Mezik Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) Mezik's 'Best of 2020' - Country Album of the Year *For the best country album released between December 1st, 2019 and December 1st, 2020.* NOMINEES: Cam - 'The Other Side' Chris Stapleton - 'Starting Over' Cassadee Pope - 'Rise & Shine' RUNNER UP: Kelsea Ballerini - 'kelsea' I think that it is unfortunate that Kelsea released her best album during a pandemic, because the country world was unable to see that she is capable of putting together a cohesive body of work that is true to Kelsea's core while still being sonically pleasing. Every track on the album showcases she is a top-tier songwriter and can write an infectious hit, and the subject matter she tackles on this album covers a variety of themes. She is easily up there with Maren, Miranda & Carrie in terms of talent - but I believe her very pop friendly production overshadows the gifts she brings to the table. I truly hope that with the success of 'Hole in the Bottle' she is able to come back from the slump she has faced with her last few singles. WINNER: Tenille Arts - 'Love, Heartbreak, & Everything In Between' My Canadian Country Princess did not come to play with this album, and for being largely unknown to me pre-2020 she has solidified herself as one of my top country artists, and the exciting thing is she is still so young that she can improve even more. The album has parts that satisfy the traditionalist (eh neo-traditionalist) country lover in me, as well hits all my crossover needs at the same time. As well, her songwriting is sharp and smart and captivates the listener. Lastly... this girl CAN SINGGGGGGG. For a tiny girl, you wouldn't imagine it.. but she has a big voice and one that knows how to capture any emotion. This women is the future of country music, and if she cannot succeed in the U.S I hope she at least has a Lindsay Ell like run in Canada because she's too talented to not be successful. Mezik Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 Mezik's 'Best of 2020' - Country Song of the Year *For the best country song released between December 1st, 2019 and December 1st, 2020.* NOMINEES: Cam - 'Till There's Nothing Left' Mickey Guyton - 'What Are You Gonna Tell Her?' Zac Brown Band - 'The Man Who Loves You Most' RUNNER UP: Ingrid Andress - 'The Stranger' This song is just beautiful, and gets me really emotional when I listen to it. I think it's such an interesting concept, because she is tackling the common "sometimes I wish I didn't know you at all" phrase we all have in our life with some person but spins it in a positive way? She has such a commanding voice too, and the production just feels really regal. It's a shame this song didn't have the success 'More Hearts Than Mine' had, because this is a much stronger effort. WINNER: Tenille Arts - 'Everybody Knows Everybody' Miss Arts is 2 for 2 so far tonight. I think this song really hit it with me though due to circumstances, relatability, and catchiness. First and foremost, I discovered this song when I first started binging 'Schitts Creek' and thought that this song was the perfect soundtrack for the series as the town was so small and everybody truly knew everybody. Listening to the lyrics further though I realized that this song is relatable to my upbringing. I grew up in a small town, where if you 'blinked you'd miss it' (well not really, but still small enough to feel like that) with only a handful of bars you could go to. More than that, in my hometown... everybody truly knew everybody. Growing up it got tiring living there... to the point I DESPISED 'Thank God for Hometowns' by Carrie Underwood... but truthfully speaking now, I miss my little small town home where everyone knows everybody. The chorus in this song hits me every time because it's so infectiously catchy but also every line is TRUE. In my hometown, we all felt like big shots despite being in a small town. We did all meet up after 9:00 p.m singing whatever throwback tunes we were feeling that night, and gossiped the **** out. Very rarely do I connect with an upbeat song so strongly, but Miss Arts did it for me.
