potent Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 Biting My Tongue is a BOP Hmm MGK and Camila Well Tones is a one hit wonder and Lewis isn't so who really won No shade though I honestly like both of them.
MusicLoverDude Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 MLD's Best of 2020 20 - 11 20. Blackbear - Hot Girl Bummer Ok so, I got into this song a bit late, but when I did, the song honestly is a banger. While I think Blackbear is a complete one trick pony, this song is essentially what can be done you find a catchy hook and a flow that works. Otherwise, I don't see him seeing more success outside of this year unless that Monster collab blows up next year or if my ex's best friend gets a second wind. 19. Delta Goodrem - Keep Climbing Been awhile since an Australian act was this high on my year-end...well besides The Veronicas earlier. But for Delta in particular, she hasn't made a year-end list this high in years. I gave this song a listen and I ended up REALLY liking it. It's your typical self-empowerment anthem, but with a beautiful piano and good vocals from Delta, it turned out great. Definitely worth a listen if you need your spirits lifted. 18. Nova Miller - Mi Amor Nova isn't a stranger to landing this high on my year-end. Turn Up the Fire placed in my year-end Top 20 for 2018. Nova finally released a new EP this year and this was the lead single for it. If you're an ATRLer that likes pure pop magic, this song is for you. The song samples Disturbia on the chorus and the song is an awesome kiss off to an ex. It's very catchy and it held my attention for a good portion of the year as a result. Also as an added bonus, I was able to get Spectrum Pulse into this song as well after I requested it to be covered on his Instagram. So the fact that I was able to get a music critic into this song as well was awesome. 17. Aly & AJ - Attack of Panic And here we have Aly & AJ one more time with Attack of Panic. The song is just very mesmerizing production wise and vocally it's very mysterious. I'd say that's why it had longetivity on my zero charts, debuting in February but going recurrent in August. It's a song that works well at midnight/night time and that's why it lasted so well with me. So yes, check it out. 16. Selena Gomez - Feel Me This deserved a proper single boost besides being released on Youtube. I mean it LITERALLY debuted on the Hot 100 at #98 just based on that alone and I'm sure it would have done better with a radio push and a music video. Feel Me is better than most of Rare and I enjoyed this song a lot over the year. So yes, Selena, you failed us here. 15. Maddie & Tae - Die From A Broken Heart One of the biggest country crossover hits this year comes from these ladies. I never expected to care for a Maddie & Tae song but it happened. The song is actually really nice and Maddie brings a lot of nice emotion to the song and the lyrics are honestly pretty sweet - reaching out to your parents after a break-up. It's natural, it happens. Country gets a lot of crap on this site unless it's Carrie or Kacey, but I'd recommend listening to this. And then listen to their 2014 single "Girl In a Country Song" because that song kicks ass and shows they have multiple awesome sides to them. 14. Dua Lipa - Physical This is Dua's final entry on the list. Simply put, I never fully liked Don't Start Now. The song has a good chorus but very bland verses. So heading into Physical I was a bit worried I'd get the same issue. I was so glad to be wrong. This song is meant to have intense sexuality associated with it so I'm glad the production was ampted up. It really works well with Dua's voice, even if I wish parts of the chorus didn't sound monotone. Still, the song is a banger and I'm glad we got it. 13. Machine Gun Kelly f. Blackbear - my ex's best friend MGK is back with his second of three entries on the list. This song is pretty much when I knew the album was gonna be good. It's pop punk goodness that I haven't really heard in years along with Bloody Valentine. And Blackbear didn't sound too bad on here either. Not much else to say other than I really enjoyed this. 12. Gabby Barrett - I Hope One of the biggest country crossovers as well comes in at #12. Who would have thought that the biggest American Idol alumni hit (not from Kelly or Carrie) since Home by Phillip Phillips EIGHT YEARS AGO would come from someone that came off of the ABC reboot? Definitely not me. But you know what, I see why. The song has a very unforgettable chorus you can sing along with . The lyrics are pretty much very venomous which I love and the production is hard to forget too. Simply put, the song is a pretty good breakup anthem. 11. Hayley Williams - Simmer Idk why people thought that some other track would be the higher Hayley track when Simmer has been around all year. This song also served longetivity with me. It's very simple production worked well with Hayley's voice and it also worked well in winter, night time listening and basically was calming to listen to. Hayley really did well here and she knocked it out of the park with this song.
Mr. Loco Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 DSN took a long time for me to get into it, but Physical was an instant bop!
