SHELVEN'S BEST OF 2017 Officially turning my "lame banner that's really just a collage of pictures made in 5 minutes" into an annual tradition! Welcome everyone to my second annual "Best Of" list on ATRL! After ignoring this event for many years, I finally decided to give it a try last year, and ended up having a lot of fun with it! Therefore, I've decided to do it again this year, and just like last year, I'm going to keep it relatively short and sweet, with one main list and one smaller bonus list. MAIN LIST: shelven's Top 50 Singles of 2017 As the title of this list suggests, the main feature of my Best Of event will be highlighting my favourite singles of the year! As with last year, there are two main criteria for a song to be eligible for this list: it has to have been officially released as a single (although as with last year, there will be a few songs where I loosen the definition of "single" a bit), and the single must be reasonably associated with 2017. That could mean that the song first came out in 2017, only officially became a single in 2017, only peaked on the charts in 2017, or had a large part of its chart run happen in 2017. Because this is now my second year doing this, I am also adding a third criteria for eligibility: in the interest of keeping the list as fresh as possible, I will not repeat any songs from my 2016 list, so songs that already appeared in my 2016 list but went on to ultimately peak during 2017 will not be included. BONUS LIST: shelven's Top 5 TV Shows of 2017 Also returning from last year is my second mini-list where I highlight my favourite TV shows/seasons of the year! Since this list is so small, entries will be revealed after every 10 songs are revealed from my main list. Like last year, I will picking my 5 favourite TV shows that aired new episodes during 2017, as well as highlighting one "New Discovery", which is a show that I only discovered this year but did not or could not make the official list. Tentative Schedule While I ended up being very successful in following the schedule I made for myself last year, I can't promise the same this year since I'll be on vacation beginning on the 21st with somewhat limited Internet access. Oh, 2017. How I long to see you go. How I fear that 2018 will be worse still. In the dark, dire days that concluded 2016, a fairly frequent line of thinking was that 2017 would produce an outpouring of protest music as our liberal celebrities retaliated against an increasingly-authoritarian conservative government. It was a grotesque, cynical, and trivializing line of thinking, and yet we music fans wondered... Now, a year later, it seems that this hot-take was nothing but hot-air. Instead of becoming overnight activists (and we should mostly be thankful for that, honestly), many artists instead did what artists tend to do best: they offered us a safe harbor. Art's function of providing audiences with an escape from the horrors, annoyances, and/or banality of their daily lives long predates the recording industry itself, but in recent times it seems that artists have become ever-more aware of their role as pleasurable distraction, as welcome escape. A number of acts have even deliberately channeled this escapism throughout their latest releases. Not all artists leaned into escapist themes in their work, though. Some sought to inspire, uplift, motivate, and empower us, offering the emotional reassurance we sometimes desperately need. Some produced music that is revolutionary for no reason other than the fact that it exists. Some tried to lead by subtle example, turning inwards on paths of self-discovery and helping their fans to do the same. Some grew into their own before our very eyes, reminding us that we will not always be what we were (and that this is often a very good thing). Some turned their most private, most traumatizing experiences into accidental anthems for a world that can only wish it had no need for such songs. Some just made us dance. We can never escape from our lives, no matter how much we may wish to be able to. Some would even argue that the more we try to escape, the more likely we are to end up trapped. But if a song is a sanctuary, then it is a place. And if a song is a place, maybe I wouldn't mind being trapped at all. These are my perfect places of 2017. Alright, lets do this ish. It's 2017, I've somehow become my father and I'm itching for a fight. So why not do that as a theme for the Best and Worst of the Year! Granted, there is a lot of good music this year, for a change. But I'm also taking a more free-flow onto my lists rather than forcing it into a Top 50 (or 75...100...200...473...912....) list in which I'd have to add songs or albums that I don't like as much. Welcome to my Best Of 2017 countdown! This is my 7th time participating in the tradition. 2017 was a very interesting year in music. For me, it was a year of discovery. I got into a lot of artists I had not previously heard of or checked out. I also found myself falling more and more in love with alternative R&B, and less in love with pop music. Many major artists released new music this year, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Kendrick Lamar. There was plenty for me to choose from in my countdown. Join me as I count down the top 50 songs, top 10 albums, and top 5 “new finds” (artists I just discovered or got into this year) of 2017.
