  1. Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the SNP. Police confirmed a 52-year-old woman was taken into custody as a suspect and is being questioned by detectives. It follows the arrest and release of her husband, ex-SNP chief executive Peter Murrell in April. A spokesman for Ms Sturgeon confirmed she was cooperating with the investigation. He said: "Nicola Sturgeon has today, Sunday 11 June, by arrangement with Police Scotland, attended an interview where she was to be arrested and questioned in relation to Operation Branchform. "Nicola has consistently said she would cooperate with the investigation if asked and continues to do so." On 5 April, officers searched Ms Sturgeon's home and the party's headquarters in Edinburgh. Mr Murrell was later released without charge. A luxury motorhome was also seized by police from outside the home of Mr Murrell's mother in Dunfermline. Almost two weeks later, SNP treasurer Colin Beattie was arrested and released without charge. Mr Murrell and Mr Beattie were both treated as suspects and were taken into custody for the legally defined period of up to 12 hours of questioning before being released pending further inquiries. Under the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2016, police can release a suspect for further investigation, but they can be re-arrested at a later date. Nicola Sturgeon served as Scotland's first minister for eight years. Her shock resignation came on 15 February when she said she knew "in my head and in my heart" this was the right time to step down. She is the longest-serving first minister and was the first woman to hold the position. Ms Sturgeon insisted her resignation was not in response to the "latest period of pressure", which has included controversies over gender reforms, trans prisoners and the strategy on independence. However, within a month of her last day on 28 March, the investigation into the SNP's finances - which began almost two years ago - came to the fore. Complaints had been made relating to more than £600,000 that was donated to the SNP by activists. The money was raised after the party sought to raise funds for a future referendum campaign, and Police Scotland launched Operation Branchform to examine what happened to it. X

  10. Source: The Hill President Biden has rejected a legislative attempt to overturn his student loan forgiveness plan, leaving the program's future up to the Supreme Court. He expressed his firm stand on Twitter, stating that he would not give up on supporting working and middle-class Americans with student debt relief of up to $20,000. Biden emphasized that he would never apologize for assisting these citizens as they strive to recover from the pandemic. His plan, which has faced Republican opposition since its inception, is designed to affect 40 million borrowers. The proposal offers $10,000 in loan forgiveness to individuals earning under $125,000 annually, while Pell Grants recipients could receive up to $20,000 in loan forgiveness. Despite the veto, an override could still occur with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate, a feat opponents of the plan are unlikely to achieve. Biden justified his veto, stating his commitment to making college more affordable and providing essential relief to borrowers during the ongoing pandemic recovery. The Senate passed the measure to block the plan with a 52-46 vote earlier this month, and it was approved by the GOP-majority House along party lines, with two Democrats siding with Republicans. Democratic Senators Jon Tester and Joe Manchin, along with Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema, voted against Biden's proposal in the Senate. The resolution opposing the plan was introduced under the Congressional Review Act, enabling Congress to invalidate newly imposed rules and regulations. Due to the nature of this Act, Democrats in the Senate could not stop the measure, and a supermajority of 60 votes was not needed to progress it. Despite the veto, the Supreme Court is still deliberating on the plan. The conservative majority court is anticipated to reject it, with justices expressing doubts during February oral arguments about the Biden administration's authority to forgive up to $20,000 in student loans. Biden first announced his plan in August after making student debt forgiveness a campaign pledge and under progressive pressure to act. While progressives praised the plan as a promising first step towards forgiveness, moderate Democrats and Republicans expressed concern about the anticipated $400 billion cost to taxpayers. When announcing his plan, Biden also signaled the end of the pandemic-era pause on student loan payments, initially instituted in March 2020 under former President Trump and subsequently extended several times. The resumption of payments was confirmed with the passage of the bipartisan debt ceiling agreement, which set a firm resumption date of 60 days after June 30.

