Grimes been kinda serving lately and Gone easily one of the better songs off Charli album, maybe even her entire career

Posted

Parachute is cute but in my Pang bottom 3, that one has just never grabbed me.

Gone :jamming: For some reason I wasn't really a fan on my 1st listen? Glad that changed.

Posted

i love you was one of the cuter tracks from Billie

Crossing, Virile, Fixture Picture, Homo to You, Stupid Fish, On the Wall, hiadtfawlmth-bihi, Movies, In Your Head, Without a Blush, Free, Gone all talent

surprised that you picked Accident out of all songs from TPOL but I can't say I'm mad

Parachute really?

I will not accept the SHIFTTE shade here.  It's a gorgeous ethereal song that takes you to another dimension.

Gone is a bop but I find myself confused as to why people think it's one of the best.  It's pretty much just a late 2010s Charli song by the numbers (so, very good still).

Gone is prob my fave of this update. TRULY an anti-anxiety bop and two talented queens on one song, I have to stan. Parchute is also TALENT of course. As is this Jenny pick!

Grimes, a cute girl (kiiii). And Sasami I found boring but Free is a standout from that album, for sure!

Downhill... I don't know a better song, I adore it the same way I adore Cruel World.
Movies :clap3:
So Heavy and Gone - career highlights from both :clap3:

Cruel World is far superior but DL is a serve too, can she serve Masochism in the 2020s tho?

and tea :clap3:

I think I only knew Stay With Me from Hatchie (which is superior ) but Without a Blush is actually really cute too :jamming:

I don't use In Your Head but Heavyweight Champion of the Year slaps :-* and Bags was a cute Now, Now ripoff :flower:

So Heavy is amazing, as is the rest of the album :jonny4: Parachute is so good that it's #7 on the tracklist AND the closer :smitten:

Gone is a bop, don't like Christine on it tho :gaycat4: Downhill Lullaby was cute for a week :fan:

hmmm I like SWM but WAB just has that something that a lot of Keepsake songs lack...

Heavyweight Champion :jonny5:top 50 of the decade fo sure

So Heavy sets the mood for MA very well but the rest of the album... she's a cute girl I guess

The Insomnia shade.. both are ambient classics

Parachute :clap3:

Yup.. Gone, Silver Cross & 2099 all made points.. shame the rest of the album was a bit of a misstep

far weaker songs on Pang imo (New Normal, Look at Me Now, Hey Big Eyes just to name a few)

and yes Gone has aged like fine wine :heart2:

oh 100%, many tracks on WWAFAWDWG were tryhard messes

whew the acclaim :jonny: finally some Cherry Glazerr and Chromatics love

I could easily have picked High Alice as well but Accident just has something a lil more... maybe the concept grasps me more?

Yes, Parachute. Really!

and finally some So Heavy love :heart2: not all girls can write, produce and engineer an ethereal wave masterpiece, not everybody has that... also I'm lowkey surprised you don't like Parachute but like So Heavy? They're very similar in tone IMO

U.F.O.F. offered some of Big Thief's greatest songs to date (Contact, Orange, Betsy) but nothing quite compares to this incredible song. I feel this incredible mixture of nostalgia for a time that never was and the joy of open fields, free to spend the rest of my days running and crying through them.

UOLlBEM.png

I was both ready and not ready for the return of Angel Olsen this year. I was desperate for new music, but I never expected this Kate Bush/Twin Peaks inspired dramatic monster of a song. The incredible strings, the tortured lyrics, the emotive performance... one of the most fascinating musical chameleon's of our times.

DlL47R3.png

I never expected to like Orville Peck, and I still don't think his album was that great, but Turn to Hate is one of the most unique and fascinating songs I've heard in recent memory. The mournful deep voice, enigmatic persona and study-worthy lyrics just shine through on undoubtedly one of the best songs of 2019. The reverb drenched outro is a particular favourite part. Yeehaw.

a8ieXYE.png

Another artist who didn't do what I expected, but did what I needed. Cellophane establishes FKA twigs as one of the most diverse artists in 21st century music. You did it for me Talia.

U5HUwjs.png

Makes me reminisce about all the drunken teenage nights out and the loss of innocence from that period. Van Etten sings like no other and Seventeen is the highlight of the incredible Remind Me Tomorrow.

jrW3QRo.png

Just when I thought Big Thief had release their best song of 2019, they dropped the f*cking rawest, most pure, animal-like song I have ever heard. Adrianne's vocal performance and shredding earns her a place in musical history as one of the greatest performers and lyricists of this century. Impeccable.

