Yvess Posted June 1, 2019 Author Posted June 1, 2019 (edited) ROUND 5 FINAL CRITIQUES @Sabbath @Invisibility @Alena @Queen Conchita @Loyalty @Psycho Alena - Selena Gomez Spoiler Yvess: Alena - 8.5: I am shookT that they gave you this genre since I don't see her whispering skills enough to excel well in a rock form of genre. Good thing, your explanation made me appreciate that this song is inspired by the early 00s rock genre. The tiny bit that is lacking for me in this entry was it doesn't give me too much of an "anthemic" vibe that most rock songs exemplifies. Nevertheless, you still impressed me in this round. Element: Alena - 7.5 - Whew, this song is horrible. I’m glad I’ve never heard it before. For this genre, I feel that it’s a decent example if not a bit superficial. It doesn’t have the same hard hitting rock edge or natural energy of an Avril song… Selena is a bit like a kitten trying to seem larger than her actual size. Instrumentation is good. I wish the chorus was more explosive. Speezy: Alena - Selena Gomez – 7: First off lemme applaud Selena for snatching from Fefe Dobson, cause my fave did the same. Anyways this was a real Disney/Movie Soundtrack Pop/Rock Radio friendly track. The Vocals could’ve been more grainy/gritty to appeal to the rock spectrum. Pressure : Alena 10/10: Yes this song is amazing, I really miss pop rock selena, it really does give me that Kelly, avril sorta rock. It's also a great song that never gets old ♡ Invisibility - Madonna Spoiler Yvess: Invisibility - 10: After a mediocre performance last round, I am glad to see you getting up so quickly with a wonderful entry. Improv is one of the defining characteristic of Jazz and her live Oscars performance effortlessly showed that. Great job! Element: Invisibility - 10.0 - Ladies and gentlemen… I'm just going to state the obvious. We have a DOPPELGANGER in our midst. As an artist who respects creative integrity and intellectual property, I am disgusted at how much you have copied Marilyn Monroe, from the hair to the dress. Do you not have any value or respect for originality? You're a laughing stock. It's cheesy, it's disgusting. I personally found it absolutely artistically atrocious. I am embarrassed to be sitting here in your presence having to even dignify you with an answer of my opinion…. JK, this is absolutely fantastic. Madonna is embodying the genre in the performance with strong vocals and characterization. The ad libs and personality shown throughout are superb. You knocked it out of the park. Speezy: Invisibility – Madonna – 8.5: Very jazz like. I brought me back to the days when I was a sperm cell bopping to these tunes. The vocals were good and uncontrolled but the overall showtime feel was fantastic. Pressure : Invisibility - 8/10 oh wow I never knew Madonna did jazz before and slayed I actually prefer it over most jazz..I'm not a fan of the genre but I could see myself listening to this. Loyalty - Christina Aguilera Spoiler Yvess: Loyalty - 6: The song that could've peaked higher if Legend X didn't pay dust on it. The instrumentation is country, the feature is also country thanks to Blake. I just feel that the Blake Shelton feature brought the country more in this entry wherein we should be seeing your artist to be the one to do that more Element: Loyalty - 5.0 - Oh sis. This was rough. The country portion of this song is so minor. Christina probably couldn’t even spell KFC. There is not too much country in the instrumentation imo (it felt like your standard Xtina power ballad) and only Blake’s vocals bring the genre into the mix. I will have to score this based on how the artist brought the assigned genre to the table. Speezy: Loyalty - Christina Aguilera – 7: It does mash her pop side with his country side. I was expecting a full Carrie Underwood/Rascal Flats track but this straddles Florida Georgia Line or Thomass Rhett. Its not bad but I do hear more Pop and than other influences in this track. Pressure : Loyalty - 7/10 it didn't feel country till the guy came in. Christina has not got the voice for country music but half way it did make me wanna get my cowboy shoes on ;) Psycho - Lady Gaga Spoiler Yvess: Psycho - 8.5: Good