If Swifties could make 89123712641 hate threads about Adele, Beyonce, Ariana, Katy, Dua, Rihanna, etc. in the past few years, why would we need a Megathread for Taylor? Is it another extension of her mediocre privilege?42 points

Doja signed a contract with him before the rape was made public, she was forced to work with him and she ditched him on her last album Kim Petras said Kesha lied and she supports Dr Luke and Britney's abusers too40 points

There is an alarming amount of uninformed and tone-deaf takes already in this thread from a certain fanbase, so let's clean some things up. 1. "Katy has nothing to do with what happened between Kesha and Dr. Luke" There is probably no person in the entire music industry that has more to do with it. Katy has known both Kesha and Dr. Luke for an almost equally long time. Kesha and Katy have known each other since before Kesha even debuted. There are pictures of them partying together in 2007, Kesha appeared in the IKAG video, Kesha has an unreleased song called "True Love" for which Katy has credits. Katy said: "I love my friend Kesha" in her 2017 Witness livestream. Katy testified in her deposition that she saw Kesha over a dozen times in her life. Her being a literal witness (pun intended) in the case merely comes on top of all this. 2. "Kesha selectively attacks Katy and not other artists" It should be self-explanatory that Katy Perry deciding to go back to Dr. Luke in 2024 is an entirely different scenario than the likes of Kim Petras, Latto, Lourdiz and god knows who else is currently working with him. Besides the obvious personal connection between Kesha and Katy, Katy was not just one of, but Dr. Luke's most successful (pop!) artist ever who used to work with him long before the lawsuit even began. 3. "Katy has shown solidarity with Kesha" At no point in time has Katy ever shown any kind of solidarity with Kesha whatsoever. Katy testified in her deposition that she decided not to work with Dr. Luke on Witness out of fear for her reputation and not out of solidarity with Kesha. Dr. Luke testified that Katy told him he'd have to "sit this one out". "This one" being Witness. In sum, everything points to Katy never actually wanting to stop working with Dr. Luke and especially not permanently. Her behavior stands in massive contrast to Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Adele and others who all have more or less directly supported Kesha in public or revealed their personal issues with Dr. Luke. Katy's deposition is filled with tone-deaf remarks like "Dr. Luke deserves to have a big ego, he has over 20 #1 songs" that are totally out of place in the context of a person you allegedly disapprove of. The fact that Katy gave interviews talking about her "healthy relationship" with Dr. Luke throughout the lawsuit for no apparent reason further undermines the "solidarity" narrative. 4. "Kesha settled the lawsuit, she has no business now shading Katy" This is perhaps the most twisted and insensitive talking point. First, it is wild to use a settlement against a defendant - who by default does not wish to be involved in a lawsuit, let alone go to trial. On a basic level, it is nonsensical to suggest Kesha deciding to settle a case she never wanted to defend herself against to begin with (let alone for nine years) instead of entering a massive trial against one of the most powerful people in Hollywood must prevent her from continuing to have an opinion on topics that are related to her and the lawsuit. Second, this notion completely ignores the fact that this lawsuit ended because Dr. Luke was smart enough to settle his own case after it became clear he would not win a jury trial. You can not spin a plaintiff realizing it's time to end a frivolous case into a defendant's loss. Third, it is quite extraordinary to suggest that a legal conclusion of the lawsuit somehow precludes any kind of moral decency standards for a person that has known both Kesha and Dr. Luke for over 15 years. A legal outcome does not dictate the rules for decent behavior. 5. "Kesha lied about Katy" This talking point should have been retired long ago, but apparently it's still necessary to point out that Kesha neither "invented" nor "spread" false rumors about Katy. Both Kesha and Lady Gaga testified that Interscope CEO John Janick told them that Dr. Luke raped Katy Perry (which @georgechxng could have known if they decided to actually familiarize themselves with the topic they are commenting about) which Kesha then referenced in a private text message to Lady Gaga. Said rumors not being true does not convert them into a lie absent proof of malice for which Dr. Luke has shown none and he possibly couldn't have done so in light of Lady Gaga's corroboration. Likewise, the word "spread" implies a new audience which does not exist in the case of a private 1:1 text message to one person who was already familiar with the story at hand. Dr. Luke himself created the new audience when he decided to include this issue in his amended complaint. You can say that Kesha shared a false statement she believed to be true, but she absolutely did not lie or invent fake stories and there is also no legal basis for such claims. 6. "Kesha recanted her statements" This remark is completely baseless, as Kesha has always maintained from the very beginning of the lawsuit and throughout her deposition that she was unconscious while Dr. Luke raped her because he had given her a "sober pill" in advance (the latter of which is referenced in documents as early as 2006). This is what she would have testified at the jury trial if it had taken place. Therefore, Kesha did not "recant" anything when she said she can not remember everything (not anything) about the night at issue in her final settlement statement.33 points

Anyway, to contribute sensibly: Taylor is not "the greatest" songwriter of any period of time. No one is. Art is subjective, but her writing undoubtedly connects with a multitude of people across many different countries, nationalities, genres, sexual/racial/age demographics. She is one of the most prolific songwriters of our time for that reason alone. Anyone trying to downplay that is arguing in bad faith and, more often than not, is unfamiliar with the parts of her catalogue that are actually respectable and above the average skill level of other songwriters (with notable exceptions being the literal poets of our generation like Lana, Lorde, Caroline, and the likes of which most other pop and country songwriters don't even hold a candle to.)32 points

We should increase viral thresholds for Taylor threads to 500k likes or something cause she goes "viral" every day. See when you cause this much discussion32 points

@Stunnah L*kasz G*ttwald is a rapist. He will go to his grave knowing he is a rapist. His family and loved ones will have to live with the shame knowing deep down he was a rapist. He will never be the beloved public figure he has always so desperately wanted to be because he is a sleazy drug dealer, a violent misogynist, and a rapist hated by countless women within the music industry.27 points

No disrespect, I feel like this says more about him than it does about the music scene. Yes, there are many artists who don't put in the effort to create a body of work, but if you can only name the most famous artist on Earth and the girl who performed at your tour, maybe you should get familiar with more new artists.24 points

some of you need to touch some grass. we all got it, you hate Katy endlessly, you hate the snippet, you hate the visuals. Maybe if that brick to the head smacked you hard enough your cross-eyes would align and you could read the court documents that state Kesha and Gaga were both told the rumor by a music executive. Kesha didn't make this up, didn't spread it, and the only reason the public knows about it is because Luke's camp leaked it to the press.23 points

…this has to be the dumbest (and cruelest) thing a pop girl has done in years. Her career has been dead since the beginning of the Trump administration, and now that people are interested in her again, she fucks her comeback up by working with Dr. Luke of all people? How did she think this was a smart idea?23 points

people pointing out her mediocre dancing, chart obsessed gimmicks or lack of speaking out about humanitarian issues does not equal vitriol and hatred… like what in the kim jung un is going on here. should we all instead blindly worship her for everything she does?22 points
