Remmy Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 BEST FILMS || #10-01 Usually this category is one of the big ones but this year it's pretty lackluster Not just because so many movies were delayed, but even my top 10 feels a little *off* compared to previous years... oh well, here it is! I also included an update to last year's as a bonus. [[ Eligibility period: 10/01/2019 - 12/04/2020 ]] 10. Frozen II [B-] Released: 11/22/2019 || RT: 77 / MC: / LB: 3.3 Starring: Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad (voices) Mini review: She's cute. Weaker than the 1st in plenty of ways but good enough. Also I didn't really care about the backstory of their mom & dad, which is a significant part of everything. 09. Spies In Disguise [B-] Released: 12/25/2019 || RT: 76 / MC: 54 / LB: 3.2 Starring: Will Smith, Tom Holland, Ben Mendelsohn (voices) Mini review: Wasn't ever planning on watching this until I saw that the reviews were better than expected, and so was the movie itself. There's some fun moments in this one. 08. Onward [B+] Released: 03/06/2020 || RT: 88% / MC: 61 / LB: 3.6 Starring: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (voices) Mini review: Onward feels a little too familiar considering it's a Pixar original, but Tom & Chris work well together and it's a good time overall. If I did a PIxar ranking then it would maybe appear somewhere in the middle? I feel like Soul will end up being their superior 2020 release. 07. Knives Out [B+] Released: 11/27/2019 || RT: 97% / MC: 82 / LB: 4.0 Starring: Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, many more Mini review: Whodunnit movies aren't necessarily a favorite of mine but "spoiling" a big reveal early on was actually very clever and made things more interesting. There's a lot of information thrown at you in the first half hour, which wasn't super entertaining, but it definitely takes off after that. Also, this is easily one of the best ensemble casts I've ever seen. 06. Palm Springs [B+] Released: 07/10/2020 || RT: 94% / MC: 83 / LB: 3.8 Starring: Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons Mini review: I think this is the first Hulu original I've ever seen and it was solid. It's a time loop movie like Groundhog Day, though it makes some changes that separate it from others in that subgenre. The movie is a brisk 84 minutes as well, so it's easy to watch. Andy and Cristin are a really great pairing, it was nice to watch them together. 05. Dolemite Is My Name [B+] Released: 10/04/2019 || RT: 97% / MC: 76 / LB: 3.7 Starring: Eddie Murphy, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Keegan-Michael Key Mini review: I knew very little going into this (especially about Dolemite/Rudy Ray Moore), so I was pleasantly surprised with the plot as well as the main character we're following. The first 20-ish minutes didn't do much for me, but it moves at a satisfying & consistent pace after that. Eddie Murphy kills it, which is to be expected. 04. Uncut Gems [B+] Released: 12/25/2019 || RT: 92% / MC: 91 / LB: 4.0 Starring: Adam Sandler, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett Mini review: DO NOT WATCH IF YOU'RE EASILY ANXIOUS!!! I saw it twice because I'm cracked. Uncut Gems is loud, chaotic, and rarely gives you a chance to relax. Layers of tension and risk are constantly being piled on with every passing scene, and it's wild to see our main character f*ck up again and again. Also, this movie kinda made me care a little bit about basketball??? But just temporarily. Repeat viewings might not hit as hard as the first time, I originally had this as an A-. 03. Birds of Prey [B+] Released: 02/07/2020 || RT: 78% / MC: 60 / LB: 3.3 Starring: Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead Mini review: Well, it's way better than the awful Suicide Squad (2016)! This is pretty similar to Shazam! (2019) for me: it's a DCEU highlight, very silly and fun, features a solid cast, but there's a liiiiitle something missing. I also wasn't totally in love with all the flashbacks. That being said, I would love a TV series of Harley just f*cking around. 02. Miss Americana [A-] Released: 01/31/2020 || RT: 91% / MC: 65 / LB: 3.7 Starring: Taylor Swift, Andrea Swift, Jack Antonoff Mini review: I actually had this at #1 for most of the year until I realized that maybe it isn't the right choice, and then after recently rewatching my new #1. Miss Americana is a relatively simple documentary but getting to see more of Taylor's life is always appreciated, although it definitely skipped some big career/life moments. I could've easily watched another 86 minutes on top of the 86 we already got. 01. Little Women [A-] Released: 12/25/2019 || RT: 95% / MC: 91 / LB: 4.2 Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet Mini review: I don't care for period pieces so this didn't interest me at first, although I ended up watching it anyway since it was so hyped and loved. I don't remember the last time I've enjoyed a live action PG movie but this was so sweet and wholesome, it kinda feels like a warm hug (for the most part.) It has an excellent cast, especially the 4 main girls. The bond between them is lovely to witness and their personalities are adorable. Never expected this to ever top my list, but here it is! + updates to my 2019 top 10: 1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [A+] (=) 2. Parasite [A] (=) 3. Avengers: Endgame [A] (=) 4. Jojo Rabbit [B+ to A-] (+6) 5. Spider-Man: Far from Home [A-] (-1) 6. Ready or Not [A-] (+3) 7. Widows [A-] (-2) 8. Joker [A-] (-2) 9. Booksmart [A-] (-2) 10. Marriage Story [A-] (-2)

Tom Vercetti Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 Uncut Gems was gr8 with a fitting soundtrack. Save Your Tears and Spotlight stand out the most to me.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Spotlight, Save Your Tears, Don't Wanna, yup yup yup. Not my favorite song from each album but they're great (I think SYT is my favorite single from After Hours though.... I think)
Green Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 148. Ariana Grande "positions" 146. twenty one pilots "Level of Concern" 145. Billie Eilish "my future" 137. JoJo "Man" 133. potent Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Happy and Visitor both cute bops Level of Concern a bop, My Future cute Moral of the Story Too bad Spotlight is low, but I guess you got into it late Don't Wanna Midnight Love Save Your Tears another bop
Mezik Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Quote 148. Ariana Grande "positions" [1 song left] 146. twenty one pilots "Level of Concern" [0 songs left] 145. The Weeknd "Save Your Tears" [2 songs left] While I wasn't initially impressed with 'positions', it is slowly growing on me. I still think this is the weakest body of work Ariana has put out since her debut era, and feel as though this was really rushed just to get her name back out there? Which I don't get why since she's a household name now.. but perhaps I'm over thinking. I forgot about 'Level of Concern' and I had it on repeat for like an entire month.. oops. Same goes for 'Don't Wanna' and 'React'... oopsies. Save Your Tears is great, and I LOVE 'Spotlight'. So glad I discovered her work on this forum.
