MLD's Best of 2020

60 - 51

60. Maren Morris - The Bones

Last year this song was on my bubbling under. This to me was the definition of a sleeper hit that grew on you. And if you listen to the song, it's pretty obvious as to why. The song is very laid back, and it makes you feel good. It's not going to annoy you in the morning when trying to wake up or at night when you are at the computer just zoning. And it works with any season. Just a really nice song overall and major congrats to Maren for having such a big hit with it.

59. Kesha - Cannibal

Tik Tok was the breakthrough hit for her in 2010, and 10 years later, it technically revived her for a brief moment. If only Billboard hadn't changed their rules on UGC prior to this going viral because it could have broken the Top 100 or Top 50 at least like it did in Canada. Anyways, this song is from 2010 so any pop stan on here has probably already heard it, but I mean, 10 years later this song still goes off and I'm glad that TikTok gave it some love this year.

58. MacKenzie Porter - These Days

Another slice of pop country, but this time from Canada. I discovered this song just from watching Youtube videos recapping the Canadian Hot 100. I ended up really getting intrigued by this song and I listened to it and got hooked pretty much instantly. Yeah, it's pop country, MacKenzie has a very pleasant voice that sounds great on the chorus especially and it just gives you nostalgic vibes. Overall, check it out if you're curious.

57. Foxes - Love Not Loving You

Been awhile since we heard from Foxes right? Well, I gave this song a chance and I'm glad I did. The song is pretty catchy but also is a nice message that you can be happier single if the relationship you were in previously was a toxic waste dump. I mean, that's basically it lol. I enjoyed the song, it got its time to shine on my Zero Charts, it departed and it reminded me that we still had Foxes. Hope we get an album from her in 2021.

56. Demi Lovato - I Love Me

Demi's time has come and she bows out with closest she had to any sort of hit this year with I Love Me. So...yeah...here comes the venom. Demi...you had the Grammys with an emotional perfomance, AND you had the Super Bowl national anthem. You clearly could have shoot your shot and had better success this year...and you release this Anne-Marie knock-off that really in all honesty only sounds good on the emo remix. (if only Demi waited in that case because of that trend right now). But I mean, she sounds good here and the chorus had potential if it didn't awkwardly start and stop...like bitch...you're not getting yourself off...you don't need to use the start and stop method here. But anyways, let's hope 2021 is better for her.

55. Taylor Swift - betty

As I said earlier, Taylor thankfully made up for the mess of releasing The Man by giving us folklore (and well...as I'm writing this, evermore). And this song getting the single treatment was perfectly fine. The song is really nice. Her storytelling is very interesting and it keeps you captivated. She's able to sell James's emotions well and how stupid of a teenage boy he is when it comes to love (cuz again, he's a teenage boy). But at the same time, him having some type of maturity to understand that taking that risk to apologize to her will either end with reconciling OR with rejection and heartbreak. And that little bit of songwriting added character depth. Honestly, the lyrics here really make the song what it is and Taylor sells it well. A song worth checking out if you haven't already.

54. Why Don't We - Chills

These boys have a cult fanbase at the moment, and they seem like nice guys, so it's a shame that most of the time their music lacks personality or any slice of life in it. Ultimately, this is one of their better songs and I'd say that this was kind of a step in the right direction because the production was moody (which fit for winter when this came out) and the verses and chorus are more memorable this time. Still, a bit anticlimactic but better than most of their previous output.

53. Jack Gilinsky f. Don Toliver - My Love

Sorry Madison, but your ex had one song that basically was better than everything you made this year, and without really trying tbh. I mean, this is basically a Jack & Jack song with Don Toliver replacing the rapper Jack's part for this song. But hey, Jack serves hotness in the video and the song is like break up with your girlfriend, production wise but better and Jack has some swagger on here. So yeah, I enjoyed this a lot better than I thought it would and it had a solid run on my countdown.