choice! I find this song to be so techno-ish and your explanation truly helped. It's just that there were some parts where I only hear the verses with no beats, I get that it is the style of the song but it could've worked well on me if it isn't a long break from the beats. Appreciated your explanation btw! Element: Psycho - 8.0 - Are u really going to make me listen to a 10 minute track?? This was a pretty good look at the genre, but I felt there were a lot of times where it just kind of floated in this endless loop where I was hoping for some more beats/energy/etc. I really appreciate your explanation + justification of the BPM! Speezy: Psycho - Lady Gaga - 10: I don’t listen to techno but this was a bop. Um I wish it was shorter though. I do like the mixing of this track especially towards the ending. Pressure: Psycho - 7/10 it's sounds repeative and boring..which makes this a great techno beat. I love the way you described the difference between edm and techno too. Which gives you high points so well done. I understand it was hard to find a real track but you did good. Queen Conchita - Conchiita Wurst Spoiler Yvess: Queen Conchita - 7: It is a good song to listen to in a party but it won't make me feel that I am gonna dance the night away if I hear this song first, the vocals in this song is so good btw, makes me think that Conchita can do well if Rock was assigned to ha. Element: Queen Conchita - 7.5 - This is another decent entry that checks off some boxes, but doesn’t completely wow me. The EDM-influence is obvious if not enduring or impactful. Yvess’ description emphasizes “nightclubs, raves and festivals” and I just don’t see people bopping to this too much in those settings. They’d probably take a break to get drinks at this point. Speezy: Queen Conchita - Conchiita Wurst -5:The lyrics was not the tea and the vocals was probably the epitome of tragic and by the worst vocals from your team. The instrumental and mixing was nice and the flow of the track is a bop . It was EDM but whew sis…we need some autotune or some vocal lessons. Pressure: Queen Conchita - 9/10 yess like this. It reminds me of David Guetta / Calvin Harris kinda stuff which makes me enjoy it. High points from me for this. Id actually listen to this regularly xoxo Edited June 1, 2019 by Yvess

Yvess Posted June 1, 2019 Author Posted June 1, 2019 (edited) ROUND 5 FINAL CRITIQUES @EriKills @Guero @kiiwii @KatyCatPH @Solarie @thecptz@PoKiTaurus @Element EriKills - Tinashe Spoiler Yvess: EriKills - 9.5: A well deserved recognition to a techYES expert. The beat is very out of the world-ish and it has no concrete beat drop which is very TECHNO. I love how you educated us also about Techno. Slay a bit bro! Speezy: EriKills – Tinashe – 7: Choices were made when Tinashe got stuck with Techno and Ariana with R&B, the self-sabotage This isn’t bad tbh, but 2 On sounds like it clashes with the remix a little bit. It sounds like it could be on a Kingdom Hearts game [which is a compliment]. The ending of the track give me life tbh Sabbath: EriKills - Tinashe - 7.5: scRIHmin at you saying that you were working on a techyes remix only for it to actually be your entry lmao. I think it sounds a little too “bright” for a techno track and that it’s not “purely” techno as it borrows a lot of elements that are very poppy, house or electro, but considering this was one of the hardest genres, I won’t give you much **** for it. Pressure : Erikills 7/10 - I can see this playing at the techno clubs haha. Yeah this remix gives all the tech vibes so well done. Guero - Ariana Grande Spoiler Yvess: Guero - 9.5: Wow oh wow, she looks so beautiful in that video but that's not the main reason why you got this score from me, I just needed to recognize the Beauty. This song is a good choice for R&B too, I just wanted to hear more R&B Vibes from it. Speezy: Guero - Ariana Grande –6: Choices were made when Tinashe got stuck with Techno and Ariana with R&B, the self-sabotage. This is R&B yes indeed, but its not my cup of tea R&B, this straddles Trap and the track lacks the belts/climax that most R&B songs have. Even in R&B/TRAP songs like this one people at least try to attempt a belt