ultraviolence.xx Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 UPDATE #6 i've got 111 songs, which is a sh!t-ton of songs, so i'm going to be updating in batches of 13 for 7 days, which leaves a top 20 to be posted in 3-4 days. for the first 91 songs, i'm giving myself a one-sentence limit; the top 20 will be more verbose. – – – 46. LONDON GRAMMAR - "BONES OF RIBBON" hannah says she wishes the drums were half a decibel lower, but i think the song is perfect the way it is—that melody cascading over the chorus in her head voice is gorgeous. – – – 45. CASHMERE CAT/ARIANA GRANDE - "QUIT" ariana grande, ladies and gentlemen: the one person who can sing a sia song and not sound exactly like sia (until sia's actual vocals come in), though her vowels are sia-dark, i'll give her that. i love the way the anthemic, powerful chorus builds to an anti-drop, and the soft reprise of an ending. – – – 44. MUNA - "EVERYTHING" this song ****s me up, from the emo rock feel to the uber-relatable lyrics—i genuinely get a bit sick to my stomach when it comes on because i associate it with such dark times. – – – 43. LONDON GRAMMAR - "WILD EYED" my favorite thing about this song is the major-keyed verses giving way to minor-keyed choruses, hannah's deep vocals giving way to soaring notes. – – – 42. THE XX - "I DARE YOU" this song is so sweet and romantic and wonderful. it feels like the sister of on hold. – – – 41. THE XX - "ON HOLD" i remember the exact day this song dropped and all the different places i listened to it—even what i was reading that day. – – – 40. LORDE - "PERFECT PLACES" this song dropped when i was about to graduate, so that triumphant sound carries a truckload of nostalgia and emotion for me. i listened to this song on repeat when i was walking to get my cap and gown, not ready to leave school. deep sh*t. – – – 39. TAYLOR SWIFT - "CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT" this song has some of reputation's best lyrics and, in my opinion, conjures the best mood: quietly bittersweet, warm, hopeful. – – – 38. SUSANNE SUNDFØR - "UNDERCOVER" this was the first song i heard from ms. sundfør, and i am so glad for it: i particularly love her vibrato and the massive build the song takes on. – – – 37. KENDRICK LAMAR - "DNA." pretty sure the world stopped when kendrick dropped DAMN. and danced to this song for 24 hours. – – – 36. BØRNS - "I DON'T WANT U BACK" HAIM WHO? – – – 35. HAIM - "WANT YOU BACK" BØRNS WHO? – – – 34. ST. VINCENT - "SMOKING SECTION" this song is very dark, lyrically poignant, a great ending to the album.

ultraviolence.xx Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 UPDATE #7 i've got 111 songs, which is a sh!t-ton of songs, so i'm going to be updating in batches of 13 for 7 days, which leaves a top 20 to be posted in 3-4 days. for the first 91 songs, i'm giving myself a one-sentence limit; the top 20 will be more verbose. – – – 33. JHENÉ AIKO - "NEW BALANCE" this song got me through some sh*t; it never fails to put me in a great, relaxed, calm mood, and i honestly don't know how. – – – 32. BIG THIEF - "BLACK DIAMONDS" i love the story adrienne tells here, and the way it just kind of peters out at the end—it feels very real, very accurate. – – – 31. JESSIE J - "THINK ABOUT THAT" ms. j did THAT with this song: i love the minimalist instrumentation, the honestly and vulnerability in the lyricism, the restraint in the vocal performance. – – – 30. MUNA - "AROUND U" this song brilliantly captures the pain of hindsight, that fire-fade sensation that feels like a huge loss. – – – 29. BIG THIEF - "WATERING" "watering," with all its minor-2 chords, conveys exactly the skin-crawling sense that adrienne details in her lyrics. – – – 28. KESHA - "PRAYING" if you told me a few years ago that a kesha song would make me blubber like a baby, i would not have believed you, but, alas, here we are. – – – 27. LORDE - "HARD FEELINGS" this is a masterpiece. the lyrics are so specific yet so generalizable, the production so subtly gorgeous, with those quick gasps of breath filling the stereo field. – – – 26. ST. VINCENT - "SLOW DISCO" SLIP MY HAND FROM YOUR HAND / LEAVE YOU DANCING WITH A GHOST – – – 25. SZA - "PROM" this is one of those songs i have a ridiculous love for, an oddly close relationship with, and i can't for the life of me pinpoint why. – – – 24. TAYLOR SWIFT - "LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO" i smell drags. but, regardless, this is undoubtedly one of my favorite songs of the year: from that first relentless slam of bass after the twinkly intro, i knew this song had staying power, and that's true; it's gotten over 400 plays from me. – – – 23. BIG THIEF - "COMA" you can wake up now, momma... from your protective coma... – – – 22. LANA DEL REY/SEAN ONO LENNON - "TOMORROW NEVER CAME" beautifully retro. perfection. – – – 21. THE NATIONAL - "NOBODY ELSE WILL BE THERE" i think about half of my sleep well beast album review was me praising this song to the high heavens, but it's all true: this song is amazing, and wonderful, and wonderfully amazing, and amazingly wonderful.

