Juice is a bop, deserves to be highest out of her entries tbh :eli:

Can We Pretend is okay, but Walk Me Home is definitely better, neither was as good as I hoped though.

MLD's Best of 2019

40 - 31

40. 5 Seconds of Summer - Easier

5SOS starts off our Top 40 with a song that could have done better. The song is catchy enough, but I'm guessing Charlie Puth failed here with production once again because the song can be a bit of a headache to listen to after awhile. Hopefully in 2020 we'll get something great again among the lines of Youngblood or Jet Black Heart

39. Lizzo - Truth Hurts

Lizzo's second entry on the list. This particular song took awhile to get on my good side as I wasn't initially impressed with it. Production wise it seemed less exciting than Juice. But regardless, it grew on me and Lizzo's personality slays here just as much as on Juice.

38. Kelly Clarkson - Broken & Beautiful

Marshmello working with Kelly Clarkson seemed to really be a match in a way. Marshmello's magic with production plus Kelly's magic with her voice for this  movie worked very well. But it does have a decent burn rate so after awhile I got tired of it. As far as the decade is concerned, Catch My Breath is probably the one Kelly track that will probably stick the landing for me heading into the next decade, and since I know she won't be on my decade-end list, I'm saying it here.

37. Samantha Jade - Bounce

Samantha Jade has been a fixture for me this decade ever since I discovered her from X Factor Australia in 2012. I always look forward to new music from her. This song, if I'm gonna be honest, is a bit underwhelming. It's pretty basic and generic, but the music video is great and the song is catchy enough that it made a decent run on my countdown. But it's definitely one of her decade low-points.

36. Selena Gomez - Look At Her Now

This song is also pretty basic but very catchy. Although it's only here because Selena has enough presence to make the song memorable for me.

35. Iggy Azalea f. Alice Chater - Lola

Alice Chater makes some VERY bad music for all the hype she gets on here, so I wasn't exactly sure how her being a feature on an Iggy track would work. But her hook is actually very catchy and for once her personality is being utilized correctly. Iggy also served on the verses. The intro could have been deleted though as I feel the song drags a little too long with it.

34. Lizzo - Good As Hell

Lizzo's final appearance is with this. Another track that had to grow on me, Lizzo serves both rapping AND vocals here and the message is pretty crystal clear and inspiring. As we head into 2020, I hope Lizzo can get a brand new song to be a hit.

33. Taylor Swift f. Brendon Urie - ME!

Alright, so I'm one of the few people on here that doesn't hate this to pieces. It gets too much hate tbh. The song is still catchy as **** and Taylor knows how to make any production interesting along with Brendon being theatrical and fun as well. What I will say is that it definitely doesn't stand up to the rest of the album and that going forward I don't see this having much recurrent replay with me. Perhaps the first case of this since Miss Movin' On by Fifth Harmony (most of its plays, over 400, came from 2013 and has since been played only on rare occasions, eclipsed by better songs like Sledgehammer plus Camila's solo career)

32. Aurora - Animal

Having the same name as a Disney Princess is going to get my attention. And since I like checking out new music, I did so with Aurora. And I'm happy with what I got. The song is upbeat and adventerous and has all the excitement and magic that I could want from a darker pop song and it makes me more interested in checking out her work.

31. The Chainsmokers f. Bebe Rexha - Call You Mine

Bebe Rexha is the one female artist that I'd rather leave in the 2010's with her shrill voice just flat out ruining every song she is in (including her own). EDM tracks are the only exception 95% of the time. Her collab with Martin Garrix worked well for her and so her collab with The Chainsmokers wasn't bad either. In fact, it's on par with the Kelsea Ballerini collab almost. The song is still pretty basic but Bebe is listenable here and that final chorus with the increasing intensity of the guitars makes the ending more epic than this generic song deserved so it gave it more replay value. I hope The Chainsmokers can at least get one more Top 40 hit. The fact that they had three songs in a row chart between #50 and #60 is pretty crazy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BONUS (because I messed up)

- Twenty One Pilots - The Hype

- It took me awhile to really warm up to Twenty One Pilots after thoroughly annoying the hell out of me in 2016. I play SongPop 2 and this song came up in a lot of top hits playlists that I eventually listened to this and really liked it. By far their best single in my opinion. I can't guarantee I will like other songs by them at this point but this song was just right for me.