or climax. I know Ari can sing but she came off vocally lazy and stuck in 1.5 keys in this track Sabbath: Guero - Ariana Grande - 8: I like this ‘modernised’ version of R&B, it’s very smooth and the elements that aren’t _as_ R&B don’t take from the song, which for this round is really good. I’m not too fond of the Lil Wayne feature as I don’t think his voice pairs that well with Ariana’s sultry vocals in this track. Pressure : Guero 10/10 I LOVE this track. I always felt the rnb fibes in it too. Ariana is shown to do a fair few genres. Even goth rock. Shes amazing and we can all see this genre bender queen KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift Spoiler Yvess: KatyCatPH - 10: Props for sending in a RED track. This song is very fitting for indie rock. It gives me the vibes from Indie Bands who got their songs featured on the end credits of "coming of age" flicks. Spezy: KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift - 10: Hats off to this being very good. I do love the guitar and the lyrics of the track. The vocals of the track were very steady and the instruments worked well with her voice. Sabbath: KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift - 8: Great pick! You can definitely pick up the “rock-ish” elements very easily. I think it’s a little too pop for Indie Rock but it works. Pressure : KatyCatPH 7.5/10! I actually forgot about this track. I'm happy to hear Taylor going indie rock. I feel she could do anything too. Still wanna see her do something heavier but yeah points are proved here so positive fibes from me. X kiiwii - Katy Perry Spoiler Yvess: kiiwii - 9: Such a bop! When the beat dropped, I just lost it. I love this remix! I hope judges gets to check its BPM and other elements to ensure that you get a great score. Speezy: kiiwii - Katy Perry – 8.5:This is a bop tbh and it worked well with 365. This remix really actually left everything special 365 had while adding its own flare. I love the bridge or the 1:50 mark Sabbath: kiiwii - Katy Perry - 6.5: hmmm this is too dance-y for Electro. One of the defining things of the genre is how it blends hip hop elements and I don’t really get that from this. Could’ve been worse. Pressure : kiiwii 6.5/10! Omg! Sorta saw this coming haha. But yeah way too many dance genres it's getting it hard to judge. I don't see this as electro. PokiTaurus - Mariah Carey Spoiler Yvess: PoKiTaurus - 9.5: If you ignored R&B for MiMi, I will hate you a lot. Great choice coz your pick was very R&B and it tackles what the usual theme of Rhythm and Blues tracks. Very good! Speezy: PoKiTaurus - Mariah Carey - 8.5: Okay this was the R&B I needed whew. The belts and melodies was amazing. It’s very bouncy and fun. I do wish her enunciation was a bit better. She got better R&B songs but thats another topic Sabbath: Pokitaurus - Mariah Carey - 8.5: how funny that you chose this song out of all Mariah songs ‘cause I’ve been thinking about it for days lol. Anyways, those 100 recordings were worth it ‘cause it’s a great song, I like the production on this, you can definitely tell that she was pursuing that more hip hop leaning sound but still maintaining the R&B roots. Pressure : PoKItarus 9/10 Mariah is also known for her rnb which didn't give much challenge but you picked an amazing track, the song that made her went off. Great choice and it's one of the rnb tracks today I enjoy. so at least you choose good. Solarie - Avril Lavigne Spoiler Yvess: Solarie - 10: Effortlessly perfect. You and Bawdee just know how to use to perfectly use your aces. Everything about this screams ROCK, the anthemic vibe you get from this song is infectious. It makes you stand your ground from some toxic people in your life. Speezy: Solarie - Avril Lavigne - 10:Okay go awf Avril. The Rock yells and the guitar breakdown. The lyrics even match the rock tone. Even though its dated I cant complain Sabbath: Solarie - Avril Lavigne - 8 : love the energy of the chorus, it is the type I definitely can picture popping up at a Rock station. My only “complaint” is that I wish the verses kept the same energy cause it made it feel less rock-ish. Still a good entry and I like the sound of her