Mezik Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 Mezik's 'Best of 2020' - Throwback Song of the Year *For a song that is 5+ years old that was played in high frequency during 2020.* NOMINEES: Alicia Keys - 'Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)' Sade - 'Soldier of Love' Stacie Orrico - '(There's Gotta Be) More to Life' RUNNER UP: Kylie Minogue - 'On a Night Like This' This bop was one of the last beacons of serotonin that was able to keep me afloat for 2020. Whenever I was just miserable, this song somehow managed to life up my life? Honestly I didn't even pay attention to the lyrical content of this song, I just listened to it for the high energy production that amped up my mood no matter how upset or dark I was feeling. Thank you Ms. Minogue for helping this gay boy survive 2020! WINNER: Carrie Underwood - 'Two Black Cadillacs' I know, who would've saw Carrie winning throwback single of the year at my year-end countdown? Jokes aside, when people try to down play Carrie's writing abilities, I think this song showcases that Carrie absolutely has what it takes to write top quality song. One thing that was frequent in Carrie's first five albums, and especially present on 'Blown Away', was she wrote songs as tales more so than from real life. While some people criticized her go this, I think it was fine because the tales she wrote were perfect for the genre she belonged too. The concept of this song, scorned lover gone mad, may not be a new thing or revolutionary... but this song brings a new twist in it that it allows the listener to imagine what happens. The truth is, we just know that these women knew their lover was cheating them both and that they had never met till the funeral... and there's something so eerie about that. Production wise, it feels dark and twisted and vocally Carrie delivers. Fun fact - this song was suppose to be a short T.V series, and FOX has even picked up the rights to draft a script based off of this song. Who knows if it'll see the light of day though since it's been years since that news... but I mean Carrie released a Christmas album and is now releasing a Gospel album so crazier things can happen...?

Mezik Posted December 27, 2020 Author Posted December 27, 2020 Mezik's 'Best of 2020' - Music Video of the Year *For the best music video released between Dec. 1st 2019 and Dec. 1sr 2020.* NOMINEES: Cam - 'Till There's Nothing Left' Taylor Swift - 'cardigan' The Weeknd - 'Blinding Lights' RUNNER UP: Megan thee Stallion (Feat. YoungThug) - 'Don't Stop' The music video is colourful and fun, and show's Megan is the raunchiest women in the industry. She is next level compared to Cardi and Nicki, and probably the only hip-hop women in the game right now who is consistent with music video delivery. She is probably the most exciting thing to come out of hip hop for me, and I'm always anticipating what she will come out with next. WINNER: Dua Lipa - 'Physical' Just an all around stunning video. It reminds me of the videos Madonna, Janet, early Britney and Christina would release where they truly care about the art form of the music video. She went from "oh go girl give us nothing" too releasing the best music videos any pop artist has released in YEARS. It's exciting to see an artist care so much about this form of music, because I feel so many artists just dismiss the music video concept nowadays and pretend it doesn't make an impact.
Mezik Posted December 27, 2020 Author Posted December 27, 2020 Mezik's 'Best of 2020' - Collaboration of the Year *For the best collaboration between two unique artists that was released between December 1st, 2019 and December 1st, 2020.* NOMINEES: Doja Cat (feat. Gucci Mane) - 'Like That' Megan thee Stallion (feat. Beyoncé) - 'Savage' Taylor Swift & Bon Iver - 'exile' RUNNER UP: Carrie Underwood & John Legend - 'Hallalejuah' When the album came out, this was the track that caught my ears right away. These two former Best New Artist Grammy winners show the world why they won the accolade on this beautiful song that honestly feels like listening to the sound of angels at peace. They harmonize so beautifully together, and I think this song is one of Carrie's best vocal performances ever with how crisp and in control she is on the track. John's piano playing adds to the ethereal feeling of it all, and just compliments the track so well. WINNER: Cardi B & Megan thee Stallion - 'WAP' Truthfully, how can we have a category recognizing the best collaborations of the year without making note of what was probably the biggest collaboration of the year? These two took the world by storm with the release of this sex anthem, and for good reason. These two woman know they're hot, they know they're pu$$y is fire, and they're proud of it. They deserve to be proud too, all too often in Hip-Hop it's males referring to women as their sexual property and its night to see the woman reverse the roles and show that they are just as much in power as their counterparts.
Remmy Posted December 27, 2020 Posted December 27, 2020 My favorite video of the year winning Best Music Video As it should!!! Now for the other winner... I can't stand C***i. Congrats to Megan I guess!
potent Posted December 27, 2020 Posted December 27, 2020 Fair enough for WAP, it's not my thing though Physical well deserved I wish BL got at least runner up though Great top 2 for throwbacks, TBC is a great Carrie song, but honestly I liked all of the other choices too Maybe it's finally time for me to give Tenille a listen
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 28, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 yes at physical savage deserved the collab
D/X Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I absolutely agree that Dua delivered the best music videos from a pop girl in years. Physical is great.
