madonnas best of 2020 - AOTY ANNOUNCED

Knew Shygirlies would be your top EP, so I'm glad Christine was able to make it into top 2 (and she was number 2). Christine, I totally understand why people would think she's boring before Chris but most people have the opposite effect and whine that they want the debut sound back nnn. I started stanning from her live performances which is why I was more into her than her music initially, but then I REALLY stanned with Chris.

Risk It I'm glad snuck in; my favorite from her album. Astrid S makes me wanna vomit outside of one song. Man's World YAAAAAS every year around Best Of time I remember your FROOT stanning in 2015 and I was shaking. WTF, good but not my fave Miley track.

First Class Bitch is FLAAAAAWLESS well I'd pick most of the debut's songs over it but, STILL. Stud is a great pick, don't let the haters get you. You're welcome re: Shinichiro. Do you have a preference between the Space or Earth mix? They're BASICALLY the same but.

Interesting Seth, La Roux, and Lianne picks, but I do like them all and liked all their albums. Great Kylie pick; it's so campy and silly (obviously the DJ goes back home after the party Kylie, now drink a water and sober up).

wtf do i know and stud are cute

you could replace 21st century with any other song on the album except gullible fool and it will still be the same :cm:

Kylie came and served pop excellence this year - showing these new girls that they have nothing on legends. :clap3:

Stud is cute, so is Teary Eyes and 21st Century. :duca:

160.  austra - risk it

genre: synth pop

for fans of: tr/st, zola jesus

a cute bop.  i needed a solid number so i added this song in.

159.  riki - napoleon

genre: darkwave

for fans of: tr/st, siouxsie and the banshees

its a pretty faithful gothic synthpop interpretation, which is am totally 100% into.

158.  brave girls - we ride

genre: kpop, city pop

for fans of: yukika, nugu girl groups

found out about this today, if i knew about it earlier it would probably be 50 or so spots higher.

157.  katy perry - teary eyes

genre: pop, dance pop

for fans of: chromatica, this is what the truth feels like

a good katy perry cut, congrats miss perry.

156.  lotic - cocky

genre: art pop

for fans of: le1f, klein

i hate and love this at the same time.  but i do love it, so here you go.

155.  astrid s - dance dance dance

genre: mall pop

for fans of: ava max, alice chater

d list pop girl trying to have her own dancing on my own moment.  its good for what it is, and we all are in the mood for stuff like this sometimes.

154.  utada - time

genre: jpop, rnb

for fans of: shiina ringo, utada in general

the outro section takes this song to another level.  spent a good amount of the year forgetting about this song so it got placed relatively low because of it.  thats a lot of songs in the first two updates.

153.  marina - man's world

genre: pop

for fans of: marina's froot era

yeah, she's good at giving us froot leftovers and ill eat it up.  her songwriting is super camp and i love singing along to it.

152.  everglow - la di da

genre: synthpop, kpop

for fans of: weeknd, twice

this is basically a rehash of blinding lights by a kpop girl group.  it has a strong chorus.

151.  purity ring - better off alone

genre: synth pop, trance

for fans of: early y2k dance classics

a good cover that does the original justice by giving the song a new feeling instead of just a boring rehash.

150.  naeem - woo woo woo

genre: hip hop, art pop

for fans of: le1f, cloud rap, shygirl

yeah, this is spank rock who's been kind of hit and miss his entire career but his album this year had some really good songs.  i truly enjoy the sorta manic group energy going on here and amanda blank makes a return and it brings me back to when i was 17 and stanning her lmao.

149.  wjsn chocome - hmph!

genre: kpop

for fans of: crayon pop

its one of these crayon-pop esque pop songs from a wjsn subunit.  theres always a few songs released that sound like ths, and well this is the best one we got this year!  it has good replay value.

148.  miley cyrus - wtf do i know

genre: pop rock

for fans of: cant be tamed, 80s cheese.

yeah, this is a really really good intro to her album, its a song that works as a "this is the new me" statement.  and, in spite of it being miley cyrus, i actually buy it!

147.  honey dijon - la femme fantastique

genre: house

for fans of: cakes da killa/azealia banks, ballroom voguing type music

hmmm yes honey work slay etc.  this is a really fun song.

