  1. Hampton University Student-Athlete Comes Out As First Gay Football Player at an HBCU Byron Perkins, a defensive back at Hampton University, shared his sexuality on Instagram. Byron Perkins, a Hampton University defensive back, has made history after he publicly came out as gay, the first time a football player at an HBCU has done so. He made the announcement on Wednesday on his Instagram story where he wrote, “I’ve decided that I’m going to make a change, and stop running away from myself. I’m gay, let it be known that this is not a ‘decision’ or a ‘choice.’ Yes, this is who I am, this is who I’ve been, and this is who I’m going to be. Simply put, I am who I am.” Since 2014, when former University of Missouri football star Michael Sam came out as gay, there have been more and more college and professional football players who have been open and willing to share their sexuality. But Perkins and Sam, are two of the only Black football players to come out as gay. In an interview with Outsports.com, Perkins shared that his coaches have been very supportive, but the reaction from his teammates has been good but “very mixed.” Perkins shared that he wants to lend assistance to other Black men at HBCUs that are struggling with their sexuality, so coming as gay could be the first step to helping others. More from Outsports.com: “Especially at an HBCU, young Black gay men need an outlet,” he said. “They need a support system. There hasn’t been an out gay football athlete at an HBCU. I want to end the stigma of what people think. I want people to know they can be themselves. “It’s about that kid who’s going to see this and think he can be himself too.” A junior at Hampton, Perkins has six more games to play this season and has recorded 16 tackles, two deflected passes and one interception. He previously played at Purdue University, one of the marquee schools in the Big-Ten, before transferring to Hampton University three years ago, according to Hammerandrails.com. https://www.theroot.com/hampton-university-student-athlete-comes-out-as-first-g-1849686482

  3. Better luck next year? Elizabeth Chan Wins 'Queen of Christmas' Trademark Dispute Against Mariah Carey: 'Badge of Honor In August, Chan and Darlene Love challenged Mariah Carey's decision to trademark the title The court has sided with Elizabeth Chan in blocking Mariah Carey's bid to be the sole "Queen of Christmas." Back in March 2021, the "Fantasy" singer, 53, filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office with hopes of legally marketing herself as the sole "Queen of Christmas," CBS News reported in August. After the bid was made public in July 2022, fellow singer Chan — who claims she also has ties to the "Queen of Christmas" name, had her attorney, Louis W. Tompros of Boston-based WilmerHale, file a formal declaration of opposition against Carey's trademark claim. On Tuesday, Chan announced the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board blocked Carey's attempt of owning the exclusive rights to the title, along with her attempts to trademark "Princess Christmas" and "QOC." 5. Jennifer Aniston made headlines at the start of November when she declared, “There are no more movie stars.” It’s a statement that Quentin Tarantino agrees with, as evidenced by the director’s recent interview on “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast (via Mediaite). Tarantino attributed the loss of movie stars to the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood.” “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.” For Tarantino, Captain America is the star and not Chris Evans. “I’m not even putting them down frankly, to tell you the truth,” the director said earlier about movie stars no longer existing in bulk. “But that is one of the — the legacy of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood movies.” Tarantino also clarified in the interview that he does not “hate” Marvel movies but dislikes them for being the only product Hollywood is interested in making these days. “Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid,” Tarantino said. “There’s an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be ******* happy and totally love them. I mean, they wouldn’t be the only movies being made. They would be those movies amongst other movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not quite as excited about them.” “My only axe to grind against them is they’re the only things that seem to be made,” he added. “And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. That’s what they’re excited about. And so it’s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem.”
