ultraviolence.xx Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 TOP 10 i've got 111 songs, which is a sh!t-ton of songs, so i'm going to be updating in batches of 13 for 7 days, which leaves a top 20 to be posted in 3-4 days. for the first 91 songs, i'm giving myself a one-sentence limit; the top 20 will be more verbose. – – – 10. SUFJAN STEVENS - "VISIONS OF GIDEON" sufjan has written a lot of sad songs, but this has to be one of his saddest, and it hasn't left me since the first time i listened to it. even outside the context of the film it's in, the song has something devastating about it—but beautiful in its devastation, to where i can't stop listening. something about that repetition of "is it a video?" is so haunting, and the way the melody climbs into his head voice is stunning. one of my favorite sufjan songs of all time, and one of my favorite songs of the year. – – – 9. LANA DEL REY/RADIOHEAD - "GET FREE" this song, quite simply, stuns me. the lyricism is so ahead of its time for lana, brilliantly positive and sophisticated. i love the surf-rock drums that come in at the chorus, and the ambient outro makes me feel like nothing will ever be bad again, which is a very dangerous/oblivious thing to believe but cuTe regardless. – – – 8. THE XX - "REPLICA" is this the xx's best song? maybe, maybe. the lyrics are full of the anxiety of becoming our parents, the drums smash, the guitars are gorgeous, and the breakdown with the steel drums is absolutely incredible. they didn't play this when i saw them and i was PISSED. – – – 7. THE NATIONAL - "DARK SIDE OF THE GYM" this is the most romantic song i have ever heard. – – – 6. SLOWDIVE - "SLOMO" seven minutes of dreamy shoegaze heaven washing over me. what more could i want? – – – 5. LANA DEL REY/A$AP ROCKY/PLAYBOI CARTI - "SUMMER BUMMER" THIS IS *THAT* TRAP SONG. i've been wanting lana to make a song like this since . . . well, basically ever. boi-1da is the exact ideal collaborator. carti is inessential, but A$AP's verse is good, and lana's flow is sensational. i listen to both the album version and the radio version interchangeably, because they both have their strengths, but this, honestly, is that song. – – – 4. LANA DEL REY - "BEST AMERICAN RECORD" this is one of lana's best songs ever—the fact that it was scrapped from the album has me livid. i can't watch the "white mustang" video without thinking that it was originally meant for this song. – – – 3. THE NATIONAL - "GUILTY PARTY" from the first time i heard this, i knew i was on to something special, something that felt life-changing. i was reading a book at the time, and i listened to this song on repeat for the entire duration of time it took me to finish that book. this song now reminds me of that book, and that book of this song. this tale of a relationship on the brink of destruction—and all the small images the national uses to convey this, and what they sum to—steals my breath. – – – 2. BIG THIEF - "SHARK SMILE" this nearly stole the #1 spot. the story of a car crash that kills one person and spares the other, "shark smile" is evocative in its imagery, beautifully propulsive in its sonic elements, and engaging every step of the way. – – – 1. LANA DEL REY - "LOVE" MY UNDENIABLE SONG OF 2017 play count: 987 – – – thanks for tuning in to my best of 2017 lists!

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted January 11, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted January 11, 2018 Lana Del Reydiohead did that an incredible and hopeful and perfect closer Replica kinda is The xx's best song huh Summer Bummer > Summer Bummber but either way whatta song and one deserving of its top five place maybe I should watch the WM video on silent with BAR playing over it. it'd be my first time watching the video and it'd feel right cough cough ew
Pink Matter Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Great top 10 Lana snappedT on Get Free. SB, BAR, and Love are excellent too! The xx and Slowdive are great too and Dark Side of the Gym is one of the few songs I remember liking a lot from The National's album. Great lists sis
Eeveelution Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Whew, I like every song in your top 10, slay a bit sis.
Lazuli Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Visions of Gideon The better CMBYN song! Lana Del Rey/Radiohead Replica is so good Slomo Dark Side of the Gym is sweet but thank god the superior Guilty Party is higher Never fails to make me weep Groupie Love > Summer Bummer Shark Smile is a cute pick but it's not amongst my favourite from the album Love I guess I couldn't have expected any other songs to be the winner!