146.  harunemuri - ファンファーレ

genre: noise rock, pop rock

for fans of: anybody who likes rock music should like this

ah yes, the best song on her ep is probably the first or the fifth.  i couldn't choose so i just picked this.  seriously get the **** into her if you haven't already.

145.  asap ferg - move ya hips

genre: hip hop

for fans of: mainstream hip hop club songs

really really really good chorus, it sticks in your head for days on end.  nicki delivers too.

144.  confidence man - first class bitch

genre: nu disco, electroclash

for fans of: deee lite, magdalena bay

i love the sound that confidence man have carved out, this is more of the same from their debut.

143.  troye sivan - stud

genre: synth pop

for fans of: tumblrcore, halsey

ugh i know this shouldn't be my pick from the ep but i just can't help but love the lyrics to death, its a tumblr pop song that rises above the rest.

142.  shinichiro yokota - space station

genre: house

for fans of: little boots, she's featured on it

AH thank you to @Ewan Chaos for telling me of this songs existence.  well, it can't be that high if i just found out about it.

141.  park hye jin - like this

genre: deep house, outsider house

for fans of: sad girl electronic music, peggy gou

this is the essential song off of her ep.  its got lots of great asmr vibes.

140.  seth bogart - oh bondage up yours

genre: pop rock, dance punk

for fans of: late 70s punk

omg this samples an x ray spex songs (same title) that is an absolute classic, so its obviously my favorite off his second album.  honestly if you liked his first, you'd like his second album, but probably not as much.

139.  keiyaa - hvnli

genre: alt rnb

for fans of: kilo kish

omggg, she's so good, this is her most addictive song and probably the best introduction to her stellar album.

138.  la roux - 21st century

genre: synth pop

for fans of: christine and the queens, chillwave

she got the chill tropical synth pop deadpan sound perfected at this point.

137.  lianne la havas - weird fishes

genre: neo soul

for fans of: radiohead? india arie

this is a really powerful and well done radiohead cover.  her vocals take me there.

136.  cakes da killa - don dada

genre: house, hip house

for fans of: azealia banks

the standout from his ep which i covered earlier, its got a very memorable hook which makes me come back to it frequently.

135.  maurice fulton - jigoo

genre: deep house

for fans of: park hye jin, yaeji

so this song is a collaboration with peggy gou, so if you liked what peggy gou had to offer last year, you will like this song.

134.  jazmine sullivan - pick up your feelings

genre: contemporary rnb

for fans of: 00s rnb

jazmine is really good at telling a story and painting a lyrical picture, while still making the song super melodic.

133.  melt yourself down - 100% yes

genre: post punk

for fans of: parquet courts, sons of kemet

this is sort of post punk meets 90s ska.  if that sounds interesting to you, check it out.

132.  kylie minogue - where does the dj go?

genre: disco! (actually, nu disco and electroclash)

for fans of: future nostalgia

im a sucker for a slow start to a fast paced song.

131. sg lewis - impact

genre: disco, electropop

for fans of: dev hynes and robyn

i looove the vocalist, and robyn sounds like a beautiful banshee screeching in the background.

MELT YOURSELF DOWN!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!! That song is so ****ing good too! Every single day was my favorite from that project, but whew such a good one.

and screaming at brave girls sneaking in :dies: let me check out the ones i dont know.

lemme catch up

I lowkey hated Not Shy and It'z Me because of the reasons you listen but it's an interesting perspective to find them refreshiing cause of them being so obnoxious and undercooked. Post-irony at its finest I guess?

the loon/a stanning :clap3:

maybe I should try out the Troye Ep kii. Same for Shygirl but I planned to give her a shot by the time the year ends

'

now onto the sings

teary eyes is deffo one of the better sings on slime

Miss Utada! I've been sleeping on her lately but it's generally hard for me to keep up with standalone singles

Where Does The DJ Go? is very ABBA-esque, I love it but Last Chance does the ABBA style better imo

I wasn't feeling the Park Hye Jin's EP tho :/

Jesus so MANY songs at once, but I have multiple of these on my list

I really loved STUD initially to the point it was my favorite IAD track, but now that it's all said and done TYH came back to claim the #1 spot

BOY you move so fast. Here I was unaware about the EP list lol. Ok - I didn't know Calvin released projects this year at all. Suga is indeed sharp. Your Itzy description makes me scream and i thought one of Loona's projects this year was fine. I liked Park's EP more than the Planet 1999 one although I like what that one went for too. I rock with Isabella and the neoperreo girls. And yep Christine EP was pretty solid af.

