Yvess Posted October 11, 2019 Author Posted October 11, 2019 @Element's Critiques Round 1: Intro Hide contents Beyoncé - Duh. Instantly recognizable, catchy, and succinct. Bjork - Love the theatrics and dramatics here tbh. It sets the stage without being too long and cumbersome. Lady Gaga - Another pop classique. A very strong synth intro that gets you hooked in the song. Taylor - This is cute but quite unmemorable compared to the other entries Tinashe - It’s definitely a bit intriguing but also very jarring/feels off-key to me Madonna - It’s not that this is a bad intro, but I just think the three above are more concise and take full advantage of their short amount of time. This drags a bit tbh! Round 2: Verse Hide contents Beyoncé - very strong verse lyrically with powerful sonics too. It’s a great glimpse at this song. Bjork - WOW the lyrics to this verse are so chilling. With Bjork’s delivery, you sometimes don’t pay full attention to what she’s saying… but this whole song is truly an incredible and angst-ridden poem. Lady Gaga - We really don’t get pop music and the allure of ~celebrity~ like this anymore, do we, huh? It’s kind of sad. A very cohesive and catchy verse. Taylor - It’s simple and cute enough. I am really not blown away by the lyrics tho. Tinashe - I think that based on the production/melody/overall vibe, this is the verse that I am most entranced by. I wanted it to go even longer because it has a swag to it. Definitely wish there was a bit more lyrical substance here. Madonna - Lyrically, this was quite generic. I was expecting something a lot more powerful in both melody and storyline. Round 3: Bridge Hide contents Beyonce - I like how she played around with the softer, piano elements here. The lyrics are memorable enough. Bjork - I had to listen to more of the surrounding song for context. I think this definitely accomplishes the task of showing a change in instrumental/tempo, but it is a bit jarring at the same time. Taylor Swift - This is the Taylor content I was hoping for. Definitely your strongest round in this challenge so far. There is a building tension throughout the bridge and the lyrics are engaging/passionate. Lady Gaga - I liked the lyrics of this. Definitely unique and a good switch up from the rest of the song yet still seems to fit in well. Tinashe - This is stunning tbh. I love the subtle melodic change-up here and her voice is so crystal clear. Madonna - Is this rly the most powerful bridge in Madonna’s entire discography? It just feels very flat to me. Round 4: Chorus Hide contents Beyonce - WHO DOESN’T LOVE A KEY CHANGE Bjork - I think Bjork’s lack of a typical chorus in most of her songs can make her hard to connect to. This one definitely has some structure to it, and I like the instrumental, but when you compare it to so many pop classic choruses, it doesn’t measure up in the same way. Lady Gaga - An anthemic anthe Taylor Swift - You know what’s weird? This chorus actually doesn’t hold up as well as I expected it to, especially when we have such strong entries for this round. The production feels a bit shallow actually. I want MORE climax. I do still want to sing it as a guilty pleasure though. Tinashe - The production is v good here. The lyrics are a bit repetitive but it’s a well-crafted hook melodically. Madonna - I’ve always enjoyed this song. But Dress You Up deserved!! @Element @Sabbath @Speezy @Touch It @Overprotected @KatyCatPH @Invisibility @EriKills @Psycho

