news The Pope invited a group of trans women for pasta, meatballs and tiramisu
Komet posted a topic in Civics
Pope Francis recently sat down for lunch with a group of trans women, who were treated like the VIPs they are, in a bid to offer them comfort and support. The Pope, who in November said that trans people may be baptised and act as godparents or witnesses to marriage under the same conditions as any other adult, further acquainted himself with the group of trans women over an annual lunch. The group of trans women, who all had a history of personally interacting the pontiff, were joined by 1000 poor and homeless guests to mark the Catholic Church’s World Day of the Poor. Together they dined richly on cannelloni pasta filled with spinach and ricotta and meatballs in a tomato-basil sauce, served with a cauliflower puree. Dessert was equally indulgent in the form of tiramisu and petit fours. [...] In October, the pope was praised for saying that same-sex couples could have their unions blessed. His comment comes amid the Bishop of London saying that same-sex couple blessing services in the Church of England are unlikely to take place before 2025, as the church remains divided. Back in January, the pontiff reminded followers that “homosexuality is not a crime” and that countries who criminalise same-sex relationships are “unjust” in doing so. https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/11/23/the-pope-invited-a-group-of-trans-women-for-pasta-meatballs-and-tiramisu/ -

news WHO reacts to increase in pneumonia cases in Northern China
Genius1111 posted a topic in Civics
https://www.who.int/news/item/22-11-2023-who-statement-on-reported-clusters-of-respiratory-illness-in-children-in-northern-china WHO has made an official request to China for detailed information on an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children. At a press conference on 13 November 2023, Chinese authorities from the National Health Commission reported an increase in incidence of respiratory diseases in China. Chinese authorities attributed this increase to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection which typically affects younger children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Authorities stressed the need for enhanced disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and community settings, as well as strengthening the capacity of the health system to manage patients. On 21 November, media and ProMED reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. It is unclear if these are associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities, or separate events. On 22 November, WHO requested additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results from these reported clusters among children, through the International Health Regulations mechanism. We have also requested further information about recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV and mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the current burden on health care systems. WHO is also in contact with clinicians and scientists through our existing technical partnerships and networks in China. Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illness compared to the same period in the previous three years. China has systems in place to capture information on trends in influenza, influenza-like illnesses, RSV and SARS-CoV-2, and reports to platforms such as the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System. While WHO seeks this additional information, we recommend that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, which include recommended vaccination; keeping distance from people who are ill; staying home when ill; getting tested and medical care as needed; wearing masks as appropriate; ensuring good ventilation; and regular hand-washing. WHO will continue to provide updates. -

Two people were killed when a vehicle exploded Friday on the U.S. side of the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the U.S. to Canada at Niagara Falls, New York, according to sources. The Rainbow Bridge has closed in the wake of the incident. The vehicle, believed to be a Mercedes, sped toward a border checkpoint at the U.S. side of the bridge and hit a concrete barrier, multiple sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News. The impact sent the vehicle careening into the area where U.S.-bound cars are sent for secondary screening, sources said. The vehicle burst into flames and exploded, sources said. Investigators have found some sort of suitcase or briefcase on scene, sources told ABC News. They are treating it as a possible explosive device as a precaution and the bomb squad is handling the package. Ron Rienas, GM of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, told ABC News all four Canada-U.S. bridges over the Niagara River have been closed out of an abundance of caution while the Rainbow Bridge investigation continues. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said, "At my direction, the New York State Police is actively working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to monitor all points of entry to New York. I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available." The Buffalo Niagara International Airport said it'll be increasing security, with car checks and additional screenings for travelers. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the explosion and is closely following developments, according to the White House. "We are taking this extraordinarily seriously," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. "We are following up to try and get as many answers as rapidly as possible. … Additional measures are being contemplated and activated at all border crossings across the country." In Toronto, the police department said it's increasing patrols out of an abundance of caution. In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams said he's also monitoring the incident. Adams said the NYPD has already enhanced security for Thanksgiving "so the public will see increased security at locations across New York City, including entry and egress points into and out of the city." https://abcnews.go.com/US/rainbow-bridge-us-canada-closed-explosion-sources/story?id=105102476

news Mayor rejects plan to build huge Vegas-style MSG Sphere in London
Gwendolyn posted a topic in The Lounge
Mayor Sadiq Khan has rejected plans to build a huge Vegas-style Sphere in east London. The ball-shaped venue would have been similar to the American sphere where U2 played the first show of its residency on 29 September. The Madison Square Garden Company submitted a planning application to the London Legacy Development Corporation to transform a site in Stratford. The New York-based company bought a 4.7-acre site which has been left empty since it was last used as a temporary coach park during the 2012 London Olympics. The new venue, known as the MSG Sphere, had capacity of 21,000 for seating and standing and a giant LED screen. It would have hosted concerts, shows and sporting events. A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “London is open to investment from around the world and Sadiq wants to see more world-class, ambitious, innovative entertainment venues in our city.“But as part of looking at the planning application for the MSG Sphere, the Mayor has seen independent evidence that shows the current proposals would result in an unacceptable negative impact on local residents.” https://www.itv.com/news/london/2023-11-20/mayor-rejects-plan-to-build-huge-vegas-style-sphere-in-london -

The family of the swiftie Ana Benevides, who passed away during the beginning of the Eras Tour in Rio Friday, has given an interview in which they say they haven't been contacted by the Tour organizers or Taylor's team; currently, the body of Ana is still in Rio, despite her family living in other state, because they don't have the money to transfer her body. A lot of people, including most swifties are currently very upset with the situation and believe Taylor's team should've contacted her family to help them out with the funeral. -