MLD's Best of 2019

30 - 21

30. Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down

Another Taylor entry leaves the list. This song was arguably a little catchier than ME! or at least had better lyrics. I always thought this song's production however was similar to Sucker Punch by Sigrid, which arguably is a better song. This song however was very addicting and it was powerful enough to go Top 30.

29. Camila Cabello - Shameless

Camila's final entry on the list is one of the more underrated singles of the year. The dark edgy pop with the guitar riff. Camila's raspy voice actually works against the minimal guitar riff and then the added production building as the song goes makes the song more intense than you would think. It's ashame the Havana rehashes keep holding her back from expanding creatively, because a single like this was great.

28. Yungblud & Halsey f. Travis Barker - 11 Minutes

Halsey was the main reason I checked the track out. Travis Barker providing the production really was a nice touch and both Halsey and Yungblud KILL their verses here. Everything about this was good as hell.

27. Marshmello f. CHVRCHES - Here With Me

Happier becoming Marshmello's magnum opus opened the door for other alternative acts to work with him it seems. CHVRCHES did a good job of continuing the momentum of quality singles that started with Wolves. Unfortunately, it was a little too clear that this was meant to be Happier 2.0, and instead it seemed that pop radio caught wind of this, plus the fall out between the band and Marshmello after because of the messy decision to work with Chris Brown and Tyga just made everything about this song get wasted. Lauren's vocals on the chorus plus the breakdown regardless.

26. Carly Rae Jepsen - Now That I Found You

The "official" lead single of Dedicated comes in just short of the Top 25. The song is cute and serves its purpose as a catchy lead single that still reflects Carly's quirky style as a pop indie darling in this stage of her career. It IS a little basic though since it doesn't really go anywhere so it gets a little lost in the shuffle compared to other songs on the album. Still great nonetheless.

25. Tritonal f. Rachel Platten - Little Bit of Love

Surprise bitch! That's right. Rachel ****ing Platten snuck her way into my year-end once again! You haters THOUGHT she'd be gone once Fight Song ended. Nope. NOPE. She gave us this EDM collab of a BOP this year and the song was very addictive for me this summer. I look forward to whatever Rachel has in store next.

24. The Veronicas - Think of Me

I'm glad these girls released again this year, especially after the fallout they had. This song reminds me a bit of both Aly & AJ's work this year but also Carly's a bit. The Veronicas are sassy but sad at the same time in this song, and they also give us the iconic line about giving head that I will never forget. Looking forward to a new album in 2020.

23. Aly & AJ - Star Maps

And speaking of Aly & AJ, they are finally making an appearance on the countdown. Their pop rock material was a nice soft spot to some of my hard early teen years (junior high was right when they were at their peak). I totally understand why they took as long of a break as they did. I honestly was lukewarm to their previous EP's music, but thankfully their latest EP had better material that clicked with me. This song being one of them. The song is very atmospheric and exploring. It's perfect to listen to late at night just like No Drug Like Me, except it's also perfect when you need a song in the background to listen to keep you sane in the middle of the day. The choruses however are also explosively great so when you're ready to be slayed, this song is ready to deliver that. Best part is that the best of Aly & AJ's 2019 material is yet to come.

22. Machine Gun Kelly f. Yungblud & Travis Barker - I Think I'm OKAY

In b4 people get on my case for putting a "****ty rapper" this high. Well, let's look at the facts. 11 Minutes was pure fire and having Travis Barker produce for Machine Gun Kelly really elevated the lyrics of this song, which I can actually relate to somewhat since I'm from the LA area myself. Mental health is a very scary thing to think of, especially for me since I spent a lot of time away from my hometown this year and my chances of moving back there are slim. LA can be full of fake and snobby people, all the way to the suburbs where I used to live. So I can totally feel MGK in the lyrics and while I don't use drugs, I understand Yungblud's feeling of wanting to let go - that's probably why I indulge myself in listening to music or watching Youtube videos. Anyways, this song is actually a career highlight for MGK to me and I recommend it.