"This issue has unfortunately does put… some Muslim families on the same side of an issue as White supremacists and outright bigots," said Democrat Kristin Mink of Montgomery County Council for District 5. "I would not put you in the same category as those folks, although, you know, it's complicated because they're falling on the same side of this particular issue." Mink made the remark after Muslim children from the district spoke out against their parents' inability to opt them out of lessons they deemed violated their faith. She argued Muslim families do not have the religious right to opt their children out of LGBTQ books, similar to parents' inability to opt their children out of studying evolution. https://news.yahoo.com/maryland-democrat-blasts-muslim-children-110413102.html
  14. Chris Licht, the embattled and besieged C.E.O. of CNN, was never the most obvious candidate to helm a global news organization. Sixteen months ago, when I broke the news that David Zaslav had tapped Licht to run the network, I noted that he didn’t seem tailor-made for the job. Licht had a reputation as a wunderkind producer who could work with elite talent, yes, and he was aligned with John Malone’s rich older guy Big Sky vision of recalibrating the network’s politics to its centrist origins. But Licht’s C.V. consisted of programming a few hours of morning or late-night talk television with one or two or three principals, not the management or operational experience that might prepare him for overseeing a 24-hour, multi-billion-dollar, 4,000-person cable network in need of strong strategic leadership, not to mention new business and distribution models. Now, after a year of leadership missteps, programming misfires, a disastrous Trump town hall and the near-total decimation of staff morale in the wake of a chilling all-access Atlantic story, Licht will be vacating the C.E.O. position. I’m told that Warner Bros. Discovery will soon announce that Licht will be stepping down as chairman and C.E.O. of CNN, ostensibly bringing an end to one of the most turbulent periods in the network’s 43-year history. [...] X

  19. https://twitter.com/voxdotcom/status/1658870958252228613 Last fall, an undercover investigator worked for two months at a Virginia farm outside Richmond that raises chickens on contract for Tyson Foods, America’s largest chicken-killing company. During their short stint on behalf of the Washington, DC-based animal rights group Animal Outlook, the investigator documented hours upon hours of the typical horrors found on chicken factory farms: tens of thousands of birds stuffed into dark warehouse-sized barns, many of them severely injured with gruesome lesions, injuries, and deformities. At more than one point, birds are deprived of feed or water, and there was also a rat infestation and footage of bugs crawling in the chickens’ feed. The conditions are visibly at odds with Tyson’s advertising claims that it treats animals humanely and raises “happy” and “healthy” chickens. “It’s just a living nightmare,” the investigator, who requested anonymity due to the covert nature of undercover investigations, told Vox. “A video just does not do it any justice.” “We were disturbed by what we saw in the video,” Tyson Foods spokesperson Kelsie Gibbs wrote to Vox over email. “Since January 2023, no Tyson Foods birds have been placed on this farm and the farmer no longer has a contract to grow for Tyson Foods.” (In March, Tyson Foods announcedit was shutting down operations in the area.) When reached by phone, farm owner Amir Saeed declined to comment on the record. Despite the horrific findings, they’re not all that different from the conditions documented at other farms that raise chickens for Tyson and Tyson’s competitors. But the investigation’s most revealing finding had nothing to do with the conditions of the estimated 750,000 chickens raised annually at the Jetersville, Virginia, facility. Instead, it emerged from a surprisingly candid conversation the investigator secretly recorded between the farm manager and a Tyson Foods “broiler technician advisor,” who worked with Tyson chicken farms in the area. In the video recording, the technician freely acknowledged that the chicken industry’s “free-range” labels were essentially meaningless — a rare instance of an industry insider saying the quiet part out loud. Bringing up a Tyson competitor, the farm manager wonders how other poultry companies handle supposedly free-range-raised chickens. The short answer: They don’t, really. “Those birds don’t go outside — you know that,” the technician replies. “They don’t all go out … Look that up online.” The manager chimes in: “It’s not like they make it like all of ’em come out and enjoy the sun.” “That is strictly for commercial [advertising] purposes,” the technician says. “They pick the prettiest birds [for commercials] and they toss ’em out in the grass.”
