Alex Posted December 7, 2019 Author Posted December 7, 2019 20. Mabel - High Expectations Favorites: Stckhlm Syndrome, Mad Love, Not Sayin' Quote Unlike the album title, this album let down many listeners for this album being the equivalent to being lost in a spotify fodder playlist (the Ivy To Roses bonus track being present didn't help this comparison). The most creative / future potential songs being interludes didn't help Mabel at all. However she did provide us some basic bops and we can be appreciative for songs like Don't Call Me Up , Put Your Name On It and Mad Love while slowing it down for an important message on OK (Anxiety Anthem). Unfortunately the album still falls flat in some aspects and the era was dead on arrival. I hope she comes harder and serves creativity and individuality next era because just like her #198 US peak, she's hanging on for dear life musically. 19. Summer Walker - Over It Favorites: Playing Games, I'll Kill You, Come Thru Quote Summer Walker has surprised me with her breakthrough, after Drake hopped on the Girls Need Love Remix she seemed to propel into the mainstream media. Unfortunately her stage performances that have been going viral recently have turned me a bit off she still gave one of the better R&B albums from a newcomer (compared to Ella Mai). Having said that, Over It feels very lengthy and samey, this being caused by London On The Track producing the entire 18-track long album. Although there are a few standouts from the rest of the album, Over it could have easily been cut into a 13 track album without the Bryson Tiller version of Playing Games and more. I can see her going a long way if she expands her music more, I just hope she doesn't stick to the same trap-R&B genre she is in now. 18. Sabrina Carpenter - Singular Act II Favorites: Exhale, In My Bed, I'm Fakin Quote Coming off of her best work to date (Act 1), Singular Act II is the second half of the Singular series and it didn't disappoint. We can clearly see Sabrina maturing here and exiting the Disney style type of music. Although not yet cussing, the tracks proved themselves a distinct departure from her first 2 albums. Songs like the delicate Exhale and groovy In My Bed really show her potential in becoming a massive star and her excellent songwriting. Saweetie being the only feature on the album really brought the moody I Can't Stop Me down with her excessive adlibs however Sabrina still prevails in the end showing that this is just the beginning of what's to come. I truly hope she can separate with Hollywood Records and level with a record label that can fully promote her as that is the only thing she needs left. 17. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Favorites: you should see me in a crown, when the party's over, listen before i go Quote Billie Eilish has given us her debut album and... it's not as good as Don't Smile At Me. Half of this album has become unlistenable for me as they have just aged horribly. Songs like 8, all the good girls go to hell and xanny just drag on and get tiring. Fortunately for miss Eilish, the other half is excellent and truly shows growth to her discography, see; when the party's over, bury a friend, i love you, listen before i go. There are definite highs and lows to this album and she has me split on which overtakes which side. This album also depends on what mood you're in to enjoy it. I will say everything i wanted is the direction i want her to go in. 16. Brooke Candy - Sexorcism Favorites: C*m, XXXTC, FMU Quote Brooke Candy has finally released her anticipated debut album this year and this sexual-fun and free album is not meant to be taken seriously. Brooke has clearly established herself and her material as the hyperly-sexual and carefree songs you dance to, so don't expect a song to sob to. The only major problem I had with this album is the excessive amount of features (only 2 solo songs on the project). Although some features elevated the songs to another level (Charli XCX on XXXTC and Rico Nasty on FMU) most of the features seemed like fillers and weren't needed. A few examples of this would be La Goony Chonga on Encore, Erika Jayne on Drip and Bree Runway on Swing. The only two songs that I deleted were R.I.P. and Rim as both songs were horrid and the features lowered the song even more. I hope we get to see more solo material from Brooke soon because I can get behind this direction she's going in. 15. Kim Petras - Clarity Favorites: Sweet Spot, Broken, Blow It All Quote Kim Petras' first full length project, while having an unorthodox release strategy, is still trap-pop perfection. I can see Ariana singing most of this project and it's no wonder Kim was eventually featured in the Charlie's Angels soundtrack because it was only a matter of time before these two artists would be mentioned in the same sentence. Kim experiments with trap-pop (All I Do Is Cry, Broken), her pure pop she is well known for (Personal Hell) and even disco elements (Sweet Spot) on this album and it is all enjoyable for me. While my least favorite