mokitsu Posted December 13, 2020 Author Posted December 13, 2020 (edited) SONGS despite not having the best year - releasing singles that were panned and failed to make a chart impact, not to mention catching COVID some days ago - chung ha blessed the gays with "stay tonight", a dance masterpiece inspired by deep house and the voguing scene. the mutating production would be interesting on its own - while not being a metamorphosis monster like snsd's "i got a boy", it has its fair share of sections and buildups and the no second in the song is truly similar to the previous. with her huge vocals, however, the song reaches euphoric heights and it's truly one of the most sophisticated yet forward thinking songs in kpop this year. "if you're too shy" is basically where the 1975 have worked years to get to. since their synthy pop rock debut with an 80s touch, they've expanded their sound and lyrical content to examine the world, how we interact and communicate in the 21st century - and obviously, online relationships. and after a one minute dreamy intro with fka twigs' gorgeous falsetto, the action starts: a guitar and drums with so much reverb that it sounds like you're in an empty stadium and a funky new wave beat that is so 80s that it comes paired with a sax solo. in this, matty tells a tale as old as facetime: meeting someone online and getting intimate with them, as well as the feeling of emptiness that comes when you can't reach them immediately through your phone. classic 1975 and a strong contender for their best song. while a great performance and choreo can't save a bad song, it can certainly elevate a great one. and "naughty" is, at least to me, inseparable from it's jaw dropping choreography, with vogue and tutting moves so precise and intense that it took a couple of skilled performers three months to perfect it. the song itself is new ground for red velvet - a dancepop number with an underlying house beat and steely, hard drums that underline both the playful sensuality and tension of the number. in her boiler room dj set, charli opened up with "anthems", which quickly transitioned to darude's eclectic trance classic. they do sound a lot alike, and it's no wonder charli took inspiration from the club staple turned meme for the most brash party song in "how im feeling now". if the album was mostly about the reflections about her life and relationships during quarantine, "anthems" is directly about being locked up: after opening with "i'm so bored", we go through a list of mind numbing stuff charli (and the rest of us) did to distract ourselves from the killer virus outside. it's a shout into the void, and through the nine word chorus we get a pretty clear idea of what she misses most. it's a perfect snapshot of 2020, and most importantly, a song that goes hard as ****. nobody worked as hard as chloe x halle throughout this quarantine. the pandemic might have stifled their promotion plans for their sophomore album, but if there's one thing that the countless performances and remixes of "do it" proved is that it's a fundamentally excellent song that builds off the charisma and chemistry the bailey sisters have with each other. it works perfectly as the introduction to a grown up side to them, moving away from the disney universe their debut presented to a world where drama and baby mamas exist (but aren't invited). their carefree attitude, an unmatched ear for harmonies and adlibs and that simple but catchy chorus make this an essential track for me, and while it's not exactly a club banger, listening to it always takes me back to the messy nights when going to one was possible. mokitsu Posted December 13, 2020 Author Posted December 13, 2020 ALBUMS any doubts and worries i had about kali's sophomore album were erased within the first thirty seconds of its opening track. it's really not a much different album from "isolation" - which was one of my favorite albums of 2018, and it probably made my top 10 list in such a stacked list - the synths are there, the soul and funk influences are there, but it's definitely refreshing to see kali sound more in her element, more comfortable and more sure of herself in this album, surrounded by latin elements that undoubtedly mean a lot to her. kali's voice has a perfect mix of detachment, sensuality and melancholy that particularly works with the reggaeton tracks. despite not being very familiar with this album since it just came out, it's safe to safe that "sin miedo" is an win for kali, and an album i'll have on repeat for a while. favorite songs: telepatía, aguardiente y limon, vaya con dios i admit that i had little hopes for a haim comeback. "something to tell you" was okay, yeah, a little bit overhated, but a pretty reductive and watered down rehash of their great debut album. with "summer girl", one of my favorite tracks of 2019, i was fully back on. and even if nothing on the album sounds like the breezy jazz of that song, "women in music" does a great job of reintroducing us to the haim sisters. it doesn't even pretend to care about the indie rock run through an early instagram filter aesthetic and sound of their debut, drawing inspiration from electronic music as much as synthpop and creating rock songs that sound new and fresh, even sacrificing the structure and killer hooks for a more experimental approach. it's also refreshingly rough around the edges and personal, with the sisters opening up (for the first time?) about tough subjects like death and depression in a way that's both poetic and out of ****s. a very well deserved album of the year nominee, and one i'll be rooting for! favorite songs: summer girl, gasoline, leaning on you despite being released a few days before 2020 started, i couldn't not include red velvet's third album, which is one i've played consistently ever since its release to this date. "reve festival" leans more into their explosive pop side, and as a result its more all over the place than the grounded, r&b infused genius of their previous full length album "perfect velvet". despite its weirder and more divisive moments like "umpah umpah" and "zimzalabim" (which i love), there's also a lot of well crafted and produced dance pop that really wouldn't sound out of place on a western pop girl's album, as well as the trademark red velvet r&b cuts like the stunningly dreamy "eyes locked, hands locked" and the sparkly city pop-inspired "ladies night" and "lp". this album sees the kpop legends owning the fun, bubbly dancepop sound of their