  1. Music critic, Kara Kennedy, mentions that other critics might be afraid to call out the reality due to Swifities vicionousness online. Believes Taylor to be basic and is puzzled by current success: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12397435/KARA-KENNEDY-OK-Im-ready-Swiftie-slap-Taylor-cringe-unoriginal-massively-overhyped-millions-cult-like-collective-trance-shake-off.html Thoughts?

  2. I still find it suspicious how this discourse only ever seems to revolve around women artists. At several points over the last decade, Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Ed Sheeran, Morgan Wallen, Drake and even Travis Scott have been just as oversaturated as Taylor Swift. They've dominated streaming, dominated the charts, courted massive and often frantic and chaotic fanbases and monopolized the pop cultural landscape, but you'd be hard pressed to see a reaction like this. I've noticed that on Reddit and Instagram, Taylor Swift has become synonymous with the word "overrated", and you can't even go into an Eras tour video without comments from mostly straight men seemingly angry about people, particularly women, enjoying Taylor and her music. It's just like Beyoncé after ST, when she began gaining acclaim and all of a sudden it became cool to call her overrated and overhyped. Journalists are afraid of Taylor Swift fans yet you've had straight men cause literal riots, looting and property destruction over their favorite sports teams, not to mention the general toxicity of both Hip-hop and Rock music fans. Country music fans today are basically in competition for who can send the next racist to #1 on the charts. Where are the articles about these fanbases? Are they not even scarier? It's ridiculous truly and it's why I don't even bother. People are always going to look down on entertainers that women (and gay men) enjoy and this is the result of that. It's stupid how our society will always have this energy for women entertainers, who on average put in 3x the work of their male counterparts, but will turn around and be radio silent about the men. Get a life

  3. Thats precisely what she addresses in the article tho But when it comes to Swift, I have never understood it. And as her fandom grows ever more deranged, as the media flocks to her side en masse, publishing breathless op-eds about how she is single handedly fending off the US recession with a tour that is predicted to fetch a record-busting $1.4 billion, or how her massing fans have caused literal ‘earthquakes’ at stadium venues (fact check: these tremors are a common occurrence with big stadium tours and sports games), I can’t help but think that this deification of Taylor Swift is neither healthy – nor deserved. To me, Taylor Swift is just fine. And there will be plenty more like her. But somehow the universe is in a collective trance, unable to admit it. If you read the New York Times this week, you will have seen a dance critic call Taylor’s moves ‘simple and unoriginal’, ‘stiff and awkward’, ‘imprecise and physically uncommitted’, yet still reach the conclusion that this parade of gawkiness is ‘powerful’, and ‘exceptionally effective’. 4. "Critics afraid of backlash from Swifities" This part is true tho. Look at how BTS is getting acclaim too with their annoying music

  5. How is the biggest artist this century with one of the biggest tours in history "overhyped"? I'll keep it cute but there are certainly other artists who are overhyped more than Taylor. She has the GP success along with the acclaim.

  6. The crux of her argument later in the article seems to be that because she isn't snorting coke on the weekends, having a schizophrenic breakdown or flashing the paparazzi, she's boring and therefore not deserving of her popularity. This is why artists are all ****** up, because the media loves a trainwreck but can't stand anyone that actually might have their head on straight. They can't fathom that perhaps she's just normal, there HAS to be something hiding behind the curtain. There's an argument to be had about critics being afraid to be honest about certain artists' music due to potential backlash but this is just a bizarre way to make your point.

  14. I've read the whole article. The parts where she's criticizing and saying she doesn't get it is fine, but there are parts that are just so problematic. So the entire reason she doesn't like Taylor is because she doesn't have anything to hate her for? Also, as if any mainstream artist is not a character, please. So she needs an artist to have a breakdown to be obsessed with them? Like am I the only one finding that deranged? The entire article reads like an ATRL meltdown ngl

  18. Anyway, the "afraid of backlash" thing applies to every big artist with a fanbase. Let's be rational here. The same thing could be said about any K-Pop act, or big western act. Let's not pretend as if Twitter wouldn't drag them to hell and back/try to paint a random reviewer as a racist if they give a bad review about Beyoncé, or as if K-Poppies wouldnt try to doxx a reviewer/paint him as xenophobic for giving a panned review to their favorite artist. The "backlash" problem is not exclusive to Taylor Swift in any way, so this article is funny.

  30. No she didn't. She shared a pressed opinion about an artist she doesn't like. The writers who compared Taylor to MJ and Madonna were talking about her popularity and her current dominance in the industry. They shared facts. Taylor is factually shaping up to be the biggest solo artist since MJ and Madonna when you look at any objective metrics. Knowing you, I can see why you would like the pressed opinion over the facts, tho

  33. You shouldn’t compare them anyway because Beyoncé is 8 years older, debuted like 9 years sooner, and is a blatantly black woman in an unwelcoming white America. Beyoncé imo is more of an anomaly than Taylor because Bey is and has been compared to Michael, Janet, Mariah, Whitney, Prince, Diana, Tina, Celine, Ashanti, Britney, Usher, Timberlake, Christina, Ciara, Rihanna, Taylor, Adele, Ariana, SZA. People even have the audacity to compare her to Summer ******* Walker because of sales. The only thing unique about Taylor is the media dominance, and that’s not surprising. What is surprising is Beyoncé filling stadiums to the brim in her 26th year after a semi break from solo material and after releasing an album with no visuals after defining herself as a visuals artist.
