Welcome castaways to your 3rd results show! Below will be the rates of each entry from all three judges. @URBAN and @kipperskipper were unable to judge this round, so @Element and I stepped in to do it. You were all rated on a scale of 1 to 10. Your average score will be combined into a tribe average which will determine which tribes are losing a member.

After I reveal the scores, I will post the final results which will include how you ranked on your tribe, against all castaways, and finally the overall tribe rankings this round.

The top two tribes will be winning while the other two tribe will be headed to Tribal Council where they will vote off one member each!

  • This song could have been the example for this round. He explains his problems so well in the verses and tries to find himself in the chorus. You nailed it!

  • Honestly...this actually works perfectly. Great choice, bowdown!

  • Excellent choice for this round! He really takes us through his frustrations and how he feels this depression is going to be permanent.

  • what a great way to start this round! this is amazing. i feel depressed now. wig.

 

Boys - Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water 

• prézli - 6.5
  • Even though, she mentions that she keeps fighting and wants to take back her own life, there are some missing points: she sings about her wishes to go to the surface of the water, but we don’t know the causes. What/who makes her to do this? What does she go through? All we see is the triumph of her fight against something.

  • So, I never really imagined this song as a depression song, but looking at the lyrics, I get it. Definitely not crystal clear though but solid.
• Element - 8.5
  • This is a pretty solid entry IMO. You really feel how earnest the lyrics are and how the currents are literally holding her down. Sometimes I find the verses to be a bit vague, but the chorus and bridge (especially) are fantastic for the theme.

  • this is not that bad tbh. while its not going to the super depressed mode, it still kinda works for this round. 

 

Gateau - Christina Vee - Bad Apple (English Version)

  • Did you guys check out the example entry that the hosts gave you? She’s in the darkest place in her life and doesn’t see the right way to get out. There are some lines where she cries for help (e.g. “But It wouldn't mean a thing if I told you how I feel”), but she pushes herself back immediately (“But I doubt that I would care”).

  • It’s a weird entry. Like it’s not bad by any means, but her voice is weird. BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LYRICS. Lyrically, it hits on the depression piece but just misses out on the wanting to get out of that state. There’s no progression sadly.

  • The first verse establishes the theme very descriptively. The second verse kind of detours it from the challenge prompt with how she doesn’t seem like she necessarily wants to make those first steps to recovery. Fear is definitely present.

  • for you, ghetto, i feel the same way as i felt with boys’ entry this round.

 

Moonlightbae - Noah Cyrus - Lonely

• prézli - 9
  • Not as great as Sad Forever, but it’s still decent! In the song, Noah tries to hide her loneliness by partying, drinking and spending money, but she realizes it’s not the good way to get herself back. For me, it’s almost rather about alcoholism than depression. (Does alcoholism come from depression?)

  • Wow, she’s wicked talented. This was a great choice for me that really illustrated the depression of it all, combined with the reaching out for help.
• Element - 9
  • This is simple but effective. She outlines her depressed behaviors and thoughts, how everything is the same, and she reaches out for help during the chorus. Nice choice.

  • this is great. she is clearly depressed so her way of getting out of it is getting drunk and going to parties. but she still feels sad. urgh poor thing.

fiercE - blink-182 - Adam’s Song

• prézli - 4.5
  • Eh, not a good fit. He struggles with depression, he clearly says it in the lyric. Actually, he’s exhausted from touring and fed up with people around him, that’s why he doesn’t ask for help from anyone. In the last chorus, he believes better days will come by, but he’s not ready to overcome this mental state yet as “I get home / To pass the time in my room alone”.

  • Ok, so I waffled with this because while I do think this hits on the depression thing, it’s not hard enough and focuses more on the suicidal intention, coupled with him not following through with it at the very end..

  • “Song does not hit the theme given besides a line or two”... Yes he mentions that he’s depressed, but this song seems to be much more a lament about how the past was better versus how he is stuck in a rut in the present. I would have wanted much more focus on the current experience.

  • yeah while we know that he is soooo depressed, it seems he doesnt care to ask for help. he just gives up.

 

Disruptive - Demi Lovato - Anyone

• prézli - 8.5
  • Fresh out the oven. It fits the task well, my only problem with the song is that she cries for help a little too much. She feels lonely, thinks nobody understands her, it’s like blaming the other people for her depression, but she should need to find the mistakes inside of her first.

  • ANYONEEEEEEEEEE. PLEASE SEND ME ANYONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Good entry obviously.

