Maddox Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 TV: #5 - #1 5. Random Acts Of Flyness - HBO: Seriously is this what the Twin Peaks stans felt when The Return was airing cause whew watching this was truly a unique experience A daring surreal art project that is more anchored in a social reality. It’s a show that portrays a community that’s rarely represented on TV in search of identity, strength, and love. It deals with many current topics like racism and gender in such creative ways and the fact that it came from HBO and not a streaming service is an even bigger achievement. It’s not often when you see a show that plays by its own rules and doesn’t try and explain or pander to anyone. And unless you’re David Lynch, you’re not getting an opportunity like this. I hope the exposure of the show and its creator Terence Nance will inspire more networks to take risks and acquire more experimental projects from people of color, and I absolutely can’t wait for season 2! The best two segments were the toxic masculinity musical, and the white savior/Breaking Bad anti-hero video essay. 4. Patriot – Amazon Prime: Never had so much fun seeing people continuously failing at their job since the early seasons of Silicon Valley/Veep. This glorious dark comedy about a group of people who just can’t help but keep messing up their mission whether it’s bad luck or just their incompetence; and even when they try to fix their mistakes things only go downhill from there. It’s literally Barry but better! And for people who are acting amazed by Hader’s hopelessness, y’all just HAVE to check Michael Dorman’s performance. His character went to hell and back, was practically damaged physically and emotionally just to pursue his dad’s orders. And you can see it on his face/his heartbreaking folk songs. I loved this show soo much, and i hope it’ll get renewed. The acting’s great, the cinematography is top notch. There's nothing like it on TV rn. Watch It now. 3. One Day At A Time - Netflix: If I was ever given the opportunity to write a TV show it would probably be something similar to this. (Just not with a laugh track). I’m a sucker for working class stories dealing with simple issues that are also relatable in a sense. But what sets this one apart from shows like Roseanne is how progressive it is. There is something for everyone: impeccable acting, heart-warming moments, real queer representation, tear-jerking drama, a respected EGOT legend, eye candy and more. The highlight of the season for me was witnessing the complete timeline of someone struggling with depression in under 30 minutes which felt so real. UGH Justina Machado She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. Hyped for S3! (TIE) 2. The Good Fight – CBS All Access / Full Frontal with Samantha Bee – TBS: Media/pop culture not knowing how to deal with the Trump administration is not exactly big news. From “trying to understand his base” to attacking his hair. Everyone is battling for those buzzed about hot takes or a twitter mention from the man himself. People like Jimmy Kimmel were hailed “Heroes of the resistance” while shows like SNL or The Handmaid’s Tale are now considered the standard of echoing the reality of living under his presidency which is really just tiring + embarrassing. I honestly don’t know how anyone would deal with a dude who puts out the most outrageous comments on the regular and yet no one seems to care, but I believe that shows like The Good Fight/Sam Bee are a good start! TGF this season did not back down; from mocking the absurdity of the current american politics, to dedicating an almost Scandal like episode to the president’s pee tape. It has that edge that many other shows were trying hard to achieve. But wait! The show is not all about Trump, it delves into other topics like the sexual harassment cases, feminism, immigration, fake news etc… and yet when you watch all of it you don’t have that feeling of cringe. All thanks to Christine Baranski’s performance who is just wonderful! Watching her trying to make sense of the world around her was amazing. And if there was any justice in the world, she would’ve won all the awards! As for Full Frontal, perhaps the most memorable moment about it this season was the ‘feckless c-word’ controversy. Seeing all of these critics who were once bandwagoning when the show first started jumping to act outraged at the slur was surprising to me. Especially when they were okay with Robert De Niro saying ‘F*ck you’ on live tv, or considering the Roseanne apologist Jimmy “Blackface” Kimmel a champion for fake crying on his monologues. And despite all of that, the show came out triumphant. What makes Full Frontal special is that it genuinely cares! It’s not interested in delivering failed memes like Drumpf, or being sarcastic with no solid ground like Michelle Wolf, or creating some try hard ‘emotional’ moments for sympathy and clicks, or inviting garbage like Tomi Lahren to understand “her thoughts”. You can tell the show puts as much effort in their topics as their humor; from the midterm coverage to the immigration issues. It’s always fun yet scary keeping up weekly with Bee and I can’t wait to see who she’ll trigger next! Also I never knew it was a big problem for americans to say “Happy holidays” wtf?? 1. The Americans – FX: My reaction to this final season can be summarized in 3 gifs: With no high stake action scenes or deaths needed, the final episode was still able to deliver more emotional punches than your average dystopian feminist prestige drama. It’s been a pleasure following this family through their tragic and heartbreaking journey. Going for almost your entire life living with the enemy, eliminating every threat in your way, going through unimaginable lengths to gather intel while raising your small children in a different environment only to get betrayed then watch everything you built get ruined is tough to watch. What’s genius about this show is that no one gets to win. Not only do we see the Jennings get abruptly separated but we also feel how shattering the whole outcome is for Stan, being betrayed by his close friend, and left with even more unanswered questions. I mean that entire scene in the garage is just I definitely shed some few tears Watching the finale felt like the end of an era. It’ll obviously go down as one of the best of the decade, and I’m going to deeply miss these characters!

