Agree with both of your worsts here. Swalla is dreadful, and it really does seem like Derulo's foremost skills now are writing terrible hooks and singing cringeworthily about sexual intercourse.

Walk On Water was such a massive disappointment for me. Not engaging at all, with a really awkward chorus.

clean bandit – rockabye (featuring anne-marie, sean paul)

Clean_Bandit_-_Rockabye_(feat._Sean_Paul_&_Anne-Marie).png

this song absolutely slams.

the song kicks off with something that was quite trendy for late 2016; dancehall beat with a "feat. sean paul". one thing that you know instantly set it different was how they basically always infuse classical music into their songs, creating a very bubbly balance of EDM and classical.

but every single one of those things are slightly made odd. the beat is super reminiscent of ace of base, most specifically their worldwide hit "all that she wants". there's something about those synths, man.

then anne-marie comes in with a serious tone, more serious than the instrumental leads people to believe. she croons about a single mother with a missing father, who is just getting by to allow her son a good and decent life, through working as a pole dancer someplace "by the water".

sean paul blares in with a "DAILY STRUGGLE!" which is honestly hilarious but in a good way. he comes in with a dope dancehall-y verse, which truly pleased my inner jamaican tbh.

everything about this song is weird but that's why i love it. the no-vocals drop is pretty new for clean bandit; a lot of their singles do feature a slight drop of some sort, but there's always some lyrics over it. this time, there's no vocals and it's just pure break for two bars.

this song is absurd and i love every second of it.

frank ocean – chanel

724b477cac0ff58e63bdd0b8317b608f.1000x1000x1.jpg

i truly don't know why I dug this song so much this year, but it truly is good. I really dig the weird mall aesthetic beat with those "shuffling" sounds, and I truly dig the lyrics about his sexual identity and whatnot.

like, and his vocals still sound great too. the song sounds GREAT and… just UGH. slayed.

there's something about this song that gives it a bit of a "mystic" feel to it, a "je ne sais quoi" to it. the way how he flaunts his pan?/bi?-sexuality is great too, especially coming for a black bi teen like me. there is a lack of bi folks in the entertainment industry and seeing frank ocean just being open about it is refreshing, and just simply great.

the way how he switches up his vocals in the second half of the song at about two minutes in is a bit captivating, like, it holds over the song in a good way. it just sounds good.

iggy azalea – "mo bounce"

Iggy-azalea-mo-bounce.jpg

the fall of iggy azalea was truly something, huh?

iggy came back from her cave after the disappointment that was "team" in 2016 with this… electro-hop… thing.

the song is just straight annoying, first of all. the fauxccent she puts on when she raps really doesn't help with the hook, which is basically "mo bounce" repeated ad nauseum. it actually gets difficult to listen to the more you listen to it. the word "bounce" is repeated 133 times, including the "mo bounce" and all of the "bounce"s after the first few "mo bounce"s.

the beat is just there and is quite… well, it's super boring.

like, how do you even make a party song about shaking your ass so empty and at the same time obnoxious? the production is a super lazy attempt at making some kind of "trap" EDM beat. it doesn't sound good at all. you can't even shake your ass to this song, yet it's so clear that with the lyrics and the whole atmosphere of this song, it wants to be a crunk/party rap song.

sorry, but iggy needs to re-do almost everything after the The New Classic era, because everything right now doesn't sound good. it doesn't help that def jam basically shelved her whole "digital distortion" era either.

bleachers – don't take the money

Bleachers_Don't_Take_the_Money.jpg

I am an absolute sucker for jack antonoff's music when it comes to his project bleachers.

this song is particularly so good in a way that I honestly don't know how to word it. it's a perfect amount of faux-80's aesthetic/80's nostalgia stuff, that's basically become the standard sound of bleachers, with hints of lorde all over the track, but in a way that it doesn't sound like it's totally her track. it's great.

the hook is booming and anthemic, with jack's phrase "don't take the money" constantly repeating throughout the track. the phrase meaning, as per jack himself, don't cop out; it's not literally about not taking money.

and then there's lorde's addition to the track, with the guest vocals!! I was so thrilled to hear her on this track, especially with the melodrama era kicking off. it was great hearing her.