voice a lot in this song. Pressure Solarie 10/10 she's also known for being a rock princess but omg you sent in the perfect track ♡ I guess out of them all. Your only artist who can drop decent rock bops so in a way even those wasn't much challenge I'm glad you got the rock genre and fact you even released one of her best songs x not her rockist but it is her catchyist. Love itt xxx thecptz - Kacey Musgraves Spoiler Yvess: thecptz - 7: Stan KEANE! Her voice is so angelic and blended well with the instruments, she sounds even better during LIVE performances. This is a good choice especially when Kacey seems to be limited in the genre department. Speezy: thecptz - Kacey Musgraves - 4: Sis, Element, thecptz, I- ..Anyone Clock me if I’m wrong but this is not Indie Rock. I had to google Indie Rock and listen to other peoples music to see if I was correct and I was. Her vocals is nice and the band plays well but this is like an a capella or a good karaoke. I’d call this Blue Grass or even Jazz or even Pop before I’d label it Indie Rock. Sabbath: thecptz - Kacey Musgraves - 2: baby z Keane might be considered a rock band but covering them doesn’t make a song rock or indie rock or any type of rock just by association there’s nothing indie rock about this, her voice is so pretty tho Pressure thecptz 3/10 this is not indie rock at all but this a beautiful ballad. ,,, Edited June 1, 2019 by Yvess

Yvess Posted June 1, 2019 Author Posted June 1, 2019 ROUND 5 FINAL CRITIQUES @Bawdee @Boys @fiercE @PinkBox @Not Like The Movies @Pendulum @Touch It @Speezy Bawdee - Rihanna Spoiler Yvess: Bawdee - 10: vWhat can I say? You chose the perfect entry. This song is ICONIC esp for the modern EDM scene imo so this is a great choice, I just didn't expect you to use this gem so early! Element: Bawdee - 10.0 - Excellent choice, rooted in strong percussion and an unrelenting energy that would make anyone dance in any setting. Sabbath: Bawdee - Rihanna - 10: I love this song so much, it never fails to put me in a great mood. I feel like when you want to talk about EDM and pop girls, this is the first song that will always come to mind, not just because of the success or iconicness but because of how it allowed more EDM heavy artists to shine and become a thing. Pressure : Bawdee - 7/10 - I do love this track... It's not very edm i never really seen it as one but ill still give it points ♡ its such a bop Boys - Britney Spears Spoiler Yvess: Boys - 8: Good pick. Thank you for not using the remix version. Element: Boys: 8.5 - I haven’t heard this song in such a long time so I thank you for letting me BOP to it again. This definitely feels like a song that was designed as the pop genre at its core, and they then added electronic elements to it. The drop really elevates it though because you can absolutely see people dancing to this at the club. Sabbath: Boys - Britney Spears - 5: Ma’am this is a dance pop song, where is the EDM? I can reach and say I notice a few electro touches that that brings it closer to it being EDM but this is NOT an EDM song. Is it a bop? Yes, Would i keep dancing till the world ended if Britney told me to? Absolutely, Does this fit the challenge description? Not really Pressure: Boys- 6/10 - I love this song. But I never saw it as an edm track sadly. fiercE - Måns Zelmerlöw Spoiler Yvess: fiercE - 9: No doubt, this was your best performance so far in this tournament. I am shocked to see him do good in this genre when I just saw him do a musical number on R1. Element: fiercE: 7.5 - Not bad! The instrumentation was representative and I think he tried his best to convert his vocals from pop/dance into the rock atmosphere. With live performances, you have the opportunity to show off characterization of the genre to elevate your score. Did he fully embody the genre in his live performance? Not quite. I think it could have had a little more rock-oriented power to it. Sabbath: fiercE - Mans Zelmerlöw - 4: yeah, having a live band doesn’t make a song rock. This is a pop song. He has a good voice tho, but sadly that’s not what the challenge was asking for :( sorree Pressure -fiencE 7.5/10 not a bad cover. I like that he made it his own with