    Kim Petras

KIM PETRAS The legendary singer and songwriter Kim Petras arrived in L.A. from Germany knowing damn well USA pop needed saving, and she got to work. In August 2017 she exploded onto the scene with her smash bop "I Don't Want It At All" and went on to feature in Charli XCX's beloved TikTok anthem "Unlock It" with uber-babe Jay Park. She continued to spit out fire track one after another with HEAVENLY bops like "Hillside Boys", "Hills", her best song "Slow It Down" and her most well known smash (unless "Coconuts" has demolished?) "Heart to Break." She went onto to release her extremely beloved Halloween themed EP Turn Off The Light, Vol. 1 in October 2018 which had gays around the globe SHAKING to finally have their slutty, depressed version of the holiday solidified into pop history. This was followed up with the equally iconic Vol. 2 in 2019 with a third (and final) installment due around Halloween time 2022. Miss Petras found time to release her not-debut album Clarity in June 2019. It's sexy dance-pop album about being slutty, heart-broken and being successful and we had no choice but to stan when she dropped a new track every week leading up to its release, obliterating us with "Do Me", "Sweet Spot," "Got My Number" and all the other smashes we bust our bu*sies to. Kim then went quiet for a bit, featuring on a few random bops with Kygo, K/DA and the Studio Killers (ugh "Jenny" is SO GOOD!!!!!!!) before finally preparing her new era, deemed her official ~debut~ having signed onto Republic Records. Before that (I think) she did release a hot sultry bop "Malibu" to bide us through the earliest lockdown times when we were all locked indoors and miserable, but she did find a way to make the world a bit hotter for that period. Anyway, in recent times Kim has released her debut single as a major label artist "Future Starts Now" which is legendary but seems to have gone down like a cold cup of sick, so.... the label moved onto the super catchy, fun, silly and tittylicious "Coconuts" which at the time of writing is being furiously pursued as a TiKToK hit with a big-budget EMA 2021 performance and a recently released dance video. For Valentines 2022, Kim decided to randomly drop a 7-track EP titled **** Pop in the middle of the promo for what she's still somehow claiming is her debut album. That being said the music is fun, sexy and slaps so who are we to complain. March 2023 update: As we all know, the legendary album-that-never-was Problématique was regrettably scrapped by the label and she was sent back to the draw board. Eventually the whole album (except for a couple songs I think) leaked, and a whole second album (tentatively titled Candy) was also scrapped. WELP. All seemed dire for Miss Petras until the legendary "Unholy" era. Teaming up with Sam Smith, the pair released the mega-smash "Unholy" that promptly popped off on TikTok and flew over to the Billboard Hot 100 charts where it rocketed up to the very top, landing Kim her first major chart debut AND a multi-week #1 and multi-month #10 (I think IDK really lol) and held steady for MONTHS. Needless to say this single has LAUNCHED Kim into the mainstream and has enormously boosted her. Obvi the song was low key one of her worst songs, but alas the geepee ate it up and it helped give Kim so major cred and airtime so we must be not bite the hand that feeds us. There've been a few singles released that have flopped post-"Unholy" proving bunheads can't rest on their laurels and one hit does not a chart-queen make. That being said the unnecessarily panned "If Jesus Was A Rockstar" (one of her best songs) and "brr" (meh...) have both been cute, and now, as per usual, we are awaiting news of the ever elusive "major label debut album." August 2023 update: Eventually Kim and Republic finally managed to sort themselves out to actually officially start rolling out the album that would soon be announced as Feed the Beast, with the expected-to-smash-but-flopped-abysmally Nicki Minaj collab "Alone." The track was teased and hyped on TikTok and I think there was some genuine hype for the track because the chorus snippets promised an explosive Europop banger but alas, the verses took on a more trap-influenced low key beat so the chorus we'd already heard 10 times was actually the explosion and everyone fumed. Mercifully Bunheads still got their live, Kim had Nicki on her song which was major but alas it bombed. Moving swiftly on (not really, months later) Feed the Beast album was released in June 2023 and it had bops bops bops. The album made no noise though I fear, and a clear second single hasn't come through yet. Everyone knows it's a rushed compilation of Kim songs that neither fully caters to Kim's artistic desires, Republic records' smashing goals or what the fans want but anyway every song is a banger and Kim's "debut" album is here whether we like it or not, even though it's really like her third or maybe fourth album lol. Now we have the Feed the Beast tour to worry about because, with arenas booked across USA and Europe, and with no notable hit other than the approaching-a-year-old-banger "Unholy" (which everyone is sick of), there hasn't really been any promo of note so no one is too sure what's going on. Fingers crossed the tickets sell cause it's sure to be legendary.

    Jhené Aiko

Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo (born March 16, 1988), better known as Jhené Aiko or simply Jhené, is a American singer-songwriter and recording artist from Los Angeles, California. Formerly signed to The Ultimate Group and Epic Records, she left both labels in order to continue her education. In 2007, Aiko made a return to music, in an interview she spoke on the choice saying “Shortly before I conceived my daughter, I stepped back into the field and took a meeting with a label head. In this meeting, I was innocently told, to ‘sell’ myself when walking into these meetings. “That’s when I decided I would ‘sail’ myself rather than sell myself.” She released a mixtape on March 16, 2011 entitled Sailing Soul(s) via her official website, JheneAiko.com. All the songs on the mixtape were written by Aiko, except “July” which was written by Micah Powell and most of the songs were produced by Fisticuffs, except “July” and “You vs Them” which were produced by Bei Maejor, “Real Now” which was produced by Roosevelt, “Do Better” which was produced by J. Lbs and “Growing Apart” which was produced by Tae Beast. The album's artwork was shot by photographer Jay 3. The mixtape also features collaborations from Miguel, Drake and Kanye West as well as others. In 2012, Aiko met with No I.D., record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam, who ended up signing Aiko to his Artium Records imprint through Def Jam. Jhené Aiko released her debut EP Sail Out on November 12, 2013. www.jheneaiko.com Video Playlist (All Videos Featuring Jhené): PROJECTS 1. The Beginning 2. Stranger 3. Hoe (ft. Are Spotify and TikTok the new MTV?

