Me in 2015 when me in 2020 time travels and tells myself a cryptic message that I may end up liking Miley Cyrus in the future

I'm CRYING :deadbanana4:

Ariana got some love in here :heart2:

you're so right about Victoria, most of the Jaguar songs deserved album placement, not some EP...

RINA EP was great, but I think I loved her debut better :michael: and stawp with this Bad Friend slander :'(

Okay here we go: the top 10 begins! I know this section dies around this time so lemme get this out there as early as possible and keep commenting on other Best Ofs xo

Run the Jewels: RTJ4 Album Review | Pitchfork

"Just got done walkin' in the snow, goddamn, that mother****er cold..."

10.) Run the Jewels - RTJ4 (Hardcore Hip-Hop/Experimental Hip-Hop)

You know, I'm pretty fussy with rap albums if I'm honest. Even country (alt-country, mind you) albums seem to stick more for me throughout years past. Though this year I was really enjoying artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Freddie Gibbs, Zebra Katz, etc. so I seem to be getting better at it! I have actually enjoyed Run the Jewels since their second record but nothing they released really, truly stayed with me for more than a month or so. Until now. I think part of this is because the album was released at the apex of BLM protests and conversations, but the album stands on its own too.

Walking in the Snow just flies ahead of the other tracks for me personally. I continually associate the chaotic opening with this boss song from a Legend of Zelda song for NO real reason. It touches on a lot of ****ed up social issues with an obvious focus on police brutality. Out of Sight is the "bop" that I like the most here. I've always been... fine? with 2 Chainz and his Jay-Z imitations, but I actually really like what he does on this track. I also wanted to highlight the opener and closer because I play those ones a LOOOOOT, and obviously a strong start and end to your album is really needed. Fantastic album and I'm glad it's continuing to get year end acclaim.

Listen to: Walking in the Snow, Out of Sight (feat. 2 Chainz), Ju$t (feat. Zack & Pharrell), Yankee and the Brave, A Few Words for the Firing Squad

Brave Faces Everyone | Spanish Love Songs

"We throw a pill down our throats, or ourselves into the ocean..."

9.) Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone (Emo/Pop Punk)

Surprise! This was an artist in the HMs section that is actually top 10. For the record, they are called Spanish Love Songs, the album is entirely in English. No clue why they're named that. Anyway, I've always been a bit of a secret slut for emo music. Millennials (at least American ones) will remember all those emo bands popping up around the time of us being in middle/high school. I went back to a few of those albums/songs earlier in the year and... they're really only emo because of the way they sing I think :rip: The lyrics are just a bit whiney or don't say anything.

Enter: Spanish Love Songs. Oh my God, I think the first time I listened to this album I almost cried on every song. They just hurt in the specific ways that do for those of us who struggle with money/the realization I will never own a house, generations before us crushing us under their heel and laughing at us, depressed friends, um yeah. Tearing up a bit ngl. Generation Loss is the TRUE gut-punch as I mentioned earlier. The "don't take me out back and shoot me" refrain of Optimism... ouch. Losers 2 not only continuing my depression "Now if we weren't bailed out every time by our parents, we'd be dead; what's gonna happen when they're dead?" but also shading our AWFUL police system two lines before that. Life ****in sucks sometimes! But we're not alone, and we're all working through it. Brave faces, everyone.

Listen to: Generation Loss, Optimism (As a Radical Life Choice), Losers 2, Brave Faces Everyone, Routine Pain

After Hours (The Weeknd album) - Wikipedia

"It's way too late to save our souls, babe..."

8.) The Weeknd - After Hours (Synthpop/Alternative R&B

I never cared much for The Weeknd in his mixtape days and his first album was the first full slice of The Weeknd I listened to. It sucked. His singles from the next album, Can't Feel My Face especially, slapped but the album was alright. Starboy quickly followed and I'd say had more good songs, but it was like 23 songs long and it could have lost like more than half the songs. 2019 rolls around and Heartless / Blinding Lights are released and I am LIVID that Heartless is the one that hits #1 and I assume that The Weeknd is gonna release an album all in the vein of Heartless. I was incredibly, pleasantly surprised to see Blinding Lights get the last laugh and SMASH in 2020, and then see that the album mostly follows BL's sound.