Need to check a few like: Kitty / Cakes / Tei Shi (u think i'd like her?) / Haru / Magdalena / Koto / maybe Blue Hawaii? / INDIA!! for sure.

1.  shygirl - alias

ShygirlALIAS.jpg

genre: uk bass, industrial hip hop

descriptors: slutty, cocky

for fans of: m.i.a., pc music, arca

best songs: freak, siren, leng

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.  honestly, this ep seems like something created in a laboratory made just to please me.  who else is making industrial slut pop like shygirl? nobody, because nobody has carved out this niche before.

AHHH QUEEN SHYGIRL TAKING THE CROWN!!!

whitney-houston-and-cece-winans-having-a

Sorry I didn't see this update until after the weekend. Yah i just realllly feel these tracks in my pleasure spot too (or at least it's like 5/7). I may agree w/ your fav songs. ... She's carved out a whole lane for herself so she'll def be one to watch. I wonder what she can do with an album now.

130.  eyedi - j.us.t

genre: synth pop, kpop

for fans of: neon bunny, yukika

okay, we love your indie synthpop kpop girl, but WHERE. IS. THE. ALBUM.  we WANT. THE DAMN. ALBUM.

129.  agnes - fingers crossed

genre: dance pop, house

for fans of: rachel stevens, robyn

this is basically an outtake of her last ep? it sounds like it, got a really nice chorus and her powerful vocals fits dance pop amazingly

128.  whigfield - suga

genre: edm, eurotrash

for fans of: the 2010 electroclash invasion, cascada

you know the band who did saturday night? that masterpiece? well they have released a single, and its just the amount of trashy behind the times electropop that you imagine it to be

127.  ionnalee - machine

genre: ebm, synth pop

for fans of: daf, tr/st

this song really really reminds me of der mousollini by daf.  its a nice one-off from her after she's been giving us mostly misses and pointless remixes lately.

126.  klo pelag - remora

genre: art folk

for fans of: late era susanne sundfor

this is such a beautiful slice of french art pop/folk. it also makes you wait for the best part of the song near the ending.

125.  planet 1999 - party

genre: chillwave

for fans of: bedroom pop

bedroom pop chillwave meets pc music.  its for fans of both.  tom described it better on his writeup and i already wrote abt the ep so here you go.

124.  foxes - love not loving you

genre: nu disco, synth pop

for fans of: haim

so, imagine if haim did a more synth funk inspired track in the vein of, say, shura.  thats what this song sounds like.  its awesome.

123.  yaeji - waking up down

genre: deep house

for fans of: repetitive music.

ummmmmmmm, yeah.  this chorus gets in my head.  been repeating it all day.  its not a raingurl club banger, but it has its own merits.  i think its a littllee underrated by the gays of atrl.

122.  poppy - sit/stay

genre: nu metal, electropop

for fans of: grimes, babymetal

ok so poppy's most obvious picks for soty were all from last year, so im going off of the 6 'new' tracks.  this is probably the most high energy and fast paced song on the album and the least ""metal"" (the album is already pretty looosely metal) of them all.  it bops.

121.  jockstrap - robert

genre: art pop, hip hop

for fans of: clipping?

yeah idk who jockstrap or injury reserve are tbqh, but they did their damn thing on this song.  shame on me for not checking out their other stuff.

120.  namasenda - wanted

genre: hyperpop

for fans of: hannah diamond

its got that hyperpop meets depressed sad girl who can barely let out an autotuned note sound but the instrumental is happy hardcore fast paced.  if you enjoy that juxtoposition this song is definitely for you.

119.  brandy - borderline

genre: modern rnb

for fans of: idk, brandy i guess

brandy is the queen of amazing vocal runs and thats all this song is pretty much.

118.  sylvan esso - ferris wheel

genre: synth pop

for fans of: "indie" pop

so sylvan esso sometimes have the habit of making their songs... boring even if their compositions are good.  this is their best song in a ****ing minute, as theres actually a pulse to it and you can sing along to it.

