Lazuli Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Third Of May and Liability Man Of War But it's not the best of the 3 Put Your Money On Me almost singlehandedly saved that abortion of an album tbh! Creature Comfort is great too I don't know what people see in Sue Me Didn't think I would see New York be so high in anyone's list! Any Party is so lovely Malibu and Chariot

Any Party is so lovely Malibu and Chariot Thanks for the comments you guys also learn to embrace the sligh messiness of Sue me @Lazuli I'll finish my song list today and post my HMs of the album list as well. Actually I wanted to get this done before Christmas but I doubt I'll manage to do so but let me continue with songs 23 - 11 11. Lorde – Sober “But what will we do when we’re sober?“ how many times has this sentiment been the main question in modern pop music? What to do when you inevitably have to face up to your emotions, when the high fades away and you have no excuse left to not deal with it. The answer isn’t clear in this track so all that is left is to enjoy the best production on Melodrama and follow Lorde’s invitation to dance. 12. Chelsea Wolfe – The Culling Perhaps no song on Hiss Spun is a more accurate summary of the entire album; the slow build-up, the eerie atmosphere, the heavy doom metal release, the twisted lyrics and Chelsea’s sirene vocals. All are present on this centerpiece of an outstanding album. 13. Casper – Wo die wilden Maden graben An explosive punk rock track and a clever and cynical take on modern hedonism Wo die wilden Maden juxtapositions humans with literal maggots, incapable of not gorging themselves on meaningless pleasures and a desperate attempt to find meaning beyond these things. 14. Brand New - Same Logic/Teeth Perhaps the ugliest song released this year, Same Logic/Teeth offers very little but pure self-loathing; cutting away emotional layers only to find more **** underneath, self-harm, mental illnes, feeling useless and being caught in habitual ****-ups. It’s emo in its most destrutive form and slightly hard to listen to. 15. Frank Ocean – Chanel Chanel is a testament to Frank Ocean’s evolution as an artist: ambitiously structured, vividly narrated and emotionally bare, it’s an alternative R&B trip of masterful precision. 16. Car Seat Headrest – War Is Coming (If You Want It) “This is a song about not killing people“ This is the quote that accompanied the release of this track shortly after the disastrous Charlottesville ralley this year. I don’t think much more explanation is necessary. 17. Snail Mail – Thinning Lo-fi indie rock can be tricky to nail, always posing the risk of sounding boring or uninspirired. Snail Mail however pull the sound off perfectly largely thanks to the clever lyrics and emotive singing of frontwoman Lindsey Jordan. 18. The xx – A violent noise The perfect blend between their “old sound“ and the “Jamie xx sound“ A violent noise embraces its subtlety and keeps the beat deliberately subdued to give room to the emotional lyricism and vocal delivery. 19. Julien Baker – Turn out the lights One oft he saddest songs on Julien Baker’s already very sad second album, Turn Out the lights is a frightingly honest exploration of depression, human relationships and loneliness. 20. Lorde – Supercut Supercut is a midtempo excercise in patience. The pulsating beat is always bubbling underneath Lorde’s vocals and the song finds the final release in one of Lorde’s best vocal performances to date over a meticulously placed acoustic break. Lyrically Lorde finds herself rewinding a past relationship, seeing all the little moments in vivid color, often bluring the lines between what should be and what actually was. 21. Father John Misty – Total Entertainment Forever Leave it to perhaps the cheekiest and most charismatic singer-songwriter out right now to carve out our dystopian future where endless entertainment kills humanity off for good. If the opening line about cyber-****ing Taylor Swift wouldn’t put a smile on my face every time this might be a depressing track. Maybe it is. I don’t know. 22. Björk – Blissing me A beautiful Vespertine throwback, Blissing me is one of the most intimate tracks of Björk’s career. Being an incredibly relatable!11! story of two music lovers falling in love over sharing music over a subtle production it is one of her most stunning tracks to date. 23. Creeper – Room 309 Why do so few punk bands utilise acoustic guitars? Perhaps, cause the instrument is inherently un-punk-y, lacking the visceral punch and noise required to get you anger across. Or perhaps cause it takes a large amount of vision and talent to go through punk rock, arena rock, doomy rock and an acoustic outro in the span of under 3 minutes. Well, Creeper managed to it, concluding the best song from their debut album with the often posed question “ If there's a god up watching us / I just can't see then how could he / Build a world but still not fix you and me?“
theblackestday Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Why is this in reversed order Chanel and The Culling Blissing Me is a cute girl... cute next to gorgeous (every other song on utopia) Same Logic / Wig is obv the best song here.
Playa Playa Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Supercut & Sober are my two faves from Melodrama Chanel is so good too. And Turn Out the Lights. And Blissing Me. And Total Entertainment Forever! Excited for the Top 10
Eeveelution Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Lots of good songs whew, i can't keep up. I think Sober is probably my fav so it's fitting that it's the highest placing song yet.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 The Culling and Chanel Supercut's one of my faves & Same Logic was also a standout on Science Fiction. Waiting on something a bit more official from Carseat, but I get what they were going for.
