Why don't females have strong catalog sales?

Recommended Posts

I compiled a list of sales of pre-2010 albums on the Billboard 200 (2014 to present) and here are the list of artists who managed to accumulate sales of at least 1 million copies with their old material.

Eminem

 3,600,000

Beatles

 3,500,000

Queen

 3,400,000

Michael Jackson

 2,900,000

Bob Marley

 2,600,000

Journey

 2,400,000

Creedence Clairwater

 2,100,000

2Pac

 1,900,000

Metallica

 1,600,000

Fleetwood Mac

 1,600,000

Tom Petty

 1,600,000

AC/DC

 1,500,000

Guns N'Roses

 1,300,000

Notorious B.I.G.

 1,300,000

Billy Joel

 1,300,000

Eagles

 1,200,000

Nirvana

 1,200,000

Red Hot Chili Peppers

 1,100,000

Prince

 1,000,000

I was kind of surprised seeing that no female artists made the list considering that there have been several females in the top 30 best selling artists of all time (Madonna, Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Barbra). So why are female catalogs not selling?

So all the albums combined before 2010 has to be 1M right? Thats what you calculated?

Actually i wonder this too. Most of those artists are benefiting a lot from their greatest hits compilation though.

how did Mariah not make it btw? Her old xmas album is selling every year at least 400k

Actually she only earned enough sales to place on the year end chart for the first time since 1995 this year because she pushed it alot with a reissue and videos and it still only ended up at 301k. So it definitely didn't sell 1m since 2014.

2Pac and Prince. :clap3:

In the real world, women as musicians are not that respected or valued as men, sadly.
The fact that neither Aretha, Madonna, Barbara nor Patti Smith made it.

Merry Christmas (2014-2020)

estimated sales: (USA)

2019 - 301,000

2018 - 206,000

2017 - 130,000

2016 - 102,000

2015 - 82,000

2014 - 64,000

= 885,000

It will most likely exceed 1,200,000 sps with the 2020 season. Making her one of the very few female acts to have had an album sell in excess of 1 million units since 2014.

This. Women are often viewed as label puppets being controlled by men in suits from behind the scenes. What veteran female artist is respected today? Not by pop culture enthusiasts, but by the GP? Madonna? No. (but she never was, don't come for me I love her). Mariah? No, too many vocal mishaps and the musings about her difficult personality. Janet? No. Celine? She stopped trying way too soon. It's sad really.

Toxic masculinity.

unfortunately it comes down to sexism in the way they're perceived as they age. Men are seen as legends and more wise and talented as they age, whereas the gp treat women as washed up has-beens once they age. it's gross and sad

Those pop divas don't seem to have a huge loyal female following either...

Female listeners are actually commercially powerful when a music act actually has one. Look at those past boy bands (Backstreet Boys) and Taylor.

Agreed. Plus a lot of them do embarrassing things that **** up the public perception of them

not to mention most of our female acts r still active. A lot of ppl on that list are either dead, or disbanded which preserves their legacy or haven’t released music in decades which makes their catalogue favorable. Also these are some massive legends. Only Madonna, Whitney, Janet and Mariah can stand.

greatest hits albums also kill catalogue sales usually

surprised Enya and Mariah is not here tho. I’m sure taylor and Adele will be here.
