  3. Dramatic new video shows a male security guard delivering a knockout punch to a woman, who demanded reparations to cover her $1,000 grocery bill at Target -- and compared herself to Rosa Parks. Surveillance video and body cam footage, first posted by the Daily Mail, showed security officer Zach Cotter clashing with customer Karen Ivery inside the store in Blue Ash, OH, last October. As you can see, Cotter got into the middle of a heated argument between a store manager and Ivery, who allegedly asked for reparations to pay her eye-popping bill. Cops say Ivery told the manager she was "owed this" ... referring to the slavery reparations. Police say Cotter told Ivery she needed to chill or leave the store because she was acting aggressively. Instead, she charged at him, backing him into his office. That's when Cotter hauled off and socked Ivery in the face, knocking her to the floor. Cotter then called police, who determined he acted in self-defense and Ivery was the instigator. Ivery was cited for disorderly conduct, served one day in jail and paid a $110 fine. Ivery told police she wanted to have a larger conversation about "how money works" and "how it's been working in our community in a very wrong way." She added, "This is my Rosa Parks moment." Here is the long version

Newborn Orangutan Murdered By Swiss Zoo

A baby Orangutan was killed—not euthanized—at the Basel Zoo after her mother, Revital, died. This is a case of "zoothanasia" as I call it, because killing the baby was not done as a mercy killing because she was suffering from interminable pain or from an incurable disease—she wasn't. The zoo decided the baby wouldn't live or have a quality life because she was motherless. This claim is unfounded. (see Note 1) Shame on them. Killing the baby is ethically indefensible no matter what zoo administrators say. This is not a "radical animal rights" position but rather all about decency and respect for the life of every single individual—the baby should not have been killed. And, of course, the mother should never have been impregnated. Zoos kill otherwise healthy animals for a wide variety of self-serving reasons. Many people don't know this. Zoos call it "management euthanasia" to sanitize this heinous act. The individuals are written off as “surplus animals” and slaughtered. In a BBC News essay by Hannah Barnes called "How many healthy animals do zoos put down?" we learn: “EAZA [European Association of Zoos and Aquaria] does not publish these records or advertise the number of healthy animals that have been culled, but executive director Dr Lesley Dickie estimates that somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 animals are 'management euthanised' in European zoos in any given year.” Three thousand to five thousand animals isn't a small number at all. Indeed, I was shocked when I learned this fact and that this large number of animals was considered to be disposable at the whim of zoo administrators who then come up with lame excuses for why they killed the animals. In January 2018 we learned that a zoo in Sweden had killed — they used the word “euthanized”—nine healthy lion cubs since 2012 because they couldn’t afford to keep them. People who didn't know that zoos do these sorts of sickening things are incensed as they should be. After Marius the young giraffe was slaughtered in the Copenhagen Zoo in 2014, I had contact with people from all over the world about how surprised and upset they were, including many who never before had gotten involved with animal protection. Animals who understandably escape from their cages and horrific lives at zoos also are routinely killed. In December 2022, three chimpanzees were shot dead soon after they escaped from their cages in the Furuviksparken zoo in Sweden, and a fourth was also killed shortly thereafter. The zoo was closed and the chimpanzees were killed because the zoo didn’t have enough anesthetic on hand. They also said that the chimpanzees were killed because of concerns for human safety.

  11. Fewer than 400,000 babies were born in Italy last year, the lowest number since the 1861 unification of the country, highlighting worsening demographic dynamics in an economy beset by high levels of public debt. Just 393,000 babies were born in Italy in 2022, the national statistics agency Istat said on Friday, down about 1.8 per cent from the 400,249 born in 2021. The decline came despite the introduction of a financial incentive scheme aimed at encouraging more women to have children. The scheme, crafted by former prime minister Mario Draghi’s government in 2021, provides families with monthly financial allowances ranging from €50 to €175 for every newborn child. Those payments continue until the child is either economically independent or reaches 21. https://www.irishtimes.com/world/europe/2023/04/07/italian-births-drop-to-lowest-level-since-countrys-unification/

  13. YouTube prankster shot and wounded by target of practical joke A popular US YouTube creator who prides himself on making videos in which he displays odd behavior to put people off intends to keep at it, even after one of his targets allegedly shot him nearly to death. The man, identified as 31-year-old Alan Colie, pulled a gun out and shot Cook in the stomach, investigators allege. Cook, 21, survived the wound and had to undergo surgery after first responders brought him to a hospital in critical condition. “I was playing a … simple … joke, and this guy didn’t take it very well,” Cook told WUSA from his hospital bed. Cook said the man who shot him “didn’t say anything” before firing on him, which authorities said also caused a panic among mall-goers. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/05/youtube-prankster-tanner-cook-classified-goons