52. Hayley Williams - Dead Horse

Did anyone think Hayley was ever going to release a solo album? I didn't. But hey, it's 2020 and stranger things have happened. Anyways, two songs of hers made my year-end list so here is the first one. Dead Horse is probably one of the more radio friendly tracks on the album, but it's catchy and the song is relatable in that I think a lot of us deal with toxic relationships. So it's catchy, but it also didn't have as much longetivity with me as the other entry she has on my list, and we will get to that later.

51. Lady Gaga - Stupid Love

This was the hardest cut for the Top 50 I had to make. This song was a #1 hit on my Zero Charts, and it charted for 20 weeks before going recurrent on my chart. But to me, it is one of those cases where the lead single is worse than most of the album. Like, I use Rain On Me, Alice, Free Woman, Sine From Above, 911 and Plastic Doll for example a lot more than this now. This song is catchy but I can see why the US got tired of it quickly. Frankly, I'm fine with the rare revisits now. It had its run, it's a fine song, but Gaga has a lot in her discography I can go back to instead.

==========================================================================

Now that we've gotten to the Top 50, I'll be revealing parts of the other lists I have planned to go with the updates on this. Thanks to everyone for the support so far.

I like all the ones I know this set (well, except Stupid Love lol)

MLD's Best of 2020

70 - 61

70. Madison Beer - Baby

Madison makes her final appearance on my year-end with her song Baby. A lot of people said she was giving Ariana vibes with her music video. Which, true, the music video does feel like something Ariana would do (but a lot more low-key). However, the production of this song and the feel of it is more pop Jhene Aiko in my opinion. Regardless, the song is fine, I wish the chorus wasn't so anti-climactic but at least the song is hard to forget. It's gonna lack replay value once this song falls off my countdown though or once we hit 2021.

69. Demi Lovato - Anyone

So we're nearing Demi's exit on this year-end and here is her second to last entry. Of Demi's serious songs, this was the best one she released this year. And her Grammy Performance was very emotional. But I mean, I also don't know how often I'll revisit this. Demi has a LOT of good ballads in her discography and Sober is a song I seem to revisit more which is similar in topic to Anyone. But still, this is worth a listen.

68. Dua Lipa - Levitating

This will be the first of 4 entries from Dua on this year-end. With this being the most recent single it makes sense that this was the first one to go. It's a nice song but I'm still having it grow on me this is as high as I can place it. This song has a good vibe and is pretty catchy, so we'll see how well it does for the remainder of its run with my countdowns.

63. Doja Cat - Boss Bitch

Ugh...I genuinely try to give everyone a chance and if I don't like the songs, I don't like the songs. Doja Cat is definitely a good example of that. Let's just say if I can compile my Worst of list for 2020 within the next week, she'll likely have one or two songs on it. At the moment, Boss Bitch is actually the only song from her that I actually like. Mainly because the production actually really complements the intensity of her rapping and the chorus goes off really hard. I guess the power of the Birds of Prey soundtrack worked in her favor. BUT...it's not the best song from that soundtrack. And we will be getting to that song MUCH later ;)

61. Dua Lipa - Hallucinate

Two Dua songs out in one update, yep. Hallucinate had a full 20 weeks or more to grow on me and the song is decent. BUT it does feel a bit too slow for the type of uptempo it is so at times it felt like it dragged on between choruses and verses. But that being said, still a good song, still a good choice from Future Nostalgia, and still worth the listens.

What an odd comment re:baby comparing it to a pop Jhene.. but.. I kinda see it?

Others above are great

I just ranked this as well, my fave from the album. The bridge is great

Never got into I Love Me  Kiii at Cannibal making it, yup it's still great to this day. Love Not Loving You, betty, Dead Horse & Stupid Love are all great gems :clap3::clap3::clap3: Foxes should definitely have an album coming out next year since she's already released 4 songs that I assume are all from it... plus she is just incredibly overdue anyway.

Such an underrated song.

I'm sure Foxes will finally release the album next year, but she'll probably drop 4 more singles first :deadbanana: Love Not Loving You is flawless. Agree that the song has a good message and its writing is really underrated because the chorus is both super cute and clever.