  • Well thank GOD I don’t have to listen to the audio of this to judge lmao. This is a strong choice for the round! She definitely takes us through her own unique experience of hopelessness and how she wants support to get her through this tough time.

  • whew miguel sending anyone in every game he’s in lmao. anyway, this is another great song for this round. its just that there are some songs that are a little bit better. but you did great luv!

 

Alena - Olivia O’Brien - Empty

• prézli - 7.5
  • One of the better entries this round from the tribe, but it’s not quite there. She tries to find the way back to her old self (“Wish I could erase my memories / So I could stop feeling so empty”), but it feels like she’s not strong enough to overcome her depression alone.
• rl231 - 7
  • I’m going to echo the 7’s here. She’s definitely depressed and whatnot, but I’m not really sure if she’s trying to get out of it completely. I mean, she literally says, “I can’t fix this mess I’m making.” 
• Element - 7
  • This one is kind of strange for me. It definitely references our theme at certain points (Yeah I'm ****ed up but I don't wanna be) but at other times, I don’t know if she’s talking more about how the world sucks vs. how she is depressed. It’s definitely in the vicinity of what we wanted but not all the way there.

  • i feel like this one is kinda okay? she goes back and forth on wanting to survive and giving up on everything. and it doesnt feel like shes asking for help.

 

Staryu - Gary Jules - Mad World

• prézli - 2.5
  • A big fat NO. It’s not 1 or 2 points because the song talks about depression at least, but it also hints (and that’s the bigger part in here) that the only escape from the “mad world” is death. After a perfect entry from round 1, I’m mad (world) indeed.
• rl231 - 3.5
  • A misfire. So I love the song, and it definitely feels depressing, but it’s not a full-on depression song. The problem is that it’s not truly the same as the theme or close to it. 
• Element - 3
  • There are really only two lines that work for this theme… “The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had” and “I wanna drown my sorrow”... but it doesn’t really take us through the throes of depression like many other submissions this round.

  • hmm, this is a very beautiful song but i feel like it doesnt really fit the theme. yes, we know hes depressed or tired of this ****ed up world, but he just gives up. urgh you couldve done a lot better staryu.

 

dussymob - The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

  • (We love a classic, but Ciara’s cover version is better by miles.) Gross. This song is depressive, but it’s not the only thing what the task needed at all. I don’t see how he wants to go back to the normal feelings or he asks for someone’s help.

  • When you submitted this, I yelled, “No, dussymob, no!” Yes, it’s about depression, but there’s literally no change and he literally wants everyone else to be depressed.

  • I think this song is really metaphoric, but it’s not hard to see that it’s about depression. They try to find the way out of it. They keep falling back, but they won’t give it up. It’s not the maximum points because I guess there are better entries this round, but good job!

  • I’m not a major Billie Eilish fan, but I dig the song and it works really well. Not like a certain 10 though.

  • This is ALMOST a ten… it could have used just a little more description about their daily experience of depression IMO. Excellent choice though that just falls under the top entries of the round.

  • AHHHHHHH one of my go-to depressed songs i wish i could give you a 10 but there are better songs in this round. you did AMAZING though!

 

luckystrike - Noah Cyrus - Good Cry

  • Drunk Noah Cyrus strikes back. I see more depression in this than the other song, however, she just says sorry and cries here. Even though, she knows what she does is wrong, she doesn’t try to change on the things at all and that’s where it doesn’t meet the criteria of the round.

  • This one feels more like a transient period of sadness… like maybe she just went through a breakup? Depression runs deeper... Side note, this was kind of a bop tbh.

Anthem - Robbie Williams - Feel

  • I always thought this song was about wishing a true lover in his life, but looking at its lyrical content closer, you might be right with this choice. Might be. I don’t find this song that depressive, it’s rather desperate. But the structure of the song works as he feels (hehe) lost in the verses, but is hopeful in the chorus.

  • This isn’t really depression to me at all but just listlessness. And yes, while listlessness is part of depression, there’s so much more to it that the song just doesn’t hit on. It’s like I’m dipping my toe into the jacuzzi, and then Robbie tells me it’s too hot and that I should wait.

  • I’m not getting this one honestly. There’s a few verses that work for the round but it just feels very vague overall. Is this depression or something else?

  • In the song, she realizes her depression, but fears to face with the problems (e.g. “Waiting for my problems / To fix themselves”). She doesn’t wait for anyone’s help, but building “a wall” between all her friends bothers her much. So, there are parts that kind of fit, but it’s not exactly what the task looked for.

