TheWayWeWere Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 I ****ing love Babylon even album version slays! You should be sad that you put that masterpiece in HMs only Sophie Kyoto is flawless I got into Phoebe music only lately, but whew, she did that! Brightest Blue was such an suprisingly great album after all the messiness of the era
Psycho Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 ICSM Tides is a bop, though there are better on the album Sugar On The Rim is one of the best on that album YSBS and Babylon both great and made my list Wannabe and Pporappippam top 20 hits on my K-Pop list

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 7, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 7, 2020 love language is sooo gorgeous. that and bugsnax kinda deserved more. and SUGAR ON THE RIM TOO. it is a masseducation demo, no wonder why its so good.
BlackoutZone Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 Some of these being only in honorable mentions is questionable, but taste either way cause this is a great streak
Tom Vercetti Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Love Language isn't bad for the album it came from. I heard a couple of other st vincent demos from hayley's album and wasn't impressed. Sunmi will never top Noir huh.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 That Joanne gif is making me scream Sugar on the Rim is sooooo good! But I will ignore the Hayley dragging! Babylon, Sophie's cover, and Love Language are all great too.
ikiru Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Bugsnax is a cute song! pporappippam is so good, I completely forgot about that song glad Ice Cream and Wannabe are only honorable mentions
bestfiction Posted December 16, 2020 Author Posted December 16, 2020 TOP 20 ALBUMS OF 2020 It's finally here! I had to take my time due to tight schedule but now that I've got most of the important tasks out of the way, I can get to this. At first, lemme give an another honorable mention: LOONA – [#] & [12:00] No, we're NOT using the ugly [12:00] B version cover in here! Technically those are EPs and I don’t intend to include them but still decided to give my favorite k-pop group a shout-out. Besides, together they kinda make up for a good full-length album. So both of these EPs suffer from the same issues: they are split between more appealing pop perfection tracks that are more in vein of the signature LOONA sound and the contemporary, girl crush-y songs (basically, ITZY rejects). I’d say that [12:00] has a slight edge over [#], mostly thanks to a listenable title track. Let’s hope that LOONA embraces their artistry with the next release. Highlights: Number 1, Oh (Yes I Am), Day&Night from [#]; Why Not?, Voice, Universe from [12:00] Now, onto the first albums from my actual list: __________ 20. Miley Cyrus – Plastic Hearts Congrats to Miley Cyrus for finally releasing a decent album. Ultimately, “Plastic Hearts” feels like a Miley Cyrus album at its core but its sonic landscape finally allows Miley to present herself as authentic and non-contrived, like it was with “Bangerz” and “Younger Now”. Even though Miley is jumping on the 80s trend, her personality and vocal skills allow her to take on the image of a glam rock diva, which is very welcome. Highlights: WTF Do I Know, Angels Like You, Night Crawling, Midnight Sky 19. Red Velvet – The ‘Reve Festival’ Finale A late 2019 release but it hit me only in 2020 so decided to put it here. Red Velvet is notorious for the saccharine quirky bops and the campy festival concept fits them just right. The best songs on the album are the ones that have a very distinct style; in general this is the main strength of k-pop: if the producers know the concept they want to execute, they’ll execute it perfectly, and it really shows here. There’s groovy, city pop inspired “Ladies Night”, “LP” that is literally serving elevator music and “Love Is the Way” that reminds me of the Stock Aitken Waterman era. However, some of the tracks don’t seem to have a distinct aesthetic, and therefore end up to be “just OK” pop songs – mostly songs that come from the ‘Day 1’ EP are guilty of that. Still, I had a lot of fun with this album, let’s hope that the Irene controversy didn’t destroy their career and they’ll serve more bops. Highlights: Eyes Locked Hands Locked, Ladies Night, Love Is the Way, Zimzalabim 18. Carly Rae Jepsen – Dedicated Side B Didn’t like it at first that much but eventually it has grown on me; I’d even say that it’s better than original “Dedicated”. There’s much more variety in this project to me and simply less duds. “Summer Love” is a groovy banger, “Comeback” is your usual Jack Antonoff bop and I like how she created 2 different songs from the same bridge in “Felt This Way” and “Stay Away”. Just fun listen all around. Highlights: This Love Isn’t Crazy, Felt This Way, Stay Away, Summer Love, Comeback, Solo 17. Selena Gomez – Rare Ready for lashings x Tbh, I really enjoyed this! Half of the album feels super faceless and generic but generally Selena keeps on playing to her strengths and delivers lowkey, whispery bops. While “Bad Liar” and “Fetish” set my expectations high and the album doesn’t really come close to it, most of the songs still dabble into left-field pop, and I appreciate that. “Vulnerable” is ASMR pop done right. “Cut You Off” has a very good funky vibe to it. “Fun” is pretty much “Bad Liar” 2.0 and “A Sweeter Place” is an amazing closer, Kid Cudi’s influence definitely helped to create something magical. I liked medical references sprinkled here and there that makes the album more appealing if you care about Selena’s personal life. Also the bonus tracks from the deluxe reissue are all pretty great, the minimalistic bass-driven songs really fit Ms Gomez. So yeah, I liked Rare a lot and I own seven copies of it so x Highlights: Rare, Dance Again, Vulnerable, Fun, Cut You Off, A Sweeter Place, Boyfriend, Souvenir 16. The Weeknd – After Hours A bit bloated but a fine improvement over “Starboy”. I guess this album ties up everything that could be appealing about the Weeknd - atmospheric R&B and pop bangers all together but make up for a quite cohesive project. I generally enjoy more synth-pop infused cuts presented in the second half of the album; big bops as the kids would say. Deserved all the Grammy nods it could get. Highlights: Hardest to Love, Blinding Lights, In Your Eyes, Save Your Tears, After Hours

Blue Rose Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 Some choices were made... After Hours and its unanimous praise. Selena’s ex did that.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 After Hours is too good for Grammys. Wouldn't really consider it to be bloated either (def not as much as Starboy). There's a case to be made for almost every song.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 The Miley dragging on her write-up, it's what she deserves. But yeah, that album is good! But also... it's Miley nnn. Carly and Abel
dweebz Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 The random Miley drag. She just can never win.