on the album is the closer, this album doesn't truly have any "bad" songs, just "Kim Malone" songs as the stans refer to them that are inferior to her pure pop material from Era 1. Although I agree that this might not be as good as her Era 1 songs, this project is unnecessarily overseen by many. 14. Hannah Diamond - Reflections Favorites: Love Goes On, Concrete Angel, Fade Away Quote Even though I can fume all day about how long it took for this album to come out, how her single covers are all superior to the album cover and the amount of new songs we got (only 3) Hannah Diamond still released an excellent debut album. The only complaints I do have are not song related but rather all about the release. These include the exclusion of the Danny L Harle joint "Part of Me" and the many years it took from the first single to the album release. Nonetheless, Hannah cements her place as one of the pioneers for PC Music with this project and truly shows what she wanted her fans to hear. 13. Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated Favorites: Real Love, No Drug Like Me, Julien Quote This era may have been a major fad, however Carly has served maturity and has easily moved into a more mature sound. Although this isn't the disco record many fans were thirsting for, there are still many gems included on this album and personally this whole era has been disrespected. Career highlights like Party For One and Real Love are easily weaved out as highlights as well as the perfected pop classic Now That I Found You. 12. Banks - III Favorites: Contaminated, Godless, If We Were Made of Water Quote III was not as instant or good as previous project The Altar, which I consider to be her magnum opus record, but she still remains face and doesn't lose what makes her BANKS. The production may not be as good as past projects but there are still excellent songs such as Gimme and Contaminated. This era is also very underrated as the era was passed over quickly and only produced two singles. 11. Lizzo - Cuz I Love You Favorites: Soulmate, Tempo, Juice Quote Arguably one of the most controversial artists of this year (or at least hated on for sure), Lizzo broke through this year with Truth Hurts and Good As Hell, both songs that weren't originally on this album but later added on to her 3rd (not debut) album Cuz I Love You. Admittedly, I actually didn't like this album when it was released but eventually it did grow on me and I appreciate most of the songs on the album. Absolute bangers like Juice and Tempo (which deserved the spotlight stolen from TH and GAH) should've been spammed on radios worldwide, truly some of her best songs. The features on this album don't overstay their welcome and serve their purpose well. Lingerie is also a perfect album closer and a good note to end on after the jam packed frivolous bops Lizzo gave us. Let's hope she can escape her past hits soon and move onto new music. 10. Emotional Oranges - The Juice: Volume II Favorites: West Coast Love, Sundays Quote I have enjoyed Emotional Oranges' music for a couple months now due to the perfect comparison and chemistry between their voices on each track. It's easy to say they sound incredibly good together. Although doubtful this R&B duo would be able to top their best song (Personal which is included on Volume I), they successfully have improved even more on Volume 2 of The Juice. West Coast Love goes straight to the top of my list for favorite track while this project easily becomes one of my favorite R&B releases this year. 9. Doja Cat - Hot Pink Favorites: Rules, Streets, Juicy Quote Doja Cat's Hot Pink is the second studio album from her and while many could say this album lacks cohesion compared to Amala, as Doja says best "There's something for everybody on this album". Although not everything is for everyone (as Won't Bite has been deleted) this album is packed full with excellent songs. Rules which has snuck into my top 10 songs this year and this song is a great example of how excellent Doja truly is. Streets is a great song that shows her singing and rapping abilities (along with rest of the album which displays this concept well). Doja might not have been thinking about the cohesion of this album as much as her first but the songs themselves truly show major growth and is on par with many rappers right now. Even is she truly does hate the f*gs, she does have undeniable talent. 8. Tove Lo - Sunshine Kitty Favorites: Glad He's Gone, Are U Gonna Tell Her?, Really Don't Like U Quote Sunshine Kitty may not have been as great as Blue Lips but it truly does stand out from her other projects (favorably or not) and shows that she can have a distinct change in her music while still being pop. Glad He's Gone is one of the best songs / videos of the year and deserved to smash. Jacques is definitely the worst song on this project and sticks out while the rest of the tracks are in the same vein of music. The features are nice but apart from Kylie they could've easily been removed. 