I've seen TikTok being compared to MTV based on setting trends and making songs become smash hits but Spotify basically has everything MTV had: 1. Heavy Rotation on MTV (being played every hour or two) is the equivalent of Spotify plastering your song on every major playlist. 2. Big events being sponsored by MTV along with having journalists and VJ's interview acts is the equivalent of Spotify doing interviews and sponsoring big events. 3. MTV doing massive promo and several specials on the day a big act released music vs. Spotify doing special things for some big acts when they release new music (short clips of them talking about each song and other things) 4. Discovering a new video or song you would've never heard of had you not watched MTV vs. discovering a new song or act by Spotify presenting it to you via their "recommended for you" type of playlists. 5. There was a local MTV in every country and there is a local Spotify in every country. NOTE: Spotify is different from iTunes since the latter was almost 100% demand while the former still dictates what makes a playlist or the Top 50 charts via algorithm and playlist placements. What do you think?

    Selena Quintanilla

Queen of Tejano music - Selena Quintanilla Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American singer and fashion designer. Her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. In 2020 Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin songs chart. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market. Solo studio albums Selena (1989) Selena was initially scheduled for a summer 1989 release, but was pushed back to October 17, 1989. Unimpressed with the image Guerra presented, creative director Rubén Cubillos decided to express an image of "natural beauty" for Selena on this album's cover. EMI Latin detested the album cover and called it "the worst they'd ever gotten." Cubillos believed the company "didn't understand it" and said he liked the cover because of "the warmth of her skin." The album debuted at number 17 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for the week ending December 2, 1989. It was the highest debut for an album that week, beating out La Fiebre's On the Right, and was Selena's first album to chart on a national music chart. It promptly slipped off the charts the following week but returned to number 15 after the holiday season. Selena rose to number 12 for the week ending January 27, 1990. The album peaked at number seven in its seventh week on March 24, 1990. Ven Conmigo (1990) Following the album's release, Selena was called the Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson, and Madonna of Tejano music. Selena responded to these comparisons saying she did not like to be stereotyped. Selena's popularity "surged" following Ven Conmigo's release. Ven Conmigo debuted at number eight on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart the week ending November 3, 1990. It was the highest debut album of that week, and surpassed Selena as her highest debuting album on the chart at the time. The following week, the album fell to number ten. It reached number six on the Regional Mexican Albums chart in its sixth week, surpassing Selena as her highest charting album, before peaking at number three. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) The vast majority of contemporary reviews were positive, and the album received widespread critical acclaim. Music critics found the recording to be Selena's "breakthrough album". Entre a Mi Mundo sold 50,000 units in pre-sale copies, and debuted at number nine on the then-biweekly US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for the week ending June 13, 1992. It peaked at number one on September 5, 1992, displacing La Mafia's Estas Tocando Fuego from the top spot. The album remained at number one for 18 consecutive weeks until La Mafia dethroned Entre a Mi Mundo in the week ending May 15, 1993. By July 1993, Entre a Mi Mundo had sold 100,000 units in the United States. On July 10, 1993, Entre a Mi Mundo debuted at number 10 on the newly formed US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. In 1994, Entre a Mi Mundo ranked as the second best-selling regional Mexican album of all-time. Amor Prohibido (1994) The album's sound received positive reviews. Described by author Ed Morales as a "subtle evolution", and by The Dallas Morning News as "delightfully infectious, hummable [and] ultra radio-friendly", the tracks were summarized and praised by The Monitor as "romantic, charming and ebullient." Billboard characterized the album's sound to be transparent for those unfamiliar with its musical diversity. After the album's release, Selena was considered "bigger than Tejano itself", and was credited for tearing down barriers in the Latin music market. Amor Prohibido established Selena as a figure in American pop music. Critics felt the recording elevated Selena among the leading females in the Latin music sector and established her as a leading performer among young singers with mainstream appeal. In the updated edition of Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, the album ranked at number 479. Dreaming of You (1995) The majority of contemporary reviews were positive. According to Erlewine, the English-language tracks on the album "are no different than her Spanish songs"; he also said the album "would have been stronger" if the singer had lived. He finished his review by calling the album a "powerful—and touching—testament to her talents". Dreaming of You was listed as the ninth "Top 10 Posthumous Albums" by Time magazine in 2010. It was named as the third-best posthumous album of all-time by BET, which called the recording a "heartbreaking testament to a young talent on the verge of superstardom". The album sold 331,000 units its first week and debuted atop the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first and only predominately Spanish-language album to do so. The recording debuted atop the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Albums and the U.S. Billboard Latin Pop Albums charts, displacing Selena's 1994 album Amor Prohibido and the Gipsy Kings' Best of' album, respectively.
