooo disappointing, HTTQ was one of the few highlights yup. Kesha, Sam, Ellie (+ a few others) and ESPECIALLY Allie X being so low :!ohno: At least you still served plenty of taste and this was another great Best Of :foxaylove: Happy new year!

Didn't bother with Glass Animals this year, Your Love was cute though

Grouplove meh, I hadn't remembered Hail to the Queen lol

In My Bones is a bop but yeah I didn't find anything else as good in his album

Agree about Sam and BBC definitely could've done better, that album was a little boring

I haven't listened to Paloma because I'm worried it will be mediocre and seems like I'm right from what I've seen so far...

LEON had some good songs in her album, Who You Lovin is a highlight along with the 2 singles

Nothing But Thieves  I heard a few songs from them this year, but nothing really stood out tbh

Blossoms released this year? :dies: I didn't know

Now that I saw this I really wish Beabadoobee and The Chicks had made top 50, good to see you liked them though

Only listing my real faves cause there's too many things to list  : Hayley, Gaga, Declan, Tame Impala :clap3:

Agree on Everything Everything, it was a step into the right direction,, but for me it was more similar to their Arc sounds.

COIN: they've been choosing the wrong singles.

As for Grimes I agree that it's WAY, WAY behind Art Angels and let's not even talk about Visions, but it has some cute bops.

About the ones you disliked....

Purity Ring, I actually burst in laughter after reading your comment. Stardew is a gem though.

Glass Animals was trashy, that's true. And I feel EXACTLY the same way about Selena. Bad Liar was really good and this new album was kinda mediocre.

And finally, the latest HAIM singles are straight up garbage. I really don't know what the hell they are trying to do.

lol your whole chart feels like it was created JUST to put lauv at the bottom

love it

the top 5 :clap3: so happy for Jessie and Roisin to dominate this year. I've never cared about Jessie outside of Wildest Moments but this album :jonny2: recently saw the WYP vinyl skyrocketing in price so I had to snatch it from a local seller while I could lmao

they say better late than never so here I am, I'll try my best not to write an essay

okay first of all I like the new format even though I was a big fan of you going in alphabetical order

now onto the eps, I agree with your take on Texas Sun, title track was great and I didn't care for the album at all aside from Yon and I which was close to making my song list. I feel like their music works better live, especially in a festival environment but I guess neither of us will get to experience that for a while :fan:

Love the La vita nuova and For You (my epoty) inclusions and I really liked that Troye ep, probably his strongest release yet

Alias was alright I guess, def not bad but disappointing in a way and Slime could have easily been an Iggy Azalea song

summer-walker-soul-train.jpg

come through the No Butterflies, No Nothing stanning :jonny: I'm soooooo ready for her album knowing that she Smerz worked on it

Lifetime, Impact, Both of Us and WAP are all great too

I can see the reasoning behind putting each of these albums in the hall of shame and I love me some good dragging :fan: I got the sense most of them were bleh anyway so I didn't even bother with listening :rip: I think your finger may have slipped when accidentally put W*xa and Ph*ebe on your best albums list though, just putting it out there

TVrCRZr.gif

but moving on, not gonna comment on every entry, but I did love the list! there's a couple of ewanchaos-core albums I'm not familiar with that I might wanna listen (and some that I'll probably skip :fan:)

anyway, good to see Dornik get some love even though I wasn't that crazy about this album, really nice to see Kate NV and Zebra Katz too, about time he released an album

Washed Out WISHES he could make chillwave this good in 2020

the REAL tea is that both albums lowkey sucked :fan: Washed Out at least had some good singles (but I think George is capable of something more on his own and WO is pretty much done at this point lol)

I'm with you re: Trouble in Paradise being better than s/t BUT I don't see any appeal in Supervision, it's just as lifeless as Elly herself based on her recent-ish interviews :rip:

Agüita was alright but I can't get past the messy tracklist order (or some of Mira My Look's lyrics :skull:), I think I already said that in the album thread :rip: but I LOVE the title track

okay I could go off about Moses for hours but lemme not, great album regardless of this mess

I'm still lost with this Pinegrove controversy but I don't see much appeal in indie rock for emo bros in general so idk if I'm losing much (and Cardinal was boring despite what everyone says)

I feel like Lianne's s/t, that Tennis album and RTJ4 (which for now is probably at the bottom of my RTJ album ranking) could appear somewhere on my retrospective list if I give them more time, we shall see

oh and I appreciate the Georgia and Dogleg shoutouts

okay I'm gonna stop right here because I don't have much individual thought on the top 10 which I think is pretty neat (especially that top 5!) but I appreciate you spreading the gospel of Chosen Family being ****! WYP? is def a deserving aoty choice and that Jessie story was a scream :skull:

I could go on and on and there's a lot of stuff I liked I didn't have any specific comments about at the time but you did a good job with the thread

lauv at the very bottom, its where he belongs.

and omg, i agree that shamieka is a good instant #1 pick BUT there are songs that last further beyond it including ladies and replay.

agree so much with jessie, though youre robably a bigger fan ive always been paying attention so this is probably a bigger gag for u. soul control is def the best uptempo BOP from the album (unless you count title tack but thats sort of a slow jam ish song to me).

7 years is REALLY good.  i know people who **** on it but they are so stupid.  its the best of the pure pop/emotional moments on the album.  forever who? party 4 u who?

your hayley picks :jonny:

but youre wrong, part 3 > part 1 > part 2!  surprised to see youre putting rina this high but yes we almost agree on everything abt her as you've said.  i actually do like her a lot and wasn't planning to pan her but i did need to put better albums above her to give them credit!

i will listen to spanish love songs, for you!
