Approximately 18,000 cows were killed in a blast at a Texas dairy farm earlier this week, according to local authorities. The explosion, at South Fork Dairy near the town of Dimmitt, also left one person in critical condition. Authorities believe that machinery in the facility may have ignited methane gas. Nearly three million farm animals died in fires across the US between 2018 and 2021. Castro County Sheriff's Office said they had received a report of a fire at the farm at about 19:21 on Monday (00:21 GMT Tuesday). Photos posted by the Sheriff's Office show a huge plume of black smoke rising from the ground. When police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found one person trapped who had to be rescued and flown to hospital in critical condition. While the exact figure of cows that were killed by fire and smoke remains unknown, the Sheriff's Office told the BBC that an "estimated 18,000 head of cattle" had been lost. Speaking to local news outlet KFDA, Sheriff Sal Rivera said that most of the cattle had been lost after the blaze spread to an area in which cows were held before being taken to a milking area and then into a holding pen. "There's some that survived," he was quoted as saying. "There's some that are probably injured to the point where they'll have to be destroyed." Mr Rivera told KFDA that investigators believed the fire might have started with a machine referred to as a "honey badger", which he described as "vacuum that sucks the manure and water out". "Possibly [it] got overheated and probably the methane and things like that ignited and spread out and exploded," he said. In a statement sent to the BBC, the Washington DC-based Animal Welfare Institute said that - if confirmed - a death toll of 18,000 cows would be "by far" the deadliest barn fire involving cattle since it began keeping statistics in 2013.

China Railways has announced plans to develop a bullet train capable of standard operating speeds of 450km/h. The CR450 train will be the latest model in the CR400 Fuxing (“Rejuvenation”) series. At present, these run at 350 km/h, although they have reached 420km/h in test conditions. Zhao Hongwei, chief researcher of the China Academy of Railway Sciences, told China Daily that the more advanced model would be unveiled soon. She said: “The general design and schemes for the train’s subsystems are expected to be finalised next year, and the train will be completed in the near future.” Zhao, who oversaw the development of the Fuxing series, said the difficulties researchers are facing now are not the same as they faced while developing the first generation of trains, which leant on technology developed in Japan and Europe.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Wednesday that President Joe Biden, 80, is likely to die within five years and that his supporters would have to count on Vice President Kamala Harris if he were to win re-election next year. “He announced that he’s running again in 2024, and I think that we can all be very clear and say with a matter of fact that if you vote for Joe Biden you really are counting on a President Harris, because the idea that he would make it until 86 years old is not something that I think is likely,” Haley, 51, said in an interview on Fox News. In an unusually blunt response from the White House, deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told NBC News, “As you know, we don’t directly respond to campaigns from here. But honestly, I forgot she was running.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/nikki-haley-biden-will-likely-die-five-years-rcna81740

Marianne did an amazing conversation for The Breakfast Club. The comments are overwhelmingly positive to her reception. She was pressed on a lot of issues and statements and responded back with great answers. My personal favorite part was after 17minute mark when Marianne gets fired up about injust economic system and why it's being kept that way! Everyone should take their time to listen to this, especially undecided ones!

New YorkCNN — Vice Media will cancel its acclaimed program “Vice News Tonight” as part of a broad restructuring that will result in painful cuts across the organization, the company said Thursday. “In response to the current market conditions and business realities facing [Vice Media Group] and the broader news and media industry, we are moving forward on some painful but necessary reductions, primarily across our News business,” co-chief executives Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala announced in a memo to employees. Dixon and Lokhandwala, who stressed that news is “core” to the larger company and that it will not “exit” the business, added, “We are transforming Vice News to better withstand market realities and more closely align with how and where we see our audiences engaging with our content most.” The cuts will result in dozens of employees losing their jobs, people familiar with the matter told CNN, with the company’s Washington, D.C., bureau being hit particularly hard. The exact number of jobs lost by the changes, however, was not clear. The restructuring will have major implications on news teams at Vice Media. The company will sunset the Vice World News brand and fold its operations under the Vice News umbrella, giving the company a singular news brand. It will also slash its dedicated audio unit, as well as the Vice World News short form video team. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/04/27/media/vice-news-tonight-canceled/index.html