ultraviolence.xx Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 TOP 20 i've got 111 songs, which is a sh!t-ton of songs, so i'm going to be updating in batches of 13 for 7 days, which leaves a top 20 to be posted in 3-4 days. for the first 91 songs, i'm giving myself a one-sentence limit; the top 20 will be more verbose. – – – 20. JESSIE WARE - "YOUR DOMINO" no song this year (or any year, probably) puts me in a better mood. this song is positively effervescent, with doubled hand-claps, soft, bright pulses of synths, and the catchiest whoa-oa-oa chorus in recent memory. every time i listen to this, i am grooving by the end. – – – 19. KYLE DIXON & MICHAEL STEIN - "EULOGY" this song, from the stranger things 2 score, is brilliant. synth chords waver in the background; the lead trembles like a human voice, powerfully emotive. the first time this played in the show, a character was crying in the bathroom, and i found myself crying too. – – – 18. SUSANNE SUNDFØR - "REINCARNATION" the first two lines of this song never fail to choke me up. her delivery is wonderful: "do you believe in reincarnation? 'cause i thought i saw your soul..." beautiful, simple, poignant. – – – 17. MUNA - "END OF DESIRE" i can't believe it now, but this was one of my least favorites on the album when it first came out. (i blame the sequencing.) since then, it has grown on me like crazy, and now i love it like a child: the unique chord structures of the vocoder and synths, the religious metaphors and gorgeous lyrics ("turn your head to the side / hold your gaze against mine / and there it is: the mark of the divine"), the soft strength the song has. utterly irresistible. – – – 16. JESSIE WARE - "FIRST TIME" this song has a very powerful nostalgic element to it—i think it's those electric guitar riffs in the chorus that feel like they're from another decade. absolutely gorgeous, from the choirs to the melody to the stirring drums to the desperation in the vocals. – – – 15. BJÖRK - "THE GATE" this is the first björk song i ever heard, and it's safe to say i'm here to stay. i love the beautiful imagery in the verses and the hint of trouble in the instrumental, and then when the low end slams in the refrain, i'm hooked. one of the most sonically intriguing songs i've ever heard that keeps me coming back. – – – 14. DAUGHTER - "A HOLE IN THE EARTH" this is one of my favorite daughter songs. i love the commanding chorus vocals, that feel in turn brightly nostalgic ("you have buried childish qualities") and powerfully vulnerable ("i have many destructive qualities / friend, make sense of me"). that ending, "i have so much hurt inside me," never fails to rouse me to fever. – – – 13. MUNA - "CRYING ON THE BATHROOM FLOOR" this song was my introduction to muna, right after it dropped. it's a powerful tale of domestic abuse, with a sonically addictive, bass-heavy bent. that bass line gets me moving and almost distracts me enough to forget what the song is about. (also, that pre-chorus is straight-up heaven, and i'm mad they only used it once in the song.) – – – 12. LORDE - "GREEN LIGHT" this song was an Event. the day it came out, from the first listen, i was hooked: the chorus had the immediacy of a robyn song, while the verses brought us out of that for a moment into a weirder, different-keyed space. i listened to this song in the shower, on the way to my classes, in the café (and then, weirdly enough, the song came on at the cafe, and i had to hold in my excitement), at home dancing around my room like a lunatic, et cetera. that chorus is one of the most hooky, triumphant moments of 2017's music. – – – 11. SLOWDIVE - "FALLING ASHES" i talked about this song a lot in the album-write up, because it's truly special, but i'll do it again. yes, it does sound a little bit like radiohead's "daydreaming," but radiohead can go **** themselves. (let it be known that i made this comment in the album write-up before radiohead sued lana, and it still stands. psychic legend? clairvoyant icon?) it's an 8-minute song that doesn't feel a second too long, with a piano riff that plays the entire time and doesn't once grow tiresome. the ethereal chorus vocals, "thinking about love / thinking about love," and that last verse vocal, "you were the grace of my night," sends me straight to heaven. – – –
