Green Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 Disco has become in one of my favorite Kylie's albums
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 20, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2020 oh wow tennis is up high for you. yeah its an improvement for them, but i didn't listen to it on REPEAT. but yeah thank god they got some rhythm and a pulse in their music. i like every other thing in your list! except the obvious but ill ignore that. and omg, sam sparro's album was very good, only listened once. i liked hte new jack swing songs but also the more freestyle/80s ones too you just got into kylie this year! what are your fave albums?
potent Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 I mean there's plenty of older Kylie stuff that I don't know either, she just has so much to hear but yeah this was a surprisingly great album from her, and great to see the Celebrate You praise, I don't see it being mentioned too much and it's a great track maybe just because people are getting tired of disco songs by the end of the album Don't know the rest unfortunately, but Tennis sounds pretty interesting! HAIM in your previous set So many people were calling it overrated that I almost started thinking it was overrated too, but I re listened just today and it still slays Fleet Foxes getting some appreciation I think I don't remember a lot of those tracks you mentioned tbh, I need to give their album some more listens, but Featherweight, Sunblind, and Can I Believe You are just masterpieces
SLIME Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 I def have to listen to Gupi (and the Food House stuff) based off your recommendation. Tennis is another band that I just haven't listened to. Soul Lady is beautiful and I like a lot of your picks here. Excited for top 10 like I am for the return of Queen Radio
Lazuli Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Quote Ugh yes now that Shore is out and good I can finally say that previous album was a ****ing SLOG. Ignoring the shade though from you! nnnnn i didnt mean that as shade, i just think a robin pecknold collab would result in more of the same from folklore/evermore. she should keep working with justin, or like ag cook to continue where closure left off waxahatchee is a cute girl i remember someone on atrl commenting on one of my previous year's best ofs about being an OWH tho nnn queen kylie yaaaaaaas she can do no wrong
That Bad Eartha Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Yess for Sam!!! I’m surprise you didn’t like his second album more, I revisited lately and forgot how much of a disco serve it was. I didn’t make a best of but I considered doing one just to try to get more people to listen to his project. Eye 2 Eye is one of the best songs of the year. And his remix EPs are truly stunning for the project. Outside the Blue Chordapella, Everything Knights of Zion dub and Percapella, Love Like That 12”, Eye 2 Eye Percapella and Junior Sanchez mix Honestly would love new Jack swing to make a bit of a comeback with the disco revival.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 Well we have finally made it to the top 10! I think to make the final 2 updates more interesting, I've decided to do an "intermission" to highlight 15 honorable mentions for artists, more of an album focus than a single/song focus. HOWEVER to keep this exciting, some artists that I've listed here are actually in the top 10. Now some could be anywhere between 1 and even 6 artists being placed in the top 10. I wanted to use this as an excuse to highlight some folks in the #50 - 110 album range, but without spoiling my top 10 too much. Also, these will be listed in complete random order. Again, some of the artists below will make the top 10 before I see mass panic. Wait until after Wednesday to panic. Alright here we go! Honorable Mention Intermission Dune Rats So I said this was gonna be in a random order but I actually wanted to start with this random artist for a fun fact. Because it's the year of the rat, I tried my best to look up as many rat-named artists who released this year and listened to their albums/EPs (the first EP I listened to this year was a mostly **** EP from "Ratboy" LOL). I think I got through 1 EP and 5 albums, and I wanted to highlight Dune Rats because their punk album was my favorite of them all. Patience especially gives me classic end-of-teenage-movie vibes. Ariana Grande People do WAY too much on this album and I don't understand why? I know there aren't any NTLTC/GAW'd bops on here, or even basic 7 Rings trap bops on here, and it's not like she's selling a sexy R&B album in the vein of a better artist like Erika de Casier, but this is still a really good album! Fun fact: Ariana was the top "A" artist for two years in a row (for the record, I like Sweetener better than Thank U, Next). Will the Santa Tell Me songstress who just got engaged snag a spot in the top 10 this year? Rina Sawayama I am using this post to proclaim that I am TIRED of seeing Bad Friend so high on people's lists and Paradisin' so low on people's lists! I was gonna whine that I think Chosen Family is **** and Who's Gonna Save U Now is amazing too, but I haven't seen CF on anyone's list and WGSUN is on quite a few lists, so, well done for that everyone. Unlike most ATRLers, but like most of the #indieheauxs, I knew of Rina from her first EP/mini album that I thought was AMAZING but got into about a year after its release. I appreciate that she didn't just copy/paste the Rina formula for Sawayama though. Jack Garratt Man this album is WAY better than his debut. I think it's beyond messy that his album is split up the way it is on Spotify instead of how Jack "meant it to be ordered" which is what stops me from going back to listen to the full album a lot, but it really is worth the listen. Return Them to the One I find to be a bit underrated behind Time, but I love the progression in the song and how EPIC it is. Also, that video, DAMN. Georgia This is an underrated release for sure. It's not PERFECT or anything, and About Work the Dancefloor is still the best song on the album (I've listed a different track because that was a 2019 highlight of course), but it was a really enjoyable listen, especially for the beginning of the year which is usually pretty dry. Till I Own It is my favorite non-single because I really love how groovy it is. The Aces I've been happy to see The Aces get some credit this year since I don't recall seeing them on lists 2 years ago, but seeing a lot of props for them this year. I think the album was not