Let 'Em Talk sounds fresh out of a mid 2000s teen movie, and it makes me sick. I was never a fan of pop rock and tbh I never will be.

"praying" made me cry the first time i heard it, and it's part of a great collection of songs from selt-empowerment anthem "let 'em talk" to female-empowerment anthem "woman" to twangy, role-reversed cheater anthem "hunt you down." i love this record (but i can't, for the life of me, get into "boogie feet"). favorites: praying, let 'em talk, woman, hunt you down, spaceship — unfavorites: boogie feet 29. THE WAR ON DRUGS - 'A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING' i haven't spent nearly enough time with this album, which is why it's relatively low on my chart, but every time i turn it on, i wish i had listened to it more. even the nearly-twelve-minute "thinking of a place" is entirely justified (and—side note—it sounds like the xx's "seasons run"). i love "strangest thing" (which sounds like bear's den's "red earth & pouring rain"). favorites: strangest thing, pain — unfavorites: none 28. FLEET FOXES - 'CRACK-UP' similar to TWOD, i have neglected this album, which i feel terrible about. but "if you need to, keep time on me" and "third of may" are excellent. the rest is, too, i just don't have anything to say about them yet. favorites: if you need to, keep time on me; third of may / odaigahara — unfavorites: none 27. KELLY CLARKSON - 'MEANING OF LIFE' kelly clarkson has finally made an album on which she sounds like she means every word. she seems happier, lately, talking about moving on to a new record label and embracing her size, and this album is full of that positivity: the sparkly "love so soft"; the politically-empowered "go high"; the snappy comeback for a former lover, "medicine." this soul-pop area suits her voice well: she's able to showcase her range in ways she never has before, and display vulnerability with emotive power; "move you" is an affecting song about wanting to make a lover feel what she feels. that being said, there are a few duds, like "don't you pretend," which feels empty, and "whole lotta woman," a bit too kitschy for my taste. favorites: love so soft, heat, medicine, would you call that love, move you, go high — unfavorites: whole lotta woman, don't you pretend, a minute 26. BEACH HOUSE - 'B-SIDES AND RARITIES' beach house is f***ing amazing. that being said, this collection includes a lot of b-sides and very few rarities: if you're a beach house fan, odds are you've heard all of these songs before. (i had made a b-sides collection of my own that included all of the older songs.) the included rarities are great: "chariot," which somehow didn't make depression cherry but is better than at least 7 of the songs on that album, sounds like driving at night with the windows down. i might like the excellent cough syrup remix of "10 mile stereo" better than the original, tbh. favorites: chariot, 10 mile stereo remix, saturn song — unfavorites: none lemme bump

Lazuli Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 This set is SNATCHED (but tbh I don't really care that much for the B-Sides) Crack-Up was okay, a bit tough to get into tho Meaning Of Life is Kelly at her peak ADU is nice, has some of TWOD's best Rainbow is just perfect
Ewan Chaos Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 Rainbow is good! I love your picks... but I love Boogie Feet :/ That A War on Drugs record is AWESOME, though my favorites are a bit different.

ultraviolence.xx Posted December 19, 2017 Author Posted December 19, 2017 25. FEIST - 'PLEASURE' @Clueless HA IMPACT! if i had listened to this more than four times since the good sis told me about it, it'd probably be higher on my list, but alas, here it is. i love how this album doesn't sound like anyone else: just good old f***ing feist. i stan. favorites: so far, any party — unfavorites: none yet 24. HAIM - 'SOMETHING TO TELL YOU' i never thought the haim sisters were going to be able to top their debut. the good news is, i was right! they didn't. but something to tell you still contains a hearty assortment of upbeat, '70s-drenched jams, such as effervescent lead single "want you back," which never fails to brighten my mood, and the title track, which feels like it soundtracks a '70s film in all the best ways. while we didn't exactly get another "my song 5" like i had been hoping, the funky, minimalistic "walking away" breaks the pace in a similar way. some songs, like "little of your love," feel a bit too derivative, like haim trying to recreate haim, but they're still enjoyable. the only song here i expressly dislike is "found it in silence." delete it, faT. favorites: want you back, walking away, something to tell you, you never knew — unfavorites: found it in silence 23. SZA - 'CTRL' giiiiiiiirl!!! this album got me through some ****, let me tell you. my favorite track is the sadly-underrated "prom," which gets me from 0 to 100 in my feelings with just the three-note percussion intro. brings me right back to that ****ty heartbreak! my other absolute-favorite is "anything," with that entrancing synth pattern in the background and that catchy, relatable chant of "do-do you even know i'm alive?" at the end that blossoms into harmonies. "garden" is also amazing. relatable queen! favorites: prom, anything, garden (say it like dat), drew barrymore — unfavorites: doves in the wind (say "*****" one more time, i dare you) 22. KELELA - 'TAKE ME APART' kelela is amazing. every time i put this album on, i get slapped in the face with quality. and while nothing here is as immediate and dopaminergic as "the high," my all-time favorite kelela song, everything here is great. i particularly love the sexy-af "blue light" and the shuffling "waitin." ("saw you there and it ****ed me up," she says on "waitin." same, kelela. same.) favorites: waitin, blue light, onanon, frontline, take me apart, ... — unfavorites: none 21. SHANNON LAY - 'LIVING WATER' i don't know how she does it, tbh. this album, for the most part, is only her voice and an acoustic guitar, but these songs feel so full and spacious and powerful. one day i was sad (*pretends to be shocked*) and i put "orange tree" on repeat and cried for 45 minutes and then passed out and got the best sleep of my life. it was a healing experience, tbh. favorites: orange tree, the search for gold, orange tree, home, orange tree — unfavorites: none
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 19, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 19, 2017 I don't like boring sad girl music except Mitski but I'll try that girl out. CTRL, Take Me Apart are good R&B album.s Pleasure isn't that good IMO but one of it songs is perfect.
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 19, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 19, 2017 yaas great update. I liked Feist's album a bit though I never went back to it after the first listen. Also Haim, sza, kelela with that 1, 2, 3 punch