I'm quite happy to be associating this forever as the first album released during quarantine because it was played a LOT in those March, April, May months. Too Late was always the standout song for me... I don't really know why though. I think it's the garage influence, especially in the chorus. I understand the Save Your Tears - Circles comparison, but I think SYT is much better and I hope it actually becomes a hit next year, since there was never a chance for In Your Eyes to become a hit with BL still SMASHING and the fact that IYE lowkey sounds exactly like BL with a sax solo. The D&B in Hardest to Love SLAPS. The more I listen to the album too the more I'm finding myself in love with new songs - title track is really good, the last song is good, etc. Looks like Abel finally got the swing of a proper album!

Listen to: Too Late, Save Your Tears, Hardest to Love, Faith, Blinding Lights

Sawayama - Wikipedia

"Let me have an unforgettable time of my life..."

7.) Rina Sawayama - Sawayama (Dance-Pop/Pop Rock)

Surprise! Instead of seeing one HM mention, in the top 10 today, you're gonna see (no more than) three. *blows kiss* Love you little Ewansters!

Yeah I had to put a Gaga reference here because Rina is a Liddo. I don't have as much to talk about here since I noted it in the HM section, but yeah while I think Rina is better than Sawayama (weird sentence), her full debut album is really cool in that it goes in so many different places. You got a bit of 90s metal, 90s pop, house, rock, Final Fantasy, you name it! Paradisin' is the obvious highlight no matter what you rats say, but XS follows closely behind. Yeah idk I don't have much else to say about this album that everyone else hasn't already said! I will say I was a little surprised I had it ranked so high since I still trash certain songs on this album, but I enjoyed the album and played it soooo much in the middle of the year, so there's no way I was gonna let Asian excellence miss the top 10.

Listen to: Paradisin', XS, Who's Gonna Save U Now, Love Me 4 Me, Dynasty

Petals for Armor - Wikipedia

"I'm not lonely, baby, I am free..."

6.) Hayley Williams - Petals for Armor (Alt Pop/New Wave)

I'm actually really sad that Hayley is missing out on the top 5 because I love this album so much. Mind you, still being top 10 is quite a feat in a year with fantastic music. I know everyone was wanting After Laughter 2.0 but with Hayley's name (I like AL more than PFA btw), or they were wanting Paramore pop rock with Hayley's name, or they were wanting MPG bops/12 Stay the Nights, but um. I'm sorry, that would have been SO BORING. Paramore have like 6 diverse albums; just go back to those if you wanted any of that! Instead, my queen decided to pull influences from more alternative artists that Hayley herself stans. Artists like Solange, Chairlift (aka Caroline Polachek), and Mr. Twin Sister - the latter being the most clear influence.

My obvious ranking for the "parts" would be Part I > Part III >>>>> Part II. Part I being above III may have to do with the fact that it was all out back in February so I played it erm over and over and over and almost all 5 songs topped my Spotify Wrapped. Cinnamon is my favorite part I song because it's basically like some St. Vincent/Masseduction song but TOTALLY made "Hayley". Leave It Alone closely follows because I'm a sucker for music that make me cry :emofish: Which is the same reason why Why We Ever is ranked so high oh my GOD the change in the long outro. Dead Horse a bop, the yayayayaya bit is AMAZING. Pure Love just BARELY is above Sugar on the Rim because it's one of those songs that Hayley NEEDS and you can really feel her emotion as she sings it. Sugar on the Rim, come on, this was for the GAYS need I say any more? When she gets to the second and third chorus and really BELTS IT oooooooo yeah.

