luckystrike Posted April 7, 2020 Author Posted April 7, 2020 Spoiler Rihanna: FourFiveSeconds: Kanye terrorizing the song... it would’ve been just fine without him but he makes it a bit turrible Pour It Up: kind of a classic Opposites: they are very much polar opposites so you nailed that part, maybe you had better options to replace FFS that still would’ve worked but great job Britney Spears: Someday (I Will Understand): this was quite beautiful okay work I Wanna Go: dated bop Opposites: nailed it, almost like two different artists Katy Perry: Hot N Cold: one of her best songs, legendaric Birthday: this song has always been so average Opposites: well... I do not know how they are opposites, they’re both upbeat fun pop songs chile Janelle Monáe: PrimeTime: this was very sexy, maybe got a little bored but I liked the vibe Cold War: oh wow I was not expecting this, I really enjoyed it Opposites: very different from each other, you nailed it good job Ellie Goulding: Under the Sheets: a dated bop, I hadn’t heard this in so long Hate Me: I hated this when it came out but it grew on me so much a bop and the best song she’s released post-delirium (after Flux) Opposites: I see what you did with the synth/electro poppy vs. trappy beat, I like it, maybe I feel like you could’ve gone even more opposite but great job Spoiler @EriKills @A Public Affair @kiiwii @Dessy @touya kinomoto
genio Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Spoiler Rihanna 45S: this is a cute song, never really felt it like that but I don't hate it Pour It Up: A caviar ratchet BOP, one of my faves from Rihanna  Opposites: both are the complete opposite from each other, good job Britney Someday: I never heard this before. This was alright, she has better ballads I Wanna Go: dated and generic Opposites: Despite me not liking both entries, I think you still did a decent job at picking two different songs, albeit both are from the same genre Katy Birthday: such a great feel-good song, I always loved it Hot N Cold: sounds so dated and bad Opposites: both are pure pop + uptempo, I didn't get a strong opposite vibe here Janelle PrimeTime: I was honestly just very bored by this Cold War: Not feeling this either Opposites: they do sound very opposite from each other, so you did a good job there Ellie Under The Sheets: I liked this, sounded a bit too dated though but a bop Hate Me: decent song, never was into it but I was shook when I first heard it because it's so different from what she usually does Opposites: they're opposite from each other, but Hate Me still has strong pop elements in it, still a decent job Spoiler @EriKills @A Public Affair @kiiwii @Dessy @touya kinomoto
touya kinomoto Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 hi @Overprotected and @shelven. i hope you are both safe. we'll patiently wait for you critiques. love lots!
Overprotected Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Spoiler Rihanna: Um the judges lied, Rih’s vocals actually ruin FFS for me, her vocal breaks in the verses aren’t it. Anyway the song is just alright I much prefer Pour It Up although not by much. Overall: You did ok Britney Spears: I used to love Someday back when I stanned harder for her, it’s such an underrated song and I’m glad you chose it over another more known ballad from her, the songwriting talent whew. I Wanna Go issanother unexpected choice, not my favorite from Femme Tamale but it’s still a bop ngl. Her videos that era were so good compared to what we get now. Overall: Some judges might not appreciate the choices you made this round but I think you snapped with the challenge, the songs are complete opposites and yet her iconic voice brings them together. Katy Perry: Ok I hadn’t heard Birthday in a minute and I gotta say it snaps harder than I remembered Hot N Cold too omg I thought I would hate it for how it dated it sounds whew excellent choices… except not really. Overall: Reading comprehension is fundamental. The only difference between these songs is their chart peaks chile. Janelle Monae: Primetime issa cute little song, love seeing Miguel making a special appearance back in the game. The chorus doesn’t do much for me but I like the guitar solo, it also happens to be the element that makes it not sound so distinct from Cold Water which is a great song but it just reminded me that you could’ve easily sent two better opposites from The ArchAndroid alone. Overall: Well I already said it x Ellie Goulding: Hold on, I’m bopping to UTS I absolutely love the groovy production in this, but I was suppose to tank Ellie this round and finally get rid of her but even the lesser song Hate Me it’s a bit of a bop welp. Overall: Well they aren’t complete opposites but they’re still feel different enough x @EriKills @A Public Affair @kiiwii @Dessy @touya kinomoto