Betty & Stupid Love are good picks from those albums.

Dead Horse is so good. I fell a little bit out of love with it towards the end of the year, but the YA YA YA YA bit is still so good, as is "I sang along to your ****ty little song". Probably my... second favorite song on Pt. II of that album.

MLD's Best of 2020

50 - 41

50. Why Don't We - Fallin'

I mentioned before with Chills that these guys lack an ample discography full of songs with life to them. So this was a nice surprise from them. Apparently it rips off Black Skinhead, but since I hate Kanye...I'm fine them ripping him off...no toxic idiot to listen to that way. Anyways, this song is pretty much their best single since 8 Letters. We'll see how that January album is.

49. The Vamps - Better

Another boy band single, this time from across the pond, and yes it's better (pun intended). Personally, I did not expect Better to be this high on my list, or even make it at all, but this song, despite it's short length, just goes off very quickly and has a very infectious groove in the chorus. Need to listen to their album but yeah, probably their best single to me.

48. Little Mix - Holiday

It sucks to write this today considering the news we got, but well, I'll save that for the other song we have from them on my list. This song is a good summer vibe, not as good as Break Up Song (which we WILL be getting to later) but the song is still a bop.

47. BLACKPINK - Lovesick Girls

Never thought I'd put BLACKPINK this high on my list. But yeah, this song is really good. It reminds me of We Got the World by Icona Pop, which is also great. It's cheesy, but it's pop candy that deserves the attention and it's a great way for BP to get western attention. Wish this got the same amount of attention as Dynamite. But oh well. Still is great.

46. Avril Lavigne - Warrior

Ok so, yeah, Avril released this as a charity single and reworked it be more self-empowering, but I mean, the original is still better and since the charity single was basically only changed lyrically and vocally, the original still works. This song is pretty underrated on ATRL and as I feel like people love It Was In Me more, which yeah, that's a better song. But I mean, this song is still empowering to me and if this had been a single last year, would have been higher. But anyways, I'm glad it got some type of attention this year.

45. Megan Thee Stallion f. Beyonce - Savage

Megan's a pretty ferociously fierce woman to deal with, and Beyonce is equally as fierce. So her getting on the remix, elevating it, and giving the song new life was awesome. I wish I liked the production more since I feel like it dragged a bit, but hey, I like the song, glad it was a success.

44. Ava Max - Naked

A lot of people on this forum seem to consider this the favorite off the album. I'd say I agree as well. But...for some reason I feel like the magic of this song fades pretty quickly. I loved this song when it came out...it actually debuted at #1 on my Zero Charts and also had a day or two at #1 on my daily chart. But I lost a bit of interest in the song pretty much just as quickly. So while I still like it, I don't know how much I will use it after it goes recurrent on my countdowns.

43. Alesso f. Liam Payne - Midnight

Liam releasing an Alesso collab was probably the best thing he did all year. There was actually life to his voice here. Although this song gives me Wake Me Up vibes which is ultimately a better song. But hey, still a great song worth the listen.

42. 24kGoldn & Iann Dior - Mood

*inb4 the ATRLers that only want women to rule the charts get mad that a rap rock collab is here* - cuz you know that's gonna happen. I mean, look, I love my pop girls and I support women every chance I get, but a good song is a good song. And while NEITHER of these guys have anything good solo (Iann has some collabs in similar territory that are fine) this song somehow struck gold. It's very catchy, the guitar riff works SO well for these guys and it somehow allows both of them to get one good moment each. And again, NEITHER of these guys are special artistically or vocally. But they created a surprisingly good song together and that deserves the year-end slot placement and success.

41. beabadoobee - Care

Just shy of the Top 40 is beabadoobee's sole entry on my list. This song is pretty much Hilary Duff's Metamorphosis sound in 2020. But you know what, I love that. I haven't finished listening to her album but this and Charlie Brown, and Worth It were all nice, this obviously being the best song. So I'm glad it is here.