It's not listed below but I also wanna highlight Taken. Lyrically, not my favorite song, but it's the most "LITERAL" Mr. Twin Sister song on here. Like... they could have given it to them and it would have fit so well. Which leads me to my next point, I highkey wish that Hayley had just ended up covering Power of Two and plopping it on the album because it's one of my favorite songs ever and Hayley would sound phenomenal on it omg. Anyway. Petal for Armors haters, REPENT!

Listen to: Cinnamon, Why We Ever, Pure Love, Sugar on the Rim, Leave It Alone, Dead Horse (2 songs from each Part)

omg idhsildhsidhsi this is amazing. It's like every closeted gay hiding from their guardian their gayness in their room as they dance to choreographed music. Weird seeing the good sis without a perm tho. The song is a bit of a bop too... maybe I was ALWAYS wrong about Tennis?!

The way we switched on the "driving so hard I'm gonna piss on myself" songstress!

Vaya was one of my faves on Kali's album as well, stunning song :smitten:

Midnight Sky very cute bop :jamming: Paradisin' second worst on Sawayama, glad Bad Friend is getting all the acclaim :fan:

New Emotion big bop but not my fave on the album  Till I Own It was decent I think, I can't really remember :keir:

Reboot by Wonder Girls and Max & Match by Loona are the highest rated on rym btw

Vaya a masterpiece. Ignoring your Rina thoughts! I'm glad you at least liked New Emotion nnn most people seemed to only care for the singles at least here.

AND NOTED I'll maybe check those hoes out next year. Will I stan Loona?

I hate on Dead Petz all the time but at least it gave us that gem and "who put the dick in a *****?"!

Ugh Victoria, she'll hopefully get it together for whatever her next release is. Debut rollouts are usually messy as hell anyway, so I forgive her

nnnn you sis serving another bunch of TASTE!

After Hours acclaim :clap3: I love how cohesive both album and era were!

Rina :clap3: one of the most diverse albums in my recent memory, especially debut one

nawt Hayley's Part 1 above Part 3, when Sugar was released on 3rd one :biblio:

Georgia & Victoria are cute so far. Ariana is generally great but not really this year :) The Aces, Miley and Rina YUP :worship: "I am TIRED of seeing Bad Friend so high on people's lists and Paradisin' so low on people's lists!" Well both were top 10 on both of my lists so what now :fan: my hair, Paradisin', Midnight Sky are my favorites from those albums :sats: I have The Beths on my list of artists to get into.

#8-6 all in a row oh baby!! :katie2: Ooh your PFA EPs ranking is a spill as well, but Part 2 isn't thaaat far behind. Hardest to Love, Blinding Lights, Paradisin', Dynasty, Cinnamon, Why We Ever, Pure Love, Sugar On the Rim & Dead Horse :smitten:

Ok it's coming along :duca: lol, I was obsessed with that 2 chainz verse for like a week and you just made me remember. I love Abel's mixtapes but After Hours, yep that's definitely his best album. And I wonder what could be #1 :eli:

I'm a bit torn with petals still! I don't think I expected an album like After Laughter and I'm glad she went in this indie rock mixed with dance pop mixed with chamber pop whatever direction, but I think she is still capable of much more and the whole project does feel like a collection of songs, the 3 part split also doesn't really give us anything :michael: But I do like the project for sure!

HMs:

Some appropriate picks! Surprised Rina only made HMs though  Idk if this is controversial but Sawayama>Rina  a few of my other faves (Kali, Thundercat, Victoria) are also HMs but you seemed to enjoy them! I still have that Spanish Love Songs album saved so hopefully I'll get to it.

I didn't know if the Miley praise was justified or not but since you have it at least as an HM, I might give it a shot :matty:

Off topic but I read Jack Garratt as Jack Harlow and was super confused

Albums: I feel I've gotten tired of RTJ lol I think once you've heard one, you've heard them all tbh

Abel and Rina (??) though :clap3: Glad to see them in your top 10

Lowkey confused by the HM thing from before but I'm gonna roll with it :angelo:
