swiftie13 Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 (edited) Spoiler HOME HUMOR HILL CHARTS RADIO NEWS PODCAST Friday, April 20, 2018 Four Twenty Blazing Up the Charts After a wintry slumber, Platinum Records decided it was time to recruit eligible songwriters once more to take over the industry. A lucky 30 were able to send their songs for review and have them recorded for other artists. While the charts are still being calculated, we will be evaluating the quality of the lyrics and predict their hit potential. Let’s begin with songs were various degrees of good but will not get quite to the top. This week songwriter NaitPhoenix wrote Lights, a seasoned piece with very good flow despite its vague and clunky chorus. The third verse was definitely a highlight for the entire batch. Conatus’ You Only Want Me When You’re Drunk features a firm grasp of structure and story as well as emotional, straightforward language that feels like those rare good country songs. We’re a fan of the alcohol/spirits wordplay. Obsession gave us Drive Away, which weaved the driving notice really well throughout the song. It felt purposeful, even the “wanderlust/dust” rhyme. It was desperate and relatable. Did someone get nostalgia early 2010’s nostalgia? KatyCatPH’s song Scream My Name (The Fame) felt like a blend between early Ke$ha (dollar sign still present) and Gaga. However it stuck with that mood all throughout that it made sense. The rhyme schemes held it together very nicely despite the basic language. More modern is ICEY’s Body On Me, a summery Fifth Harmony-esque anthem. With its smooth writing and good meter choices, it feels like a song any group would want for an easy hit if not credibility. Urban Princess, penned by Kylie Jenner feels just as juvenile and poppy. The meter was there although the stressing didn’t allow for a smooth reading of the rap. “And I’m feelin’ the riches from taking off my rags,” was one of the best lines of the week! Returning champion MattyTacos delivered Magician’s Hand, a crafty tune with cohesive imagery. In the second verse, drugs and magic collide into one of the best verses of the week and possible one of his best ever. Although the bridge could have been rewritten to lead up to the last chorus’ message, it was a solid twist. Mariahisms were plenty. We enjoyed the pre chorus flow of Lukey’s Teardrops of Pain, although the actual song felt short with no real resolve. It would make for a beautiful interlude, however! The poetic Runaways by Body Talk told the story very well although the imagery choices were a bit scattered. There’s a moment where the flowery language breaks and a more realistic “grabbed my thigh,” comes in, those are good songwriting moments. Casandra by Achilles. felt like a feminist anthem when it wasn’t playing victim. The word choices were strong and the chorus feels like a smash out of the gate, but the rest of the song felt like regular prose. The flow really made Tsareena’s Siren Song, despite the language not being the most interesting but it’s very emotional. The repetition of baby and feelings and other words feels like a carnal desperation. Water imagery is also always a safe bet. Impulsive by Nature by Avocado gave offDisney villain teas, and we’re here for it. It’s a style that very few can pull off. The rhyme schemes were entertaining and some interesting metaphors were used throughout the piece butIt almost fell into a pretentious category with some AP-esque diction choices. Lane Boy gave us Hunger this week. For wordy verses like that, it’s usually a good idea to also have some internal rhyme scheme for the sake of flow but that’s us being pedantic. The language here is quite beautiful and poetic. Structurally, it sticks out. it still has a lyrical feel to it despite looking like a poem. We’re too uncultured over at HDD to name a good reference but Alesus’ Void was very dark and twisty. The repetition of motifs are cleverly incorporated (murky water). The structure made this easy to read and follow and the language was beautiful as well. We’ll admit, the true meaning escaped us. Although it was not exactly about Link and Zelda, ceremonial’s Breath of the Wild gave good story telling although it felt impersonal and safe. It’s very well written, however. The structure is tight and the chorus feels like a chant/lullaby. It’s also wrapped up very nicely and it brings the piece together. Corsola's Cocoon offered a provoking concept, although next time just exclude all the notes. It would have been an interesting piece even without the things you may add later. To break from character, I’m sorry to hear about the backstory, I too have experienced it and know that you aren’t alone. The piece was well written and while there could have been more story, it wasn’t a bad way to begin the competition. (Not to be that publication, but to be that publication, we suggest Auburn look at the racist implications behind the word gypsy). Anyway, Galaxy Bedouin was focused, cohesive, and it felt good to read. The imagery was on point and it was short and sweet. There were a few lines that felt like they were just there to look pretty but they did look pretty, so! Now, we asked specific members to pick and choose the worst of the week. These were some of the comments: MTrain (Heaven) - It feels like it’s constantly changing writing styles, but the topic stays cohesive. The nostalgia is there but this could be more evocative if you stick to one style. (There were vague straightforward segments, poetic segments, specific storytelling segments). OreGuy (Make the Glass Half Empty) - The opening couplet has a very cute concept, some of the best imagery this round, but it could have been written better. The bridge was wonderful, I liked the structure and it brings the whole concept together. Overall rather simple, but it got the message across. RihsusChrist(ATG) (Miami) - This sounds like a Welcome to New York type of song, take that as you will. I did like the whole Miami the city/Miami the girl concept. The story telling was there as well but the language didn’t captivate me, it was all over the place (fairies, Daisy Dukes, clubs, turbulent seas). beatinglikeadrum (Let’s Get Lost) - It feels like it’s the first song you’ve ever written. Usually a song needs at least one cohesive thing to make it work, whether its meter or rhyme scheme or something to glue it together. This had nothing of the sort. UFO (Island) - There were a couple great lines, but overall it felt very melodramatic rather than deep. Cute concept. Bring better execution next time. PokiTaurus (Reignited) - This feels like a soundtrack song to a film that I have no idea what the plot is but feels relevant to it. Otherwise I have no context to go from. The language is very weird, some parts are flowery, and then you have “hold on to your sheep and maybe your weave,” in there. I guess Spyro has something to do with context but I’m not aware of what that is. I won’t hold it against you, but there should have probably been more context to help me understand. Xed (Burned into the Ashes) - This feels a little too simple and cliche. The concept has been done a lot and there’s nothing new being brought to the table. SeanKevinMusic (Playing Pretend) - I like this structure, it’s very put together without being strict. The actual lyrical content isn’t anything groundbreaking but it feels written to fit a melody which is valid. I like the emotions presented in this entry. The beginning started off with a nice image of a porch but then it never got resolved. I like specific imagery like that and I feel they could have been peppered in a little more. Ouch, hopefully they don’t take it too personal! Finally, we selected which songs had the biggest hit potential: Kunst (Butterfly Weather) - Living for the language, imagery, and flow. Every line had a purpose. You’re one to watch, darling. I love love love the titular line (well entire second verse). Gastrodonatella (The Gallery) - This is quite beautiful, loved the imagery. You stuck with the concept the whole time and I love how in the bridge, the gallery is external, but in the choruses, the gallery is more internal. The chorus also gives me Joni vibes (maybe cause she also has a song called The Gallery idk). Speezy (Handle it All) - Very short and sweet. It’s captivating and I love the whole ‘come find out’ kind of attitude. This is one of your best songs yet. No lines were wasted. Citrus (Friends) - This is very Citrus-brand emotional and that’s one of the best compliments I can give. You have a way of detailing a specific event or emotion and running with it. This is no exception. I felt it, I’ve been there before on both ends and this took me back there. I’m looking forward to your work this season. Lucky #17 (Weatherman) - This is so cute and clever! I feel the fully produced song already. It’s both lyrical and quirky. The first verse felt clunky but the rest of the song is pretty much on point. Tune in soon for the charts! < PREVIOUS STORY NEXT STORY> Edited April 21, 2018 by swiftie13