biggest hits while giving us new sides to them. hopefully they don't take the "finale" title seriously, though. favorite songs: psycho, lp, eyes locked, hands locked after dropping some blockbuster singles in these past few years, ellie goulding took to instagram to make it clear that those were just for fun and that the upcoming album would be something completely different. and thankfully, it wasn't a false promise. "brightest blue" opens with a crowd cheering - probably a big festival audience lined up to hear her smash hits. but to ellie, it wasn't a good feeling. even though her previous effort "delirium" has some of her biggest pop hits, she felt her art was disrespected and that it wasn't truly what she wanted to do. so she retreated, and "brightest blue" was born. despite having some label-demanded pop hits tacked on at the end (which i deleted and pretend don't exist), it's mostly a mellow (art?) pop record that's reminiscent of her early work. unlike many "return to form" records, it doesn't sound like a musician trying to get their indie cred back. it's a much more intricate and polished reincarnation that showcases her love for electronic and classical music. and even though she just got married, there's no sappy love ballads here - the (beautiful) lyrics deal with her regaining independence as a woman, during and after a toxic, abusive relationship. although i've never been a fan, it's great to see her get her groove back, and i'm pleasantly surprised this album is so good. favorite songs: power, start, new heights "blood" was a great breakthrough (and introduction, for me) to lianne la havas. her soulful inspirations were clear and the songwriting was sharp and personal, and her textured voice soared through pop arrangements. but in her third album, it truly feels like lianne at her best and most comfortable. it's more simple and stripped back, almost folksy at some points, but full of percussion and rhythm. it's intricate and truly masterful, warm and lush with tropical tones. it truly shines in its simplicity, highlighting her powerful and distinct voice - one that's full of soul, story and emotion - and her songwriting, though not as intimate as its predecessor, detail the story and the cycle of a relationship, equating it with nature, flowers and butterflies. like she put it in a tweet, it's the album she always wanted to make - and her love for it shows in its tracks. favorite songs: weird fishes, courage, sour flower
Mr. Duff Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 The 1975 Their most recent album is so underrated - I actually think I prefer it over most of their albums
Navyofbadgals Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Do it and brightest blue 1975 turrible
Psycho Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Stay Tonight and Naughty house bops Anthems is catchy but too noisy Do It too overrated We have WIMPIII at the same spot yas Reve Festival is cute but Dumb Dumb and Perfect Red Velvet >
Remmy Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 anthems is an absolute knock!!! my favorite from the album. Do It also goes off || WIM3 has some solid moments, never been a HAIM fan and it was actually the first full project I've heard from them. Then I heard previews of the others and just picked out a few tracks that sounded good. I wasn't in love with Brightest Blue, still enjoyed it for the most part. Gasoline + Power in your favorites
Enigmanotta Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Stay Tonight, Naughty, Anthems, Do It, The ReVe Festival, Brightest Blue
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 13, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2020 lol. i didn't know charli did that with darude sandstorm but now i can't unhear it whenever i listen to the song. thanks! naughty is better than monster. there i said it! and im glad you chose stay tonight, i think you know what i already think of it seems we're in agreement. poor girl, hope she recovers from covid. that cxh song is high for the top 10! shoulda been another, but im still glad to see them represented. im kind of shocked you liked brightest blue that much tbh. i agree its better than her last, but i'd say the tacked on songs were the best on the album too lol. red velvet is cheating! but you kinda had tea.
TalkThatRihanna Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Do It is so high on so many peoples lists, I love to see it
BlackoutZone Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Do It is really great, but I'm one of the people who prefer the title track a little bit more Naughty was definitely an instant highlight of the project, but the chorus production aged for me and I don't come back to it much, the melody is still strong af tho ReVe obviously a career highlight, they just can't stop serving as a whole group
Tom Vercetti Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Favorite song set so far. Anthems has been relatable for many of us throughout the year. Stay Tonight and Naughty are some of the respective groups best songs. Album wise, I think Kali does stick with more of a unified sound since Isolation is more like a "buffet" of difference genre inspirations. I haven't listened to her album enough though to really be in tune with it.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Charli getting acclaim WE LOVE TO SEE IT Do It is ****ing masterpiece HAIM and Ellie did surprise me too with their records Lianne praise and as always thank u for your writing, such a pleasure to read!
hjelp Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Lianne's album was a nice change of pace for her. I like the new sound ReVe but the Remember Forever snub is not cute
dreamofyou Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 anthems goes hard, i need an album full of those from miss xcx
1998tweety Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 The kpop girlies ate this year up! Stay Tonight and Naughty are both amazing gay bops. The ReVe Festival felt a little all over the place, but it's understandable seeing as it's multiple projects stitched together. Overall a good album though!
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 13, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2020 do it women in music and lianne 4 goddesses, literally brightest blue overrated xx
Sunderland 4ever Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 I just checked Lianne Le Havas a few days ago. Such a good discovery. I also like HAIM's record.