JGibson Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Simmer + I Hope + Attack Of Panic + my ex's best friend + Die From A Broken Heart As a fellow country music fan, it's sad to see to see country music that isn't from Carrie, Kacey, pre-1989 Taylor Swift, Maren, or Kelsea getting dumped on by the ATRL crowd.
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 21, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2020 physical and simmer yas
dreamofyou Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 feel me is cute, physical the ultimate bop
Into The Void Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 feel me, physical, i hope, attack of panic
Reverse Warholian Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 (edited) Loving most of these. MGK, Halsey, Hayley Williams, Aly & AJ Edited December 22, 2020 by ReverseWarholian
TheWayWeWere Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 I don't really care for Keep Climbing, but Paralyzed >>>>>>>>>> Attack of Panic Feel Me is great, but kinda belongs to Revival for me Physical
Sunderland 4ever Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Physical, Attack of Panic and Simmer
potent Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Physical Simmer almost making the top 10 Die of a Broken Heart is cute! Definitely one of the better country songs I heard this year I think I heard Keep Climbing a few times and it was cute, but can't really remember
MusicLoverDude Posted December 24, 2020 Author Posted December 24, 2020 MLD's Best of 2020 10 - 6 10. Twenty One Pilots - Level of Concern If you were to tell me in 2016 that Twenty One Pilots would make my year-end Top 10 in the future, I would have probably ripped your head off. I couldn't stand their mainstream breakout era at the time and it took me years to get even get into their songs after that star faded. So yeah, with that annoying spotlight out of the way, I was able to listen to this song with an open mind. And I genuinely really enjoyed this song. If there was ANY song about this year that actually delivered while still being a quality song that doesn't sound dated, it's this. The retro groove surprisingly works well with Tyler's vocals and I found myself really enjoying this in 2020. It's a shame the US decided not to make this a proper hit. It deserved it. I see myself using this recurrently over the next several years. 9. Little Mix - Break Up Song It feels awkward writing about this now given the news about Jesy. But I'll save my thoughts on that for the appropriate threads. Little Mix is a band that IMO have VERY talented singers, a genuine bond, a genuine interest in the music and empowering others, and always want to give their best. And their lead single off Confetti really brought that in. This song is pure fire and an amazingly memorable break up song that literally never gets boring. Every single member on the song carried it from start to finish and by far, this is one of their best singles in their entire discography, if not their best. I wish Jesy and the remaining members all the best heading into the next several years. They truly deserve all the best things. 8. Camila Cabello - First Man Alright so, I'm still not 100% convinced that Shawmila isn't just an act put on by both Shawn and Camila so that Shawn doesn't have to come out and that Camila can have some type of success. While I liked Romance, not a lot of the songs are still usable a year later aside from a few. And with Shawn, his entire era has been boring and crap. This leads me to believe that neither of them have genuine inspiration to inspire love songs like they sing about on both of their albums. Which leads me into why First Man made it SO high on my list, and why when I first heard it, I instantly new it would be my favorite off the album. Camila's GENUINE love for her father is shown here and when you combine the fact that Billie Eilish's ****ing brother produced this (aka a competent producer who KNOWS how to work with people that have limited vocal ranges), you're in for a genuinely great moment. The performance at the Grammys and the music video were also beautiful and further secured my thoughts on the song. Overall, this is Camila's best ballad and her best song. Glad we got this. 7. Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky So, as a stan of Miley, I still have to say that constantly bashing your previous eras is a major slap in the face to those that stuck by her side despite everyone criticizing her all around them. The last few years I haven't been into Miley as much as I was back in the late 2000s and early 2010s as a result. But I really liked her output last year and I'm always going to give her a shot. I fell in love with Midnight Sky immediately. It's just a great power pop song inspired by the 80s (which is ironic since I hate the majority of music from it) that works well with Miley's vocals and talent. The US can screw itself for not supporting it enough for a year-end list spot but at least Canada, UK and Australia know a good song when they see it. I enjoyed Plastic Hearts and I hope Miley holds her head up high with this era and not diss it later on. 6. Machine Gun Kelly f. Halsey - forget me too MGK's final entry on the list has been saved for here, and for VERY good reason. Bloody Valentine was the warm-up, my ex's best friend was the rise in intensity. Forget Me Too brought it all together and MGK knocked it out of the park here. And even better, Halsey brought her own A game to the track and their chemistry is INSANELY great together. Despite being less than 3 minutes, the song continues to elevate in excitement and intensity until you get to that final chorus with MGK and Halsey singing together plus Halsey's adlibs. This song worked SO well and if it doesn't become a hit in 2021, the Universe has screwed up royally. =========================================================================== Only 5 songs left. Make your predictions.