21. Tiesto & Jonas Blue f. Rita Ora - Ritual

Just short of the Top 20, we have a hot DJ collaboration with Rita Ora. Rita's solo material usually is inferior to her DJ collaborations...mainly because the production actually benefits her better and they have different writers than whoever she has. The combination of Jonas Blue and Tiesto working together actually works because the instrumental explodes at the right moment and the verses have something that actually work with Rita's vocals that keep you interested the entire time. This was VERY close to being Top 20, but I have my reasons for why other songs made it in over it.

Bonus:

Zara Larsson - Ruin My Life

I didn't get into this song until this year, but I'm retroactively going to add it to 2018's best of list. While I don't think a toxic relationship is good to go back to, this song is very catchy and the instrumental is very VERY memorable. The bridge is my favorite part leading into that final chorus.

MLD's Best of 2019

20 - 11

20. Sabrina Carpenter - Exhale

A little sister to Breathin' by Ariana Grande. The messages of both songs pretty much complement each other but in this particular song, Sabrina says she wants to just exhale for a moment, so she specifically just wants to breathe because there is a lot of pressure going on around her. This song is very delicate and intimate. And relateable. This is probably her best song that doesn't involve DJs.

19. Lindsay Lohan - Xanax

I'm honestly very surprised Lindsay released anything this year, let alone a song that has a title like Xanax. The song goes off though. It's pretty much a combination of the club boom sound of the earlier in the decade mixed with some modern production. And it's super addictive. I wish Lindsay the best regardless of what she does.

18. Fletcher - Undrunk

Apparently this girl was part of an X Factor USA group from the first season and has since gone solo. This song managed to get radio traction and I got hooked on it as soon as I first heard it. It deserved better success honestly. It's funny though that even she has had more success than all three of the X Factor USA winners. Undrunk even outcharted Bea Miller, lol.

17. Jax Jones & Martin Solveig f. Madison Beer - All Day and Night

Congrats to Madison for getting her first European hit thanks to this collab. Her voice is suited well for EDM production and Jax working with Martin honestly meshes together well. Martin give Jax enough more of a punch to make the choruses more anthemic and Madison carries her own on the verses and the bridge. Everything about this collab was well done.

16. Marshmello f. A Day To Remember - Rescue Me

One of the most unexpected Marshmello collabs you could think of. An EDM collab with a metal band is very out there. But the combination of rock and EDM really got me hooked from the get go and this song actually really hits it out of the park. While it's not Marshmello's best collab (Happier rightfully has that thrown), this is definitely Top 5.

15. SeeB & Bastille - Grip

I wasn't expecting Bastille to slay me with another EDM collab so soon after Happier, but they ended up doing exactly that. SeeB's production is good and Bastille carries it here just like on Happier. It's a perfect follow-up collab to Happier for me and makes for a one-two punch.

14. Selena Gomez - Lose You To Love Me

I'll be honest. I was lukewarm to the song at first. But as the last two months have progressed, I've gotten more and more into it and I really love it. I can't believe Selena finally has a #1 under her belt, and I'm also so happy we will finally have a new album as a result of this.

13. Taylor Swift - Lover

I was lukewarm to this at first as well, maybe because it was August and I wasn't feeling a song like this at that time. But as summer progressed into fall, this grew on me more and more and I love it a lot now. By far the best single of the Lover era and this will stand the test of time as we get into the next decade.

12. Carly Rae Jepsen - Too Much

Carly's Delicate was served with this song. The song is catchy and Carly serves hot mess with the lyrics. It's just very addictive and one of the best Dedicated songs.

11. Ellie Goulding - Sixteen

The ONLY Ellie song this year that I liked (of the obvious hit bait). This song just got more addictive each time I listened to it, and it's the first solo Ellie song to go platinum on my Last FM since Lights. I need a new album though. It's been 5 years now.
