ok so this section ends in 2 days and I honestly have no time/energy to finish my quick write-ups, so lemme just post the whole list altogether :clown:

1.       Róisín Murphy - Róisín Machine

Quote

2020 could deservingly be called the year of disco revival, so it only makes sense for a Disco Queen like Róisín Murphy to come back with a new studio album, her first in 4 years.

“Róisín Machine” is written and produced by Murphy herself and her long-time collaborator Richard Barratt (aka Crooked Man aka DJ Parrot) and it serves as a wrap-up of almost a decade of their work together, dating back to 2012 when the opening track “Simulation” was released. However, all the pre-released songs have been altered to some extent and fused together into a continuous mix so the album still feels very fresh.

Murphy has always been working in the realm of leftfield disco and electro-pop and with Barratt they created arguably her most danceable album yet – the tracks are commanding you to dance despite most of them being slow paced - they unfold with vibrant synths, quirky bass or dramatic violins as they progress.

That being said, what makes “Róisín Machine” more enjoyable is that it’s very emotionally intelligent, even psychological. On “Incapable” Róisín questions her very ability to love – it is done a bit campy but still, you rarely come across such a topic in mainstream pop. “Can I actually love someone?” “Why haven’t I ever felt heartbroken?” - Murphy asks questions that may definitely make a listener to self-reflect. “Something More” is a gorgeous disco tune that depicts Murphy being consumed by endless desires but embracing all of them, taking responsibility for her life, her flaws and mistakes – which is a fine moment of self-assurance.

“Murphy’s Law” lies right in the core of the album and it’s probably the quintessential track to the album – it’s even sampled in “Simulation” and “Game Changer”. In the song, Murphy tells a story of two ex-lovers who live in a small town and therefore are forced to stumble across each other every day – a Murphy’s Law in work indeed. However, the opening line of the song – “I feel my story is still untold, but I’ll make my own happy ending” – becomes the main sentiment of the record. Murphy continues to play the game by her own rules, rejecting the mainstream and creating unconventional pop albums that offer not only a good time but also a food for thought. All in all, "Roisin Machine" is an absolute triumph.

The random Miley drag. She just can never win. :noparty:

I used to say that Miley has the worst pop girl discography ever so this album is actually a giant leap for her! It was nice

After Hours is too good for Grammys. Wouldn't really consider it to be bloated either (def not as much as Starboy). There's a case to be made for almost every song.

Honestly, Bieber getting noms makes Grammys completely obsolete :skull: What was the reason for nominating something that is panned across the board.

Anyways, thanks for checking out! my little thread I got too carried away with my studies in December and after the NYE I was just too lazy and uninspired to do the write-ups but after all, here's the full list :skull:

Roisin getting number 1  QUEEN happy to see it tbh with Jessie getting most people's #1 spot (like mine nnn).

A lot of albums I really enjoyed are in your top 20 :clap3: Would have lowkey expected Dua to be a TOUCH higher given the back to back disco slayage of Roisin/Jessie, but maybe the last 2 songs on that album lowered it a bit more.

Was fun following along, good job!

When Roisin dropped Murphy's Law I knew she'd end everyone with her album and.. she did. Jessie's album is an absolute stun though, I think only Adore You and Mirage are a bit weak but they're still fine. They're really toe to toe for me!

Dua's album is very good (and the year generally has been great for music) but yeah, the last 2 songs drag the album down pretty hard.

Ty! I was planning to do some mini essays on each album but alas.. maybe I'll post whatever I manage to write if I feel like it or just incorporate into my AOTY page