shelven Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Spoiler Rihanna: FourFiveSeconds: One of Rihanna’s most underrated singles tbh. I’ve always really liked this song - it’s so relaxing and calming, and it’s so different from her normal music (some might say it shows off her… diversity!) I wish Kanye wasn’t on the song, but overall it’s pretty great. Pour It Up: Another underrated Rihanna single, whew. I know this song often gets the shaft compared to her other urban singles, but this is one of my favourite Urban Rih singles. It’s SO catchy and the production is so smooth. Once in a while it feels a bit too repetitive, but still really good. Opposites: You absolutely nailed this contrast and I don’t think there’s anything I would have done differently. These two songs do a really great job at highlighting two very different sides of Rih’s discography - they almost feel like they’re made by two fundamentally different artists, but they still have Rihanna’s signature voice and nuances connecting them. Britney Spears: Someday: It’s a cute ballad, but it never really goes beyond that tbh. I wish it was either punchier or more emotional - it’s pretty as it is, but it’s not that memorable and I probably wouldn’t give this song a second glance if it wasn’t by a big pop artist like Britney. I Wanna Go: Whew the way I was obsessed with this song back when it was released. Is it dated as hell and sort of messy today? Yes definitely. But does that stop me from liking it and bopping to it? Absolutely not. It’s still a very catchy and fun song and the only real “dated” aspect of it that bothers me is how annoyingly noisy the chorus is. Opposites: So you went for a pretty obvious contrast here - pretty ballad vs loud pure pop bop - but that’s not necessarily a bad thing since you did what the challenge asked for. But I will say that even though they’re sonically different, they both still feel like they’re coming from the same pop girl, so the contrast isn’t massive for me. Katy Perry: Birthday: This song has always annoyed the sh*t out of me, I’m so sorry dfjkngkf. This is the exact type of overly sugary, pure bubblegum pop that I just really can’t get into. It’s so loud and noisy and it’s just so bland. Points for the catchy horns I guess, but this is honestly one of my least favourite Katy singles ever. Hot ’n’ Cold: Ok now THAT’s more like it. Going from one of my least favourite Katy singles ever to one of my favourites. Tbh I kind of forgot how dated so many elements of this song are, but like I said for Britney, I don’t really care if something is dated if I still enjoy listening to it, and I definitely still really like listening to this song. Always puts me in a good mood. Opposites: I’ll give you some credit for not going with an overly predictable or obvious comparison, but like… these songs sound WAY too similar to be considered “opposites”. I could understand this choice if the round asked for songs of two different styles, but I just can’t justify these as being opposites at all. They’re both upbeat, loud and they practically have the exact same BPM nnn. Janelle Monae: PrimeTime: Ooh this is so sultry and smooth. Janelle and Miguel go very well together and I really like the production of the song. My only complaint is that beginning at around the 3 minute mark, the vocals start to get really uncomfortably loud and grating? Like the last two choruses where they’re harmonizing don’t really work and the vocal mixing is definitely off. But other than that, it’s a nice song. Cold War: Oh my god wow I LOVE this. Everything about this works so well for me. I love how punchy it is, I love how fast-paced and catchy it is, I love her different styles of vocal delivery throughout the song, I love the guitar solo. Really really enjoyed this, definitely one of my favourite songs from Janelle you’ve used throughout this game. Opposites: I think you did what the Katy contrast seemed to be trying to do, but you were way more successful at it. You avoided going down a predictable or obvious route, but the two songs still feel very different and definitely show off two different sides of Janelle. This was interesting choice for this round, but it works well for me. Ellie Goulding: Under The Sheets: I’ve never heard this song before and it’s kind of taking me on an interesting ride. I really like parts of it, but other parts feel VERY basic and generic. It’s a good song, but I feel like there’s an even better song trapped somewhere inside it that’s being held back. Hate Me: Once you mentally move past the fact that this is simpler and less artistically interesting than some of her past material, this song is actually pretty good and a nice bop. I think as far as rap features go, Juice Wrld (RIP) works very well on this song and overall it’s a nice, smooth listen. Yeah there are definitely parts that are basic and bland, but it’s not bad by any means. Opposites: Hmm… I don’t necessarily think this is a BAD choice, but I think you had better options. You can definitely hear very different styles between the two songs and you can tell Ellie has changed as an artist between them, so you meet the challenge in that way, but there’s still quite a few sonic similarities between the songs, so I don’t think you nailed the idea of choosing the most different sounding songs possible.
