Lucas32 Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 40. Fleet Foxes - Third of May / Ōdaigahara The longest track on Fleet Foxes third album Crack-Up is a representation of their continous evolution of their trademark sound; featuring ambitious melodic structures, metaphoric lyrics and their classic sound of winter-y indie folk. 41. Vagabon – The Embers The Embers serves as a great introduction to Vagabon's first full length record. Singing about feeling small on a bus and losing someone else's cat only serve as gateways to the song's bold central metaphor; everyone else is a shark except for herself. It takes courage to reference yourself by name on the introductory track on your debut album but Laetitia pulls it off with elegance and a brooding sense of defiance. 42. Destroyer - A Light Travels Down the Catwalk The highlight from Ken, Dan's warm voice floats above a shiny midtempo beat to create a feeling of sophisticated loneliness on a, well, a lit-up catwalk. 43. Susanne Sundfør – Good Luck, Bad Luck Featuring perhaps my favorite lyrics of the year, The almighty scientist Says most of the universe is empty and gods don’t exist Well maybe that's where our love ends up No holy grail, just an empty cup Susanne nails the nihilistic feelings of life in one of the most affecting metaphors in recent time. 44. Wolf Parade – Valley Boy Showcasing Wolf Parade's pop sensibility Valley Boy is one of their catchiest and most instant tracks to date thanks to an infectious chorus balancing an immediate melody and lyrics indicating their usual darker undertone. 45. Radiohead – Man of war The best of the three original tracks on the re-release of Radiohead's 1997 classic OK Computer is a wonderful throwback to a time where Radiohead's sonic palett used to mainly consist of guitars. It speaks volumes about the timelessness of OK Computer that 20 years later a cut tracks feels as potent and sounds as fantastic as Man of war. 46. Lorde – Liability One of the best and most stripped back on Lorde's excellent Melodrama, Liability, showcases Lorde's talent as a lyricist and emotive singer. Breathing life into every line Lorde does justice to that destructive feeling of thinking you are a burden to everyone else and better off being alone. 47. Arcade Fire – Put Your Money On Me PYMOM is a slow burner whose subtlety takes a few listens before the song really gets stuck in the head. With charming and honest lyrics and great chord progressions PYMOM is a clear highlight from Everything Now. 48. Cherry Glazerr – Sip o‘ poison One of the noisiest tracks on Apocalipstick show the Cherry Glazerr's more abrasive side: complete with gritty guitars and some poignant shrieking. 49. Alvvays - Dreams Tonite Dreams tonite is a song of bittersweet longing wrapped up in a cozy dream-pop outfit made of light vocals,a saccharine melody and airy production.
bluth Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 The almighty scientist Says most of the universe is empty and gods don’t exist Well maybe that's where our love ends up No holy grail, just an empty cup susanne her lyrics liability is so heartbreaking and amazing. luv seeing alvvays and cherry glazerr too. dna only in the 50s - too low! amazing picks there though - priests, fever ray. luvs it!

Lucas32 Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 24. Björk – Sue Me One of the upbeat(?) tracks on Utopia, Sue Me is a personal defiance against Björk’s husband sueing her for the custody of their daughter. “Sue me all you want, I won’t denounce her origin“ is the bold statement of the song. Björk refuses to be cut out of her child’d life and turned the energy into an energetic and brooding track. 23. Susanne Sundfor - Undercover A beautiful piano ballad that highlights Susanne’s greatest gift; her emotive and haunting voice. 26. Arca – Anoche Anoche is a haunting revelation of hurt and confusion, bolstered by Arca’s intimate vocal performance and a masterful and sinister production. 27. Cherry Glazerr - Told You I'd Be with the Guys The best track off off Apocalipstick is a biting indie rock tale of finding your pack over thundering guitars and accelerating drums. 28. St. Vincent – New York „New York isn’t New York without you love“ is the first line from MASSEDUCTION’s lead single. A beautiful and laid-back exploration of emotions where even New York can’t fill the void that only one person could. 29. Feist – Any Party Sometimes the simplest compliments are the nicest: offering to leave any party for a party of two is Feist’s idea of a compliment and it works incredibly well. 30. Chelsea Wolfe – 16 Psyche Perhaps the most straightforward track from Hiss Spun, 16 Psyche is a great representation of the album; a dark and sexually charged track pushed forward by Chelsea’s demanding howls and the thundering production. 31. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Lord of lightning The centerpiece of Murder of the universe is exactly the off-the-wall psychedelic rock mania I want from King Gizard. And when it leads into Balrog, it’s hard not to compliment for the bold and effective move of intersecting their album with so many spoken word passages. 32. Wolf Parade – Lazarus Online Lazarus Online wasn’t so much an evolution of sound as it was an expansion for Wolf Parade. It’s a gritty piece of art rock with one of my favorite lines of the year “Like getting punched in the heart were your exact words /on describing the music you heard and now I’m the one crying“ I think most music fans can relate. 33. Kendrick Lamar – YAH While the hard hitting DNA was, understandly, the highlight off DAMN to many people, I found myself returning the most to the toned down and hazy track that follows it. A laid-back but by no means vapid track, YAH is the track on DAMN where Kendrick sits back and reflects on his career, heritage and family. 34. Arcade Fire – Creature Comfort Suicide, eating disorders and the obessesive desire to become famous. Self-loathing is the central theme on my favorite track from Everything Now. Over the pulsating beat Will and Regine trade of vocals as if they can’t decide who should sing what and how to sing it. The result is an addictive banger. 35. Casper - Meine Kundigung The penultimate track on the third album of German hip hop visionary is a slow and stripped-back song. Magic becomes the central metaphor for life and Casper’s position as a cult artist in the making. Magic is an illusion just like everything in life, he feels cut in two by the expectations of being an artist and he’s tired of false floors. It’s a captivating and honest track of sadness but acceptance is bubbling under everything. 36. Lana Del Rey – Heroin One of late highlights on Lust for Life is Heroing, a lush and dreamy pop ballad, where Lana namedrops Charles Manson and Mötley Crüe, contemplates America’s obession with serial killers and writing on the walls with blood, perhaps inspired by her own fans breaking in her house. She can’t help to sigh about America for once; “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sick of it“ 37. Creeper – Black Rain (Pop?)-Punk band Creeper released one of the year’s best albums and the opening track Black Rain is a great summary of their diverse and epic sound. 38. Miley Cyrus – Malibu Although the album couldn’t live up to the promises made by the lead single, Malibu remains one of the best pop songs of a year with a timeless melody, stripped down production and Miley’s voice at the forefront. 39. Beach House – Chariot Chariot is a perfect Beach House song. It showcases the sound that they have honed for over a decade and has become entirely their own. The magic of this song lies particularly in the ambiguity of the song ; “A sunny day in a chariot“ is the first line, following the majestic string opening. The feeling of bliss is immediately vanquished by the second line saying “Were they waving back to you?“. Without changing the vocal tone or the production the lines turn the listener into an outsider watching the other people on the sunny day. It’s a strange and mysterious song with a unclear intentions. It’s a perfect Beach House song.

Vxspertine Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) A Sumi stan Undercover is an angelic masterpiece when will anyone else Anoche should have been the intro to the album, Piel is unlistenable and Anoche is actually one of the best tracks on it New York is super cute, I love the video aswell Any Party I really hate Yah to be perfectly honest Arcade Fire should have retired before they ruined their legacy Malibu is Miley's best track, completely agree with what you said about it Edited December 22, 2017 by Vxspertine