Zay Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Love the Snail Mail EP Blissing Me, Thinning, Chanel, and Sober

Felt very poignant to me. 3 hours ago, prézli said: Really, sis? Top 10 10. The National – Guilty Party The electronic touches that appeared on Sleep Well Beast enlarged their sound, creaing wider soundscapes than their classic indie rock line-up. However, they lost none of the haunting imtimacy that made their previous work so endearing and Guilty Party is the album's highlight with beautiful electronic synths that enrich their sound and Matt's warm voice in the foreground. 9. St. Vincent – Happy Birthday Johnny Funny how the best song on MASSEDUCTION turned out to be the one where the production was stripped back instead of amped up. On a deliberately personal downer of a song, Johnny (seriously who is this Johnny who keeps ****ing our Annie up?) is once again the focal point. Living a broke down life and accusing Annie of betraying her, she has nothing left to wish him well in a spiritual sense wherever he is. When the song peaks with St. Vincent singing the (perhaps literal) devastating accusation “Annie, how could you do this to me?“ the wall between art and real life is officially broken and all that’s left is a burning feeling inside the stomach. 8. Vagabon – Cold Apartment A beautiful contemplation of a past love, Cold Apartment takes its name from the lyrical climax of the song where Vagabon reflects on the time when she and (presumably) her love used to sit on her cold apartment floor together, blissfully certain their love was forever. The finality of the lyrics give the whole thing a bittersweet taste and Vagabon's delivery takes the emotions to a whole new level. 7. Julien Baker - Appointments Julien Baker writes about all those feelings we all wish didn't exist and Turn out the lights was filled with various songs detailing the depths of human emotion. Yet no song feels more potent than the album's lead single Appointmens. It's one of those tracks whose emotional vastness is hard to summarise. In fact it feels like Julien herself struggles to sing out the lines. Although maybe too depressing for some, Appointments gives a voice to a group of people whose life is often pushed out of out minds to avoid dealing with the uncomfortable reality they deal with every day. 6. Mount Eerie – Real Death Good luck making it through this without sobbing. 5. Arca – Reverie On his self-titled album Arca has finally found his voice; literally and figuratively. And no track features a bolder vocal performance than Reverie. A vague love song in his native tongue Reverie climaxes with Arca challenging his significant other to love him one more time if he dares to, all while the frentic electronic production offers release to the inner turmoil. 4. Björk – Arisen my senses The opener from Björk’s ninth album has a lot to compete with: Hidden Place,Moon, Hunter… these are just a selection of excellent openers that have almost become expected among fans from a Björk album. All the more satisfying is the fact that Arisen my senses holds up the tradition more than proudly. It’s a blissful electronic gate (hehe) into the album, inviting and sonically warm, perfectly underlying Björk’s powerful and reasonant vocal and the emotional rebirth she's conveying on the album. 3. Chelsea Wolfe – Two Spirit Two Spirit is a meditative and hypnotising song. The chord progression sneaks up on you while Chelsea’s breathy vocals take the lead, singing about feeling inverted and concave. The piercing guitar riffs align with Chelsea’s shrill vocals just in time to give way to one of the most unusual and satisfying musical climaxes of the year. 2. Lana Del Rey – Change Lana experimented with a few sounds on her latest album Lust for life so it was perhaps a little surprising to me that the song that stuck with the most is the simple and intimate piano ballad Change. Apparrently recorded just the night before the deadline, Change features not more than Lana and a lonely piano. Stripped bare Lana’s voice shines as it rarely did before, highlighting her rich and unique tone capable of transforming simple words into revelatory statements. Change felt like the most poignant track Lana could’ve released in 2017, capturing both the political landscape as she intended but also the steps of moving forward as a person. 1. Casper – Flackern, flimmern My favorite song of the year is the grandiose closer on Casper‘s third album Lang lebe der Tod. It’s a genre-bending ride through many of the lyrical trademarks of his music; it’s about carving out space for yourself without pushing other people away, it’s about battling his own personal demons and about living with wolves that are always clawing at your door . Accompanied by a slow-build that ultimately peaks in cathartic screams and an epic post-rock clash of guitars with the liberating mantra of „Plötzlich alles so leicht“ (Suddenly everything’s so easy) ,it’s the perfect closer to an album whose moments of optimism are spare. So, that concludes my favorite 170 songs of 2017. I will update the OP shortly and post my Honorable mentions for the album list later tonight and then that should be it for today. Vxspertine Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 A TOP 10 Guilty Party really is the album's biggest highlight, one of their best songs for sure HBJ is one of the best songs on Asseduction Loved what you said about Appointments, didn't see it that way tbh Reverie is literally a perfect song AMS, although it's not one of my favorites on Flutopia, I still like it a lot and I definitely see the appeal I didn't listen to your #1 but I'm definitely going to give the whole album a listen