117.  carly rae jepsen - lets be friends

genre: dance pop

for fans of: britney jean

i love this song so much but it was kind of panned upon release. i just liked that it was a new vibe and tone for carly, plus its fun to sing along to.  she serves bratty kesha "raps" sometimes.

116.  okay kaya - psych ward

genre: folk pop

for fans of: idk, all the boring folk girls coming up

i hate this new crop of female singer songwriter critic bait.  i pretty much am bored by all of them, so i was pleasantly surprised when okay kaya gave me a solid album and this standout which is refreshing in its straight-forwardness and lack of pretention.

115.  buscabulla - el aprieto

genre: synth pop

for fans of: neon indian

so idk, sometimes theres a really good album and you have a really really hard time picking the song to be in your list.  well i went with my most played track which is the first full song.  check them out tbh, they're an easy listen.

114.  grimes - idoru

genre: art pop

for fans of: kate bush

grimes gave us some of her first contemplative tracks on miss anthropocene it seems.  this ending gives me heavy kate bush vibes/

113.  genevieve artradi - godzilaaaa

genre: art rock

for fans of: tune yards

this is basically tune yards except it doesn't make you slightly uncomfortable.  she's the singer in the band knower.  i was a little underwhelmed by the album as a whole but it had its kooky moments.

112.  georgia - ray guns

genre: dance pop

for fans of: m.i.a.

this is a straight up m.i.a. rip off.  im here for it.

111.  kero kero bonito - its bugsnax

genre: bitpop

for fans of: bonito generation kkb

if you liked bonito generation, you will like this kkb song, which was made for a video game that i've never played.  full circle, since they were heavily inspired by video game music themselves.

110.  blue hawaii - not my boss

genre: house, pop

for fans of: tei shi, christine and the queens

yeah, this more chant-y type song is the highlight of their very solid and respectable mixtape. you can hear yourself singing along w her when she says "im my own damn woman" over and over and over.

109.  clams casino - im god

genre: instrumental hip hop

for fans of: avalanches, imogen heap

this is the best thing imogen heap will ever be a part of.  it unironically sounds like what the stereotype of heaven looks like.

108.  pet shop boys - monkey business

genre: synth pop, house

for fans of: boomer gay music

totally tacky gay boomer music, but hey, its pet shop boys and i appreciate that they are still giving us new sounds for their discography.  they have a habit of sometimes being too slow and moody but when the bpm picks up they almost always deliver

107.  myss keta - photoshock

genre: house, hip hop

for fans of: charli xcx, azealia banks

this is the most pop friendly and danceable song she's ever released.  its got super deep house vibes mixed with sorta, uh hip hop i guess.  like the genre tag that i made says.  not much going on in terms of verses and choruses, just her mumbling, then saying photoshock.  but trust me its worth the listen.

106.  pva - divine intervention

genre: post punk, new wave

for fans of: 80s new wave and punk

i love the male/feamale vocal trade off.  yes, please give us dead energy new order vocals over a hypnotic dance beat.

105.  gwsn - bazooka

genre: kpop, bubblegum

for fans of: twice

yeah i love the more bubbly songs by kpop groups as compared to the hip hop styled tracks.  sorry i dont listen to girl groups for that kinda music most of the time.  bazooka just has an addictive chorus.

104.  against all logic - if loving you is wrong

genre: idm, post industrial

for fans of: nicolas jaar

i dont know, i dont even know how to describe this, its very very sample heavy.  i just like it.

103.  taylor swift - august

genre: folk pop

for fans of: idk, its a taylor swift song, you've already heard it.

yeah, this is definitely the best pop moment of folklore.  taylor swift shines best when shes at her poppiest, because her lyrics are usually the best.  no long tirades, just a few quality lines.

102.  koto -  合法ガール

genre: bitpop, jpop

for fans of: perfume, kero kero bonito

koto is just one of those artists that i will eat up whatever she puts out.

101.  bbymutha - nice guy

genre: hip hop

for fans of: bree runway

yung baby tate!! yeah, bbymutha delivered with her long awaited album this year, and nice guy is one of my favorite tracks she's ever done.  when you say "uh huh uhuh, you a nice guy.... but im a bad bitch" it sounds cliche, but trust me she pulls it off.