quite on the same level as the debut, but is definitely enjoyable. New Emotion is basically a mash-up of my favorite songs from the debut, so of course it was gonna be my favorite here lol. Thundercat Drunk was a FANTASTIC album so it was always gonna be hard to follow up. Louis Cole is my main bitch, so of course the track that not only features him but is literally called "I Love Louis Cole" is gonna be my favorite. Like, me too bitch! Also since I've mentioned them both now... I would LOVE if Ariana worked with Thundercat and Flying Lotus to make a super funky album. It would sound SO good, just listen to Ari's cover of Them Changes holy ****. Victoria Monet I highkey wish homegirl just waited to make this a FULL album or like... took off a few songs and properly made this an EP. This kinda ****ed up my ranking/where to put it LOL but I do have it ranked with the albums, so. Anyway this was incredibly unexpected after the middling collab song with Ariana. And who would have thought Victoria could make Khalid sound good? His next album should all be with Disclosure, SG Lewis, and Victoria. I know that songs like Jaguar, Ass Like That, etc. are all the clear favorites, but I wanted to highlight an underrated song for my pick here because it's SEEEEXXXYYY. Even with the Fortnite reference! Dorian Electra Another "this album wasn't as good as the one before" sorry nnn. This is really good though! My Agenda, Barbie Boy, Edgelord, etc. Can't believe they got the Village People on the song... like not sampled but LEGIT on the song! Crazy. Also... I don't care too much for the song but the thought of someone looking for a Thanksgiving song and accidentally pulling up Give Great Thanks makes me SCREAM. Miley Cyrus Well well well. I wish my 2015 Best Of still existed because I would link you to my multi-paragraph essay about how much I hated Dead Petz. I'd also link you to my massive praise for FourFiveSeconds which is still Rih's best song. Who would have thought in 2020, the year of our lord, I would not only like some Miley songs but I would actually enjoy the album?! I'm being basic and putting Midnight Sky here (I even LIKE her screaming LOVE BYE YOU!!!!!!), but I also wanna highlight Night Crawling with Billy Idol because that is probably one of my favorite choruses of the year. Kali Uchis This one is a bit of a spoiler if you paid attention to a previous entry, but basically this would have definitely ranked higher if it had came out earlier in the year. It still ranks below Isolation for me because I really love that album and I think the varied sounds make it REALLY work, even if this record is more cohesive. Idk what she be saying but yeah this one was my favorite. Dogleg Yes Super Smash Bros Melee stanning, yes me stanning the album. This is a fantastic punk/hardcore album that I listened to LOADS around the middle of the year. I honestly don't have a lot to say about the record but I really think everyone should check it out if that genre is your thing. Blue Hawaii I'm giving this a highlight because I ranked it with the albums because it's listed as a mixtape, but after ranking the EPs I forgot that the mixtape is like 6 songs long LOL so uh I wanted to give it some props here. I think I tie both Not My Boss and Feelin' together as my favorites from this mixtape, but Not My Boss is sassier and a BIT more fun, so lemme select that as my video here. Spanish Love Songs This album is painful. Not like "painful to listen to aka bad" painful, but like... gut-wrenchingly painful. An album for all the depressed millennials for SURE (though I'm sure Gen Zers would like the album too). This was another pre-quarantine album that kinda ended up hitting more once COVID ravaged the land, even if the topics aren't quarantine specific. Generation Loss hits me the most, especially the chorus... Britney_Spears_crying_saying_yeah.gif The Beths Like The Aces, I was really hoping for more with this album because their first album was just SO SO SO good. Now that time has gone by, I think I've been underrated this album for most of the year. The "big bops" on the album are definitely the best even if it's only half bops and half slow songs. The chorus of Mars... is sooooo fun. I love dancing around my apartment to the song and I'm Not Getting Excited.

I'll add some other extra random things but we'll be basically wrapped up on Wednesday. Probably among the strongest pop records of the last years Lianne It's her most acceptable and best album tbh I hate that she stays so underrated Tennis Need Your Love alone OKAY looking at the other comments here I was not the ONLY ONE who took a bajillion years to get into Kylie kfjdkfjdf. Seems like Lianne's getting more praise this year (deservedly) but I wish she had gotten the amount of love that CxH got for example. Glad you liked it! Honestly that's a common opinion for the Tennis album. It took me a few minutes to really appreciate the non-singles, so yeah give it another shot! On 12/18/2020 at 12:19 PM, KasioKas said: Kylie's album was just okay to me.. Not my Best Of still getting dragged like this! Waxahatchee... odd. I should like her album, I seem to be one of the only ones in this section that is into the indie folky whatever albums, yet when I heard it I couldn't get into it at all. Gave it another listen too - i'm wondering if its the vocals. However I don't dislike it either, I will give it another try I think. Oh I think you'll love Lianne! Hmmm I think if you at least like Fire/Lilacs from Waxy then you'll like the whole album since those are clearly the best. If you're like "meh" after re-listening to them then don't bother checking out the full album again nnn On 12/18/2020 at 12:29 PM, Mark Rih said: Omg Sam Can’t believe I was forgetting about him, I used his album a lot during quarantine. 80s perfection. That and Lilacs are GOAT, the rest of her album is really good too but not quite on the level of those two. On 12/18/2020 at 1:19 PM, Blue Rose said: Swimmer is a great album. Lianne La Havas was an album that I heard too late to add it on my lists. It would have probably made it to the Top 100 at least. Shoutout for placing Disco and Swimmer so high. That might be the best work they may have released to date. Cape Dory falls to second place. Only album I haven't heard was Boombox Eternal, but taking into account the genres, I should like it. Let's hear it. Glad you liked Lianne even after getting into it late! Oh you will like Sam's album I think. Yeah maybe give the singles from Waxy a listen and see what you think. YES you'll like Sam's album for SURE.
