Pink Matter Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 HM: With RTJ I feel once you hear one album, you've heard em all (don't know how controversial an opinion that is) Wish Victoria and GGM made your main but glad to see them listed! Disclosure, Kali, and serpentwithfeet Songs: I Want You To Love Me and west side I kinda avoided Lady Gaga like the plague after hearing Stupid Love so I've never heard Sour Candy. Maybe I should give it a shot ?

It deserved the full single treatment with a special guest appearance by miss Tinashe. Sour Candy is a cute bop. It's gonna age horribly tho. While OOPS! & Hide & Seek do sound like ITZY rejects they were still done right and total bangers indeed, with Star/Voice also being a good opportunity for them to branch out in different genres as i think this would fit their sound alot. With Universe & Fall Again being perfect songs to drive at the highway at the starry nights. IDLE's I Trust does get corny from time to time but i think that's a thing i like about the mini, it's different from their different minis "I am" & "I made" with this being a more darker style, with Oh my god a good title for it, and Seulrene well let's just say this would have more opportunities for SM to give Red Velvet more units (Manifesting Joy & Yeri unit), this totally fits their sound and even if some songs did get disappointing it still worked well for them as i couldn't imagine Red Velvet as a whole singing the songs, especially Monster. we NEED more RV subunits 17 hours ago, SKESTU said: spilled on everglow... lindas yup 17 hours ago, Remmy said: Die 4 Ur Love A good EP, the title track does some kinda heavy lifting though. Sour Candy is nice la linda just wasn't what i was expecting based on the singles i guess. maybe i should revisit it. she already removed the great song "red light" from the album, if you didn't listen to it i recommend 17 hours ago, hjelp said: positions might be her best album, you did it wrong absolutely nawt 17 hours ago, TheWayWeWere said: Bron was nice one-off single, but I get tired of it very quickly, I hope she serves another INL with new record Sour Candy issa grower it already looks better than SSSS. this reminded me of INL honestly 16 hours ago, Ava Max said: LOONA & Everglow queenszs 16 hours ago, Hug said: west side YUP deserves more love for sure for sure! mokitsu Posted December 6, 2020 Author Posted December 6, 2020 (edited) SONGS: early on his new album, perfume genius gets scarily personal with "jason". it's a sweet ballad that focuses more on his lyrics and delivery, although the hapsichord playing (that reminds me a lot of tori amos' early stuff!) gives me life. it tells the story of a hookup he had in his 20s with a closeted man and how his inexperience and being uncomfortable with his sexuality translated into actions, like how he kept his clothes on, cried and then asked Mike to leave the next day. it's a relatable song and i love hearing gorgeous songs like these about the universality of the gay experience. "ungodly hour" is what happens when some of the most talented siblings in the industry combine forces. an outlier in its parent album, this song is both funky and sleek, with a cold and distant feel that matches the song's themes of basically telling a man to **** off and heal somewhere else. it really takes someone as talented as chloe and halle to pull this off, because their vocals and harmonies elevate this song to a higher plane of existence. they showed they can take on radio pop and do it better than most girls. i dont knowwww why jojo's album is so damn underrated and even hated! there weren't a lot of great r&b albums this year, but i feel like she had one of the most "classic" ones. but we'll get to that later. "comeback" is my favorite song on "good to know", and her most explicitly sexual song. the beat is nasty, her vocals soar through it and well, she's talking her ****. stream the t*ry lanez free version! just months after releasing her fourth album "sunshine kitty", tove lo came back with "bikini ****" (and "passion and pain", which is equally great, if completely different). with production by finneas, it's expected that it would be a little weird and qUiRkY but to me, it works! there's a handclap loop with what seems like a bird call throughout, and the production keeps adding elements and building up into what sounds like a darker and more demonic song. lyrically, it's classic trashy fun tove - as expected from that title - and the use of vocoder is wonderful and really uplifts the song. "passion and pain" is a great companion song to "bikini ****" and shows the duality of tove, and how that partying and carelessness can be a way to cover up bigger issues. weirdly placed in the middle of loona's latest ep is "fall again", a beautiful, jazzy r&b ballad reminiscent of red velvet, that might not be a fan favorite, but i can't help but love it. the girls do a great job vocally and their delivery is spot on and emotional. mokitsu Posted December 6, 2020 Author Posted December 6, 2020 EPs: i just realized this is a single (tringle?) and not an ep, oh well. i don't know much about nature, but i randomly saw a clip of "girls" on