a rocky beat to it. It gives me the black keys kinda fibes. Not Like The Movies - Janelle Monae Spoiler Yvess: Not Like The Movies - 10: I am in love with this choice, love that you had the other subgenres of R&B too. The selling point of this song is also its message - very R&B-ish! Kudos for your explanation too! Element: Not Like The Movies - 8.0 - First of all, I absolutely LOVE this song. I was immediately hooked on it when I first heard it on album release day. I’ve always felt as if the first 3+ minutes are more pop/funk/neo-disco followed by the harder hitting outro. I guess you’re arguing that is all part of R&B which makes it hard for me to assign a score to this. It’s really a brilliant pastiche of genres, but I don’t know if it’s the best choice if your goal is to represent one specifically. Sabbath: Not Like the Movies - Janelle Monae - 6.5: I get the funk vibes, and I get the dance vibes, and I get pop vibes, and I get rock vibes and I get a lot of VIBES going on in here but R&B wouldn’t be the first genre I think of when listening to this song. I mean it’s, there in this blender of genres only her can pull off but I don’t think it’s very notorious until the very end. A great song, not so much for this round. Pressure - Not Like The Movies 6.5/10 her voice is off putting in the chorus but yeah I do see and hear what you pointed out in your description. Im not very knowledge with rnb only heavier stuff. But i can see this being a good rnb track. Its hard bc rnb is called many things these days and you found it all in one track so well done. Pendulum - Grimes Spoiler Yvess: Pendulum - 7: Decent choice but could've been better if you gave Dubstep to Britney coz I see your artist doing well on other genres but of course we have to deal with what we have and I guess I like it but not loving it. Element: Pendulum - 6.5 - This is reasonable but it’s definitely a bit lacking. The dubstep components could have had much more punch, especially if this is supposed to be a look into what the genre is all about. Sabbath: Pendulum - Grimes - 7: I definitely pick up the dubstep elements in the drop, but it misses all the elements that make dubstep, well dubstep in the rest of the song, like the strong baseline and unexpected sounds. Like I said, the dubstep drop is there so points for that, it really saved your score. Pressure - Pendulum 4/10 I'm sure there is a better one then this...it sounded not good at all. I've heard a lot better dupsteps. PinkBox - Celine Dion Spoiler Yvess: PinkBox - 10: Celine is great in improvisation so this slayage is expected. Great choice once again! Element: PinkBox - 9.0 - Good work, and of course, a great vocal. She had some playful energy on stage, but when I compare this with the other jazz entry, it just doesn’t have the exact same level of characterization so your score is not as high. Sabbath: Pinkbox - Celine Dion - 8.5 : this was on my bday so points for that already. I mean what can be said that hasn’t been said about Celine’s voice? So versatile and good. The jazz is definitely there and I loved the little moment with her leg lmao. Pressure -Pinkbox 8/10 this is terrible but it is real classic jazz. I'm still giving you high points for the genre twist. She can do a lot of genres as I can tell. Living icon. Touch It - Beyonce Spoiler Yvess: Touch It - 9: A fit to R&B genre for sure. I just can't Beyoncé delivered this sound so early on her debut era. Element: Touch It - 8.5 - Another good entry from Bey, if not a bit forgettable vs. her previous rounds. This song fits my understanding of classic R&B (or maybe 2000s R&B vs. a more recent version). Sabbath: Touch It - Beyoncé - 9: great entry as always, you can easily tell this is R&B and her voice sounds flawless. Kinda wish you got Rock and sent Don’t Hurt Yourself for that -unexpected moment. Pressure - Touch It 4/10 this isn't iconic at all. I feel you has it too easy. Beyonce is known for doing a lot of rnb it's her main genre. I wish you had a different genre to work with. Because this is not showing the other genres she can do. Sorry sis. Why I said in thread glad nobody picked pop because that would be way too easy too. XOXO