I had to stop BoJack Horseman because it got too much for me... maybe when I'm in a better place in my life but for now, it hits too hard. I can very much believe that it's still excellent though Atlanta I'm weary about starting, but it's probably the next thing i'm gonna binge. I heard that it's pretty weird and off the walls, so im interested. Unlike many people; Kidding clicked with me from the beginning, it's a standard story about processing grief but executed in a very creative way! If you like he cast you'll enjoy it very easily! I completely understand abt BoJack! Hope you'll watch eventually! On 12/27/2018 at 6:26 PM, Vilppu said: when you put it like that... SM really fell off huh (i thought power up was nice but that's it) The "Bananana" hook was cute at first but yeah, didn't have as much replay value as say Red Flavor... Even the Taeyon song was kinda garbaj and she released some fairly decent tracks last year. On 12/27/2018 at 6:59 PM, madonnas said: Dial Tone is an interesting pick.. TUN is good The BoA song is cute. No Angel is a banger. Venice bitch and Golden hour are beautiful. Black Pearl is good but why choose it when we got siren? Dial Tone is a bit different from Ayesha's Britney throwback sound which i'm not a huge fan of... I like Siren, but i've been playing BP more! On 12/28/2018 at 7:31 PM, Wicked said: You didn't ask me but yes, it's so good! OT: Well, another serve! Questioning Florence winning over Isabelle though. Jim really came and served the Comedy guys up The Florence pick is a little biased but still, she really nailed it in Drummer Girl. Managing to outact Shannon and Skarsgard is no small feat, especially with a **** story! And yeah literally no one came close to Jim this year King!
Maddox Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 And at last! Thank you all so much for going through my terrible TV write-ups and following my music selection I appreciate it a lot!! See y'all next year where i'll attempt to do a best of the decade TV list!
KasioKas Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Using Queen Mrs. Maisel as a final gif but it's nowhere in your top 5? Blasphemy. I don't care for comedy family series because it's mostly generic plots multiple previous shows have covered, but you've praised this one alot this yr. Tu,n making top 20 is surprising. My #1 show being your #7 nn, an excellent season tbh.
Jorge Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 MGMT is great (Check out my countdown in Best Of 2018 ? )

Pink Matter Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Interesting #1 choice , not my fave from Childqueen but it's still solid! Pretty much enjoy everything besides 5-7 (haven't heard those lol) I wish I watched more TV to appreciate your TV lists but all of your write ups were nice to read! Great countdown
Staryu Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 Completely agree about The Americans, the garage scene was amazing, the whole finale was, when Paige left the train the look on Elizabeth's face. Very happy you have The Good Fight at #2 too what an excellent show and in the wrong hands the plethora of hot topics plot lines would be so cringe but they are not at all with Christine & Robert/Michelle King steering the ship, they are all treasures, I love them/their work.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 3, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted January 3, 2019 Listening to Joy for the first time now.... I like Dive, Jeannie, and Girlfriend a LOT, tho they aren't my #1 picks for the artists they still are up there, so great top 5!!!