From the moment the first second kicks in, the anthemic vibe is present and it sets the mood for the rest of the song. It’s grand, it’s remembered, it’s iconic. Great choice. Overprotected - Very different vibe from Crazy in Love, but I like it. It feels very dramatic and like a moment. Psycho - I’ll never forget how everyone thought this was the intro we were gonna get at the Superbowl because it seemed so obvious, and that speaks for the strength of this particular part of the song. KatyCatPH - I think this is a good choice, it might not be as obvious as Crazy in Love or Poker face but it feels very dreamy and I like how the instruments work with each other to create this very specific atmosphere. EriKills - I like the vibe of this, it’s very ~moody but it feels a little lacklustre compared to the other entries. Invisibility - Iconic. Legendary. Yes Gawd. Werk It Mawma, etc. I love the build-up for this, every Element™ adds something to the intro and makes it great. Round 2: Verse Spoiler Touch It: I’ve never been a fan of the way this was recorded tbh. The instrumental is too loud and feels all over the place. I appreciate how energetic the beat is even if it’s not my fave thing to, it goes well with the theme. The lyrics for this verse aren’t all that tho. Overprotected: I like the beat, it’s interesting. The lyrics are too simplistic tho and it’s not really giving me a ~vibe of anything. Psycho: The production on this is godly. I think the lyrics are good and fit the theme and introduce what the song is about really well. KatyCatPH:I like how she talks about all those little moments, they’re such short “glimpses” into what the relationship was like yet they’re so easy to picture. The instrumentation is very soft and works with the lyrics. Erikills: Inch resting Invisibility: The beat is incredible, the lyrics are eh, the delivery is good. Round 3: Bridge Spoiler Touch It - The vocals are obviously incredible so you absolutely got that RIGHT. And I know she says she can just sing it with piano, but I wish the lyrics were longer, ‘cause there’s not much to discuss here. Overprotected - Inch resting Psycho - I think the lyrics are too Born This Way’d, in the sense that I can’t imagine anyone else singing this lyrics. My favorite part is probably the last, after the “won’t poke holes…” KatyCatPH - goodbye Erikills - Her vocals are so pretty in this, probably my favorite entry of yours this round so far tbh! This has a very beautiful feel. Invisibility - Short but great. I love the feeling in this. Round 4: Chorus Spoiler Touch It: oh look it’s me, how can i objectively judge this. This is one of my favorite songs of all time, it’s just so uplifting and fun and beautiful and talented. The only thing that “hurts” it is the repetitiveness but even then, it’s still uplifting and beautiful and talented, maybe love is REAL. Overprotected: I think the lyrics are interesting and I overall like this, but it doesn’t feel strong enough for a chorus Psycho: the rah rah bitch, yes, love that you went for the last chorus cause it’s explosive and infectious, she did what she had to do when she wrote those rahs KatyCatPH: I think this pretty much has everything a good chorus should have, it’s catchy, it’s different to the rest of the song, it’s distinctive. Erikills: I love her flow in this. However, it doesn’t feel like this “big moment” in the song. Invisibility: BICTH @Element @Sabbath @Speezy @Touch It @Overprotected @KatyCatPH @Invisibility @EriKills @Psycho

They reel you in and keep you locked for whats coming. Both Bey,Gaga and Bjork did that really well. Mado fell a bit flat[Holiday would’ve been better] Round 2: Verse Hide contents Verse: I do believe verses are supposed to be almost as good as the chorus and interesting both instrumentally and lyrically. Soul Glitch did this. Bjork the verse was really experimental and I couldn’t groove to it Round 3: Bridge Hide contents Bridge: For me these were based on climax and uniqueness. Beys & Taylors climactic belts for example. Tinashe’s was cute but it felt like some Disney Chanell commercial during the bridge Round 4: Chorus Hide contents Chorus: CATCHINESS! Something that’s catchy but doesn’t get forced on you. Gaga and Tinashe did this well. Bey L.O.T was honestly vocally good but really annoying and over repetitive chorus on which I felt like never ended @Element @Sabbath @Speezy @Touch It @Overprotected @KatyCatPH @Invisibility @EriKills @Psycho

The best bit here is the lyrics, Speezy - We love some diva-esque type of bridges! I like the belting ofc! Sabbath - This is cute, But it is not giving me the climax feels Chorus Element - YAS, ONE OF HER BEST SONGS PERIODT. The vocal prowess is so palpable! Speezy - JORDIN SNAPPED once again. I love how this song reminds me one of my fave JS songs which is Next To You Sabbath - I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. This is giving me my THG stan days flashbacks @Element @Sabbath @Speezy
Yvess Posted October 11, 2019 Author Posted October 11, 2019 MENTOR'S CUP CRITIQUES @Hikari Hikari - Round 1: Bridge Ellie - Idk it was just too somber for me, and with the title like “Explosions” I was expecting something grand Jordin - Call it predictable but that’s just how I like my bridge, a huge build up until that climax/final chorus comes Lorde - I mean it was steady the whole time, not bad but it could’ve been better Hikari - Round 2: Chorus Ellie - This is one of my fave songs by her so I’m probably biased here hihi Jordin - There was potential but it just didn’t pack enough punch for me to even go on the next lines of the song Lorde - Love the dramatics in the build-up, probably a lil bit too long but it still worked @Element @Sabbath @Speezy