twitter and i was intrigued by the production and the music video, which is like a horror movie and it's so explicit (i guess, for kpop standards) they had to make a censored version. all three songs explore a tropical sound with electropop and synthpop influences but each have a different vibe ("girls" is darker and more aggressive, "dive" is more chill, and "BBB" is your standard summer song), so it makes for a short and diverse but cohesive listen. favorite tracks: dive, girls i don't care much about kai or exo, but after taemin's successful solo album this year i definitely got my hopes up for kai's solo debut. he ended up surprising me! this ep is definitely in the same vein as taemin's solo work, with the same dark pop and r&b influences. every song is killer, especially the "starboy" era weeknd midtempo "ride or die" with a chill inducing synthfunk breakdown near the end. although as expected the vocals leave something to be desired, kai can definitely carry this ep on his own and i can't wait for his future projects. favorite tracks: amnesia, ride or die pay attention to gwsn!!!!! they're one of the only kpop groups that keep giving something left field, creative and unique each comeback, and their quality control and consistency is insane. they caught my attention with "bazooka!", an explosive nu-disco influenced track that lies somewhere the pure fun of "disco" and the sophistication of "future nostalgia". the b-sides are equally as great, with the jazzy bop "wonderboy", the house track "tweaks" (that wouldn't sound of place on kylie's "fever") and a foray into alternative pop with the autotune-drenched closer "after the bloom". this ep is truly stunning in its quality and diversity and with "bazooka" becoming their biggest hit internationally i can't wait for their next chapter. favorite tracks: wonderboy, tweaks i always found troye to be a little...forced artistically, like he was trying too hard to do something interesting with pop music while lacking the range to execute those ideas properly. however, i really can't deny that "in a dream" is a victory for him. the dreamy synthpop he's been perfecting since his debut ep reaches its current peak in this 7 song ep, and it truly feels like something fresh and innovative in a sea of bland pop music. while i never cared for him much, watching troye grow into an artist i can respect, who shows maturity and can sing about the nuances and unique aspects of sexuality as a gay man, has been truly impressive to watch and i hope he continues to do so with his upcoming releases. favorite tracks: easy, 10/10, in a dream and here is the #1!!! any of the eps in the top three are equally as good and important to me, but i chose "hurricane" as the top one given how i discovered her randomly and how unknown and underrated she is. these four tracks are alternative inspired folk songs and with her commanding, powerful voice i was drawn in and fell in love instantly. it's jasmine's debut ep but with how meticulously produced it is, how great her vocals and harmonies are and how wonderfully she sets a nocturnal and urgent mood, you'd think she was a pro. i hope she gets in some netflix coming of age movie or something and blows up because it's really some of the best music i've heard in this genre and i can't wait for her to show us more. favorite tracks: running circles, hurricane
Blue Rose Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 So... how relatable is Jason? I liked Troye’s EP too

BlackoutZone Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 Great song choices! My relationship with fall again is a bit weird, cause I do appreciate the song for what it is, but I can't help but compare it to RV songs of the same kind that I love so much and it's just not there. I thought girls was fine, but I didn't feel like playing it again, maybe I will check the full project. KAI washed, he did TAEMIN better than TAEMIN himself this year Will definitely listen to GWSN now In a Dream of course his best project and I'm so glad he keeps going further

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 6, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 6, 2020 btw, i checked out the voodoo song you recommended and stanned. luv rnb like that. wow i didn't know you were such a huge kpop stan tbh! but the top 5 is good. i dont know the #1. theres only one perfume genius song i liked this year, but i liked it a . lot. didnt even know you could get that much out of his songs. lmao. ungodly hour the song is yeah, the best on the album quite easily (and the albums pretty good). i dunno if i'd call it an outlier, but it does feel like it has more in common with their first album than this second.
Alex Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 ungodly hour, comeback, bikini god back to back classics
1998tweety Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 Yasss Kai and Troye kinda served this year. Ungodly Hour is gorg too, hoping to see a few more of their tracks on the list
Enigmanotta Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 The second half of your EPs list served I really have to give GWSN a chance, I've been postponing them for months now....
