the xx – on hold

 

 

it's so easy for one to forget about this absolute masterpiece of the dream pop genre because its album came out so early in the year.

 

a song with great production, borrowing from melancholia and euphoria, it croons about teen love and infatuation, falling in and out of love, the misery OF falling in and out of love, loss… and I know some people found it funny that they sampled a hall & oates song in the hook, but the vocal chops in the sample make it sound even good. had no idea it was even hall & oates until someone told me…

 

it's emotional, it's melancholy, it's happily sad, it's a song that has a good enough beat that one could just jam and dance to. this song deserved way more recognition, but I'm happy that the xx are one of the more popular indie acts. their music is great and deserves recognition. and so does this song. "on hold" is a masterpiece.

 

portugal. the man – feel it still

 

 

I'm putting this here because this song is legit amazing. from the themes of resistance (see the music video, they actually put up a site where they pointed out "tools of resistance" found in the video) to the clean and funky production, to the unique and quirky voice of john gourley à la childish gambino's "redbone", this song is definitely a psychedelic pop/funk rock tune that will have me jiving in my head for months and years to come.

 

 

missio – middle fingers

 

 

let me just be short and straight to the point. this is the song:

 

[something singer doesn't like]
[something singer doesn't like], middle fingers in the air (this whole stanza x2)

i'll just keep on throwing middle fingers in the air (x2)

 

repeat for like four more times and you get this song.

 

it's pretentious hipster garbage like this song that gives alternative music its "2 kool 4 u mainstream nerdz!!11" rep. the fact it was even #9 on the billboard alternative songs chart is a tragedy itself.

 

not only are the lyrics ridiculously bitchy, the singer sounds bitchy as well.

like, there's not even that much to mock because the song is extremely barebones itself. it's just bad, boring, and plain bitchy and pretentious.

 

alternative music does NOT need songs like this.

 

machine gun kelly & camila cabello – bad things

 

 

the fact they even interpolated fastball is bold in itself.

 

not sure if it's the cliché vague lyrics about BDSM and "naughtiness", camila going flat in the middle of the first part of the hook ("i only wanna do bad things to you"), or the boring production that makes me roll my eyes.

 

indeed camila is more than "out of her head"; she sounds like she's out of air during that hook with how her voice quickly becomes whispery as soon as the hook kicks in. it sounds like MGK just dialled camila for a feature on his song and she just legit phoned it in while sounding seriously uninterested.

 

then there's how they basically made BDSM (more specifically dominance and sadomasochism) more palatable and palpable for a mainstream radio-listening, music-buying audience. "bad things"? what are "bad things", exactly? whipping? i guess MGK gives us a hint with the "scars on my back" line, but that still doesn't really … help. the mainstream music scene is so particularly weird about talking about unorthodox ways of achieving pleasure sexually, that they literally run around and get lost with what they even wanna talk about 90% of the time like in this song. i can only recall rihanna and madonna actually being upfront about it.

 

the production is quite droning, to say the least. there isn't much going on asides from a FL studio demo loop of some soundcloud producer's profile. i guess it's supposed to sound "cool" or something.

 

about "cool", it's literally the opposite of what MGK sounds like on this track. his verses are so… boring. everything about this song is straight boring. it's a song that tries to be cool and "sexual" and chill at the same time but it really falls flat on it.
