Trip :clap3: while her album was pretty disappointing, this track remains major jam :jonny:

50. BROCKHAMPTON, “BOOGIE”

Why is it important? Due to timing, this could not make my 2017 cut. If it weren’t for ‘Best Of’ I wouldn’t have paid attention to these guys. So, shootout to you guys! This celebratory anthem opened me up to listening the greatest trilogy in rap.

Key Lyric/Bit: The saxophone, the sirens, the zero ****s given.

VuN4JrF.png

49. Ariana Grande, “God is a woman”

Why is it important? Queen turns religion on its head with this Trap-Pop track. Arianna’s never sounded so ****.

What's it about? The Biblical proportions of her sex game and crushing the fragile male ego.

5lycTcU.png

48. Halsey, “Alone (feat. Big Sean & Stefflon Don)”

Why is it important? I never thought I would like a Halsey song. To me, she’s so faceless nd borrows too much from other artists that I can never get in. “Alone” did something for me. Made me go “Okay! I see you.” I think she exhibited a nice soulful tone, the samples nice and recognizable and she had two good features to reel me in.

What's it about? Famous people got struggles too.

gT7BYwm.png

47. Childish Gambino, “Summertime Magic”

Why is it important? It’s a crazy turnaround from his more dramatic first single. Simplicity is fine though, if it’s a quality bop like this.

Sounds like: If Ray J had a comeback.

fdD5I17.png

46. Bruno Mars, “Finesse (Remix) [feat. Cardi B]”

Why is it important? I work with kids and my students spent months working on a routine for this song. Somehow, I never got tired of listening to this. And having a Cardi B feature was a desperate but smart move that worked out for Bruno as his last era was coming to an end.

Sounds like: A lawsuit if New Edition didn’t have the opportunity to perform at every damn Black award show this year. We get it! /rant

45. Robyn, “Honey”

Sounds like: Body Talk-era Robyn.

Feels Like: Being penetrated…by laser beams.

EproaBy.png

44. Rosalía, “PIENSO EN TU MIRÁ - Cap.3: Celos”

Why is it important? It speaks volume if you can move me and I have no clue what the hell you’re saying. The latin pop-flamenco infusion, this silky ass vocal, the venerability, the violent imagery in the MV. I feel everything. She did what?

Feels like:

cr8FZ8C.png

43. Ella Mai, “Boo'd Up”

Why is it important? Ella’s heartfelt retro-R&B stylings secured her a place as R&B’s new sensation of 2018. “Boo’d Up” is soulful, infectious and incredibly earnest.

Key Lyric/Bit: The catchy mumbo jumbo (ba-do, boo'd up/Biddy-da-do, boo'd up) you could not escape.

twH5GSl.png

42. Amber Mark, “Love Me Right”

Why is it important? “Love Me Right” has a summer-ready feel and vocals so chocolate-rich that can carry and keep me engaged for 5 minutes.

Sounds like: She’s been doing this for a while.

qkkIZ1Y.png

41. KIDS SEE GHOSTS, “Reborn”

Key Lyric/Bit: “I was off the chain, I was often drained / I was off the meds, I was called insane / What a awesome thing, engulfed in shame”

What's it about? Rehabilitation, re commitment, reclaiming inner peace, the stigmatization of being mentally ill.

Lots of talent here. Glad to see the Finesse love - feel like that track's been a bit neglected since people prob equate it to 2017 due to the first-week-of-January release.

Points have been made.  Boogie is BHs best song.

Suspeised at all the reborn love.  Why not ghost town 2?

Finesse is so good tho, of course with Cardi on it, without her it's cute.

God Is Ari is a song, good thing miss Camila declined it, otherwise it would have been shat.

People also acting like it wasn't one of the hottest thing on Bruno's album once it was released. :michael: think some got sick of it at some point.

I think Ghost Town 2 may have a place for me during my tracks list, if I ever put it together already.

I'm open to seeing what Halsey is serving with "Without Me" but I truly don't understand her appeal and why she's lowkey slaying.

It was so unexpected too, top 5? Where was the love for R&B bops 5 years ago?

I am too, I just can't be petty and not include it. Went through ups and downs with it this year. Fortunately, I don't see Ella lasting lol. I'll give her the sophomore single and that's it.

40. Kamasi Washington, “Fists of Fury”

Why is it important? It’s a clear call to action packaged in some of the best jazz instrumentation I’ve heard in a while. Nearly ten minutes and it’s all worth it.

What's it about? Black liberation and empowerment.

rm3pI0t.png

39. Ariana Grande, “breathin’”

Why is it important? Before sweetener grew on me, this was my go-to. It obviously a big pop produced track but the openness of Ari is appreciated. I'm upset she didn't let this rock until "Thank You, Next" came.

What's it about? Anxiety and her mental health that was shaken by the Manchester bombings.

2VeWLfy.png

38. Kimbra, “Human”

Why is it important? New Zealand babe Kimbra was slept on in 2018. With “Human” she took on more of an electronic vibe, but also a darker side, taking a huge step away from her jazz roots. The song build-up, electric keys and vocal layers hit me each time.

What's it about? Highs and lows and being human.

t8ly6jX.png

37. Janelle Monáe, “Make Me Feel”

Feels like: The sexual energy of Prince.

Why is it important? This is the era of liberation for Janelle Monáe. She’s feeling herself and I’m happy for her. So different from her previous efforts, this this sexually charged, confident but still funk-heavy '80s R&B.

xTf7SiI.png

36. Anderson.Paak, “Bubblin”

Why is it important? Anderson.Paak casually reminds us that, in addition to being a world class musician, he can lay down hella bars; it’s one of his most radio-ready song that sounds tailor made for top-down highway excursions.

Feels like: The hype you get from listening to Black Rob’s “Whoa!”

35. Teyana Taylor, “Gonna Love Me”

Why is it important? Who would have thought this former Reality Tv teen star would go onto making some good ass R&B? After all that she's been through just to release an album too, finally she had her moment. This sounds so classic. She really ate this vocally, lyrically and with her delivery as well. And Kanye…BOY!

Feels Like:

Byz7s3p.png

34. A$AP Rocky, “Praise The Lord (Da Shine) (feat. Skepta)”

Why is it important? “Praise the Lord (Da Shine)” delivers a nostalgic yet fresh and fun approach thanks to English rapper Skepta's production and vocal contribution. The two rappers have such an easy rhyme scheme to follow throughout the track and impeccable production (that damn flute slaps). It’s fun, lowkey uplifting and humbling coming from the braggadocios A$AP.

Sounds like: DMX homage.

USHZZXA.png

33. Yves Tumor, “Licking An Orchid”

Why is it important? This is a trip-hop lullaby. Yves voice is so uncertain and the female guest appearance by James K makes the song even more chilling.

Key Lyric/Bit: The wounded guitar lines.

R4VZ1Ky.png

32. Mitski, “Nobody”

Why is it important? She kind of dragged St. Vincent with this slow sad disco track, huh? Mitski delivers an intoxicating anthem for the lonely. Does this song make you want to dance or cry? You can do both.

What's it about? The self-awareness that no one can save you from loneliness and that it’s actually okay to be alone.

RObd78u.png

31. SOPHIE, “Immaterial”

Key Lyric/Bit: "I could be anything I want / Immaterial boys, immaterial girls / Anyhow, anywhere, any place, anyone that I want / Im-ma-ma-material, immaterial"

Why is it important? With a bouncing, lush ass beat, Sophie champions the freedom of gender identification. It’s the sole pure pop moment on the album too.