Khak4Di.png

Another song that dopes me up on nostalgia, especially when Alex's mysterious lyrics and the bizarre concept behind this song - Gretel going back to the witches house after Hansel is eaten to eat the candy. Something about the opening line - "It's calling me back, house of sugar, did they bury me here?" has stuck with me all year and my brain refuses to let it go. An incredible artist and a poet for our times.

oXBhfni.png

"All Lana Del Rey sings about is being sad and smoking and sugar daddies!". First of all, **** yourself. Secondly, Lana has proved over this past decade that she is committed to her art so hard that she would die for it, and "The greatest" proves this to an incredible extent. Lana is pondering her favourite memories before watching a nuclear apocalypse wipe out cities via Instagram Live. She's "missing doing nothing the most of all" as she realises that the fragility of the human ego will bring about the end times. But at least we had a ball!

vpIrwZP.png

I've never heard longing as much as I have on Andromeda. Weyes Blood is searching for the last glimmer of hope - and she's really ****ing struggling. What results is four minutes and forty seconds of trying to find some sort of meaning whilst reflecting on her own inhibitions. She's talking to herself when she says "I dare you to try" and I'm so happy she did.

YJjbTeM.png

As Angel herself has said, Lark is not a song, it's a play. It's more dramatic and enchanting than any theatre piece written and performed in the past decade. From the swooping strings, the hair raising drums or Angel's desperate voice, Lark is almost 7 minutes of an artist showing us their absolute purest form of expression. There's no real structure to the song, it picks up then slows down, then picks up again and crashes and burns out, to the point where you can almost hear the flicker of the flames from the troubled relationship the song is about. The lyrics read like a poem, each line revealing another devastating realisation about the crossroads Angel's relationship has come to and the pure misery that the inevitable break up is going to bring - "What about old times? We can't erase the,".

Whilst Angel has already had career highlights like "White Fire" and "Sister" that showcase her introspective lyrics and ambitious production, "Lark" takes us to another level and emotion has never come through so clearly in music. "What about my dreams? What about the heart?" Angel asks, seemingly to her partner, but also to herself. It's a question a lot of us could ask ourselves more.

so I decided I hated my previous graphics so I tried to do knock offs of NMEs 2019 albums list instead and they still look kind of horrible....

anyway, here's albums #30-21 :flower:

AZYjCPn.png

Very patchy album overall but includes some of her all time best (Gone, Silver Cross, 2099) but some tracks are horrible (Blame It On Lizzo, White Mercedes, Official). A for effort Charlotte.

9nHTs6I.png

Kind of corny and not as good as Guppy but still a pretty great album with some different soundscapes and an overall poppier feeling than their debut.

keL8ugp.png

Ms Paul coming through with her second album less than a year since her debut... and we like it. She uses very interesting chord progressions and there are some great guitar moments.

dQxRstw.png

Another body of work that overall lacks something Oshin and Is the Is Are had but I still enjoy, especially tracks like Horsehead, Skin Game and Taker. A bit heavier than their last two albums and I miss the hazy shoegaze vibes sometimes.

fvJDcNd.png

Never heard of them before this year but I dig this album so much. The moody, grunge like sound that drowns out the vocals really appeals to me. Need to get into their discography.

llOs2LO.png

An album that I remembered liking when it first came out but never really returned to until later in the year then regretted I hadn't spent much time with it... her vocals are interesting and the chamber pop influences come through here. I think her best is yet to come though.

mXdTBT2.png

Emily finally put down the modular synth and picked up a guitar, although alone this time. A very cute if simple acoustic album where her songwriting and fingerpicking shines through.

Y0nAATB.png

Natasha comes through with an album vastly superior to 2016s The Bride. The vampire, Lord of the Flies concept or whatever is hard to decipher but the album has some great songs and remains pretty consistent throughout.

dFAOLd0.png

Another album that I binged on a lot in early 2019 but didn't serve longevity, but I still think it's a great album with some of their best ever songs (Ohio, Daddi, Stupid Fish) and I like the overall angry yet silly vibe.

A5vFkWe.png

So this isn't Dear Tommy but at least it's something! Again, Chromatics best songs are always their covers which is sort of worrying but this is another really consistent release from them and the synths sound soooo good on some songs. Feels like a tight little package of everything Chromatics have conquered in their career thus far.

Posted

Yeah Charli (album) is definitely a bit messy, but luckily it includes some album & discography highlights so it's not a complete waste of time or anything. I actually have an entirely different bottom 3 :gaycat3:

Quote

Not album highlights?! please tell me what are...

TR~ A Lot's Gonna Change, Everyday, Picture Me Better | NFR~ NFR, MAC, Love song :lakitu:

Posted

The graphics for the album are v cute :-*

Songs: The Greatest + Andromeda :jonny5:I tried to give Angel Olsen a try but kinda stopped on the 4th song, guess I'll give her another shot

Charli is a cute album, you def made points about White Mercedes  though I had no choice but to bop to it during her concert