7. Olivia O'Brien - Was It Even Real? Favorites: purpleworld, I Don't Exist, Call Me!!! Quote I LOVE this cover art so much, such a serve. The best part about this album are undeniably the lyrics. The lyrics on these songs truly make this one of my favourite albums of the year because of the relatability factor. We've all been in one situation or felt like that in at least one of these songs and she captures that perfectly. Olivia is criminally underrated because she could do so much with more budget! I hope I can see her grow because I love her discography so much. 6. Kim Petras - Turn Off The Light Favorites: There Will Be Blood, Turn Off The Light, Tell Me It's a Nightmare Quote Kim Petras delivered the complete edition of Turn Off The Light just months after Clarity and this truly has some of her best work yet. Promoted as a Halloween album, this is more than that, it's dark pop excellence that can be listened to all year. So many career highlights on here such as There Will Be Blood which is just wow. Her vocals truly shine on some of these tracks. The instrumentals between each songs are borderline unnecessary or should've been worked into full vocal tracks, either way I was greatly impressed with this project. 5. Ariana Grande - thank u, next Favorites: ghostin, in my head, break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored Quote Truly her smash era, Ariana proved herself to be a Main Pop Girl and even though Sweetener may have aged better than this, there are undeniable classics on this album such as the title track and 7 rings. ghostin' and in my head being her most personal and emotional songs yet truly set the tone as well as her moving on stage. She truly deserves a break after this enormous era. Also this was a great album to see live! 4. Charli XCX - Charli Favorites: Next Level Charli, Gone, Cross You Out Quote Charli has finally released her third album after the infamous leak of XCX World and her two critically acclaimed "mixtapes" Charli is seen as a downgrade from Pop 2, however it doesn't exclude her greatness as an artist. Charli's first 3 tracks are back to back classics from the anthemic Next Level Charli to the Christine and the Queens duet Gone to the Sky Ferreira assisted Cross You Out, Charli sets the tone immediately for what this album should've been. Unfortunately we do stumble across some weaker songs such as the out-of-place 1999, the emotional autotune heavy Thoughts and the cheap version of Track 10, Blame It On Your Love. However eventually the album gets back on track towards the end and ending with the futuristic 2099 which is one of the better tracks. I still think this is a great effort even after Pop 2 and just because it might now be as strong as P2, it shouldn't be disregarded. 3. Lana Del Rey - Norman F**king Rockwell! Favorites: Norman f**king Rockwell!, f**k it I love you, How to Disappear Quote Lana is finally back on track with NFR! and we love to see it. This era might have been messy but the end result was truly worth it. An excellent album from start to finish and the only sub-par song to me is California. The lyrics are beautiful, the production is classic and her voice is beautiful throughout the album. Truly her "we love her again!" era. 2. FKA twigs - MAGDALENE Favorites: home with you, fallen alien, mirrored heart Quote FKA twigs finally returned this year with Magdalene and this album is anything BUT a disappointment. FKA shows growth and emotion with this album and it truly has 0 errors. From the beautifully sung home with you to the mellow sad day to the experimental trap bop holy terrain to the heartbreaking mirrored heart and cellophane, this album gives you everything you need. Although thousand eyes and daybed may take a while to end, this album truly is an experience that you're lucky to be a part of. FKA just proves the point with Magdalene that she truly is a visionary and this album will be timeless. 1. Tinashe - Songs For You Favorites: Life's Too Short, Know Better, Save Room For Us Quote Tinashe has returned with her first independent, full creatively controlled Songs For You and this is arguably her best project. This album just doesn't age and has great songs throughout the album. What I truly enjoy about this album and what makes it the best album of 2019 is her melodies and harmonies. Her lyrics and vocals are amazing but her melodies/harmonies are what sets her apart from everyone else. The way she can make things work for her that wouldn't work for another artist is truly incredible. Songs For You is filled with excellent songs such as The career highlight Life's Too Short, the groovy Save Room For Us and Die a Little Bit, the empowering Link Up, the devastating Know Better and much more. Tinashe gives something for everyone and shows us all who she is and what she can deliver. This project dedicated for her fans is what she needed to start fresh, Tinashe is READY for the industry, charts are farts according to her so we don't need to expect anymore sellout-Tinashe, from her on out we have some of the best R&B material and the best album of the year.