  • Honestly, lyrically, it reminds me of “Now I’m In It” without the chaotic energy. She’s depressed and sad and wants to get out.

  • Ummmmm I don’t understand the other judges here. I think this is actually really strong for the theme?? She takes us through her cycle of depression, recognizes that she is at her lowest and seems to want to get out.

  • yeah, she acknowledges that she is sad but she wants all her problems to fix by itself while she shouldve found a way to deal with it and be happy again.

 

Touch It - Cynthia Erivo - Anything Worth Holding On To

• prézli - 7.5
  • In the song, she’s hopeless, however she sees some brightness in the future, but she’s unsure about tomorrow. She waits for “someone to help these days begin”, but she almost totally gave it up. She kind of contradicts herself and everything is confusing.

  • The song aside, she can sing her ****ing face off, point blank. I went through a good 30 minutes literally yesterday watching videos of her sing. Anyways, the song itself was solid, kinda sad, but solid. There’s definitely areas of depression, but it misses slightly on wanting help. It just needed to be more direct there.

  • She takes us through the throes of depression really well and expresses a desire to come out of it… There are some light references to wanting someone to help her out of it, but it doesn’t hit the nail on the head as much as it could.

  • Everyone wanted this song lol. It really alternates well between her feeling depressed and asking for help.

  • ok this is PERFECT. shes depress and she needs help. OMG 10 10 10. my wig!

 

 

Overprotected - FKA Twigs - Daybed

  • Honestly, this song was hard to understand, god knows I tried. So daybed means lying in the bed doing nothing which refers to depression. In the second verse, I can see she reaches out to friends and family to help her. So I guess it fits the task overall…?

  • “Faux my cunnilingus” - a lyric I never imagined listening to. She kinda just describes the depression, but lyrically, there’s no progression and the depression feels sustained.
• Element - 7.5
  • The lyrics of this are SO interesting and I think they do a wonderful job of setting the scene and helping us understand her depression. There really is not much about her trying to get out of her bed though… unless “baby are my footsteps” could be interpreted as her trying to start moving forward towards the end. SIDE NOTE: I was curious and looked at the other songs you tried to submit… I don’t think they would have scored higher than this honestly. In fact, they might have been lower.

  • lmao why did i think this is about masturbation? i guess depressed masturbation is a thing. anyway, yeah she is clearly depressed in this song. but its just that she only describes the feeling that she felt while being depressed. i just wish it mentioned about asking for help. love her and mary magdalene tho.

  • Yup! He knows he’s depressed and also knows “something ain’t right” and “is trying to fight”.

  • This is so damn dark. I probably should’ve figured we’d get dark, but damn, dude, dark. Great job!

  • Excellent choice! This takes us through his experience of depression in a very detailed way and shows us that he is still willing to fight but doesn’t know how to get out of it.

  • ouch this hurts. while he mentions about how he is trying to fight, there is a line that feels like he is giving up (if i never wake up, then maybe i’ll be alright). it kinda prevents me from giving this a 10. but you did well grandpa guero.

 

Krazii - Linkin Park - Heavy (feat. Kiiara)

  • It’s depressive, I kind of feel the heaviness as the title suggests. It starts off great, but as the song goes forward, I wait for them to call for help that never comes. I wish Head Above Water and Heavy were mixed up because the two together would have been perfect. You get .5 points more because this entry is sonically brilliant.

  • This song makes me feel so sad for Chester. Honestly, this song was such a cry for help that no one truly, truly realized it. That being said, I don’t think the song quite hits the mark about trying to save yourself. Ugh, damn this round is depressing.

  • IDK about this one. There’s definitely elements of depression throughout the song but I also feel like you could interpret it in a few other ways. It’s not a bad choice by any means as he shows that he wants to get out from it all.

  • Who’s this Ollie and who started to stan for him first? You or Guero? In the song, he reveals his depression and wants to go back to the normal mental state at the same time. The only part I’m missing is the will to live (e.g. “Put on a fake smile but inside my body is cut"). A good entry, though.

  • Damn, Ollie needs to go to some therapy. It’s good, but I agree with prezli here that it’s just missing the mark when it comes to wanting to change and get better.

  • Is this an Olliance??? Another strong descriptive of depression and fighting with your mind, but I don’t see much about wanting to change beyond “I wish I could” which seems like a faint desire.