I really really cannot wait to hear what bleachers have in store for their next album. I wonder if they'll try out a different sound this time, something that's not their signature 80's bruce springsteen'd sound.

childish gambino – redbone

Awaken,_My_Love!.jpg

there's something about this song that simply captivates me…

it's refreshing to hear a straight up psychedelic neo-soul piece become mainstream, especially to hear it be featured in a mainstream film ("get out").

there's something extremely sensual about this song. the quirky neo-soul production on this track is oddly soothing. the lead guitar has that "womp womp" thing that truly catches my ear.

and childish gambino shows a very high pitch, on this song, much higher than everyone thought he could reach. no-one knew that he was capable of such a high-pitched and soulful R&B-soul voice. even genius was shocked; they created a video showing how redbone would sound like if the vocals were to be "pitched down", as if they were pitched up in the first place. and that's what i love about this song. it's a mindf*ck, from the psychedelic production to the quirky vocals.

and the lyrics are great too. the hook is actually quite catchy. after a few listens, you will probably find yourself humming the rhythm to this song.

i think this song is probably best enjoyed with a side of peanut butter chocolate cake. preferably kool-aid as the bev.

migos – bad & boujee (featuring lil uzi vert)

1200x630bb.jpg

this song absolutely is a bona fide banger. the thing about this song is that it kicks off with a hook so catchy that you will find yourself rapping, humming, or tapping along to it after the first listen. and just after that, you hear one-liner after one-liner and bar after bar, which truly makes this song even more of a banger.

also, there is no one flow! each artist that stars on this track has their own flow and delivery which is truly great. offset kicks in with the hook, and then comes in with a nice slick rick reference ("rick the ruler, diamonds cooler") and a pretty cool rhyming scheme:

I tell that bitch to come come for me
I swear these n*ggas is under me
They hate and the devil keep jumpin' me
Bankrolls on me keep me company

i mean, call me a simpleton if you want if you're some kind of rap elitist about these things and how the triplet flow is "ruining hip-hop", but i really think those rhymes are actually quite cool. offset's verse is truly one of his best, hands down.

then there's also quavo's verse which also carries a bit of a similar rhyming scheme:

Still be playin' with pots and pans, call me Quavo Ratatouille
Run with that sack, call me Boobie
When I'm on stage show me boobies
Ice on my neck, I'm the coolest
Hop out the suicide with the Uzi

a bit simpler, but i truly dig it still.

there's a reason why this song is actually great for a mainstream trap song: the song is largely verse. a lot of mainstream trap songs rely on the hook, but the great thing about this song is that the hook isn't relied on. this sound would honestly be just as good if one were to just cut the hook out. i mean that's probably just my taste; I tried this in audacity and it sounded fine to me.

this is a song that works the best when you just chill and don't take it so seriously.

also, can we please give some praise to the cover art? it fits this song so well.

owl city – all my friends

6729981.jpg

seeing owl city release this song was particularly disappointing, especially because i actually like ocean eyes and midsummer station.

the thing about this song isn't even that it's outright godawful compared to some of the other songs on this list, it's just straight boring and droning.

the production reeks late 00's DCOM OST. the hook is … really not good. and so aren't the lyrics. there's that weird fake flow thing that a lot of white artists do, like ed sheeran and taylor swift.

some of the lyrics are straight sh*t but very laughable:

It's been this way from the start
It's like they're always trying to tear us apart
But we will stand strong, stand true
And everybody's gonna watch what we do
And they'll be awestruck saying 'ah shucks'
They either got real good or they got real good luck

like, it's actually slightly difficult to make fun of these lyrics because you can't help but feel as if owl city was just f*cking around. it's a bit hilarious to be honest. but it really is quite sh*t, regardless. nothing as bad as another track that is coming soon on this list, though.

it's even hilarious down to the cover art, which is also hilarious for the album it comes from, cinematic. which, by the way, why is he releasing the song now when it comes out in june?

let's just say i would rather listen to "fireflies" than this.

neal mccoy – take a knee my ass

51z1xn89UnL._SS500.jpg

kneel mccoy

blackbear – do re mi

t340788528-b1252860472_s400.jpg

a lazy, boring, uninspired sexist piece of breakup music, "do re mi" is truly something that one probably doesn't want to listen to.

the song's beat is a bit serious for seemingly no reason. no reason because of these damn lyrics:

Yeah, if I could go back to the day we met
I probably would just stay in bed
You run your mouth all over town

[…]

And you got me thinking lately
Bitch, you crazy
And nothing's ever good enough

[…]

You never had to buy yourself a drink
'Cause everybody want to tap that ass sometime

reading the entire lyrics of the song, you would probably think that blackbear is in the wrong and deserves all of this. because, honestly, some of the sh*t he says really makes me think that he probably did something seriously f*cked up and is just acting like he's not in the wrong. like, seriously? "'cause everybody want to tap that ass sometime"? he sounds like a dudebro sleazebag.

not only that, but the song literally features a sound of glass breaking. like, you'd think this song is probably a joke but it really isn't. it's actual sh*t. the gucci mane remix really isn't any better neither. this is the actual bane of soundcloud PBR&B. sh*tty sexist breakup lyrics with a piss-poor beat that tries too hard to be actually serious, with boring vocals that seriously lack character.
