ultraviolence.xx Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) 15. TAYLOR SWIFT - 'REPUTATION' "drag me if you want, yeah, drag me if you want to!" OK, i know i'm asking for some severe lashings here (and that's OK). but reputation is undeniably one of my most listened-to albums of the year, full of reinventions, of acknowledgments: "maybe i got mine," she admits about her karma on lead single "look what you made me do," acknowledging her guilt in the most sidesteppy, the most taylor-swift-y, way possible, "but you'll all get yours!" say what you want about t-swizzle—call her what you want, if you will—but she knows how to write a pop song, and that is crystal clear here. from the undeniably catchy lead single that everyone loves to hate to the 2008-xtina synthpop banger "i did something bad" to the hozier-lite "don't blame me," these songs have me singing the f*** ALONG. my favorite track changes by the hour, but currently it's "delicate," particularly the moment when those drums come in at the beginning of the second verse. tell me that isn't magic. tell me taylor isn't good what she does. i could write an essay about this album but i've got 4 more to do today so i think the f*** not you trick ass bitch. favorites: look what you made me do, call it what you want, delicate, so it goes..., don't blame me, i did something bad — unfavorites: king of my heart, gorgeous Edited December 21, 2017 by ultraviolence.xx

ultraviolence.xx Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 14. MUNA - 'ABOUT U' aside from the "u"s that decorate the tracklisting and give this the feel of a mid-2000s punk outfit, about u is a stunningly solid pop album. not only is it emotionally poignant, timely, and danceable at the same time; it's also well-crafted. lead single "i know a place" details a(n idealistic) safe space where everyone can "lay down their weapons" and love freely. "loudspeaker" lends empowerment to victims of sexual assault, allows them to free themselves of the blame. "if u love me now" paints a haunting, humanistic picture of depression and suicidality. the deliciously dark, ominously clubby "crying on the bathroom floor" details the horrors of an abusive relationship. what i love about MUNA is that, on top of making catchy, fun music, they're dealing with darker themes not often addressed in pop music—mental illness, abuse, power—and normalizing the struggles that accompany them. that being said, my favorites of MUNA's songs are the ones that address just straight-up bad luck with love. "around u" denotes the feeling of looking back on a relationship after considerable time has passed and feeling the slight sparks in your memory. "something massive happened here," lead singer katie gavin says; "i can feel it in the atmosphere." the remarkable, quiet "end of desire" details an unrequited love with biblical metaphors: "turn your head to the side, hold your gaze against mine, and there it is: a mark of the divine," she says, but "deep down [she] knows [she] is worshipping a false idol." this song transitions beautifully into the stunningly broken "everything." "everything's about you to me," katie laments over an explosive, beautifully emo climax. actually, dammit, why did i put this at 14? too low. favorites: around u, end of desire, everything, crying on the bathroom floor, winterbreak — unfavorites: outro, so special

ultraviolence.xx Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 13. THE XX - 'I SEE YOU' the first time i put on i see you, the first time i heard those disingenuous horns blare out of my headphones, i went, "did i lose them?" i wondered, had i lost the stunningly simple, quiet band i loved to the evil machinations of the group's producer stepping into the spotlight? the xx of yesteryear hid behind their hair, whispered their vocals into mics, eased notes out of their guitars with the intimacy and gentleness of lovers—who are these people, opening their album with brash, explosive horns? a new xx was emerging from the quiet carcass of its old incarnation, a new xx bolstered by jamie's increased presence. while "dangerous" did feel, and always has felt, a bit forced, most of the other songs here do a wonderful job of melding jamie's club influences with romy's and oliver's magical intimacy. "lips" takes the club-ready explorations of previous albums—songs like "reunion," for example—and magnifies them, sexes them up. lead single "on hold" bounces with a fresh, bright energy i haven't felt in an xx song before. the love song "i dare you" benefits from the propulsivity of jamie's beat, the way it contrasts with the floating guitars and vocals. only twice does jamie take his schtick too far: on the aforementioned "dangerous," for one, and on "brave for you," romy's tragic confrontation of her parents' deaths, which goes from a warbling, emotionally rich song to a schmaltzy power ballad with the addition of jamie's bombastic synths and strict metering. my absolute favorite here is "replica." everything melds together into a whirlpool of orgasmic wonder: oliver musing on whether he's learned from his parents' mistakes or whether he's doomed to repeat them; romy's ethereal voice floating in the background; jamie's steel drums. waaaah. favorites: replica, on hold, i dare you, lips, test me — unfavorites: dangerous, brave for you

ultraviolence.xx Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 12. MARCUS FISCHER - 'LOSS' i'm tired of writing, so i'm gonna keep it simple.mp3. ambient albums ftw! i've listened to this a ton while doing other things and it sets a really beautiful, peaceful atmosphere. even as your main focus, these songs are loaded with small details, crescendos and decrescendos, sounds passing across the stereo field, etc. meticulously crafted, beautiful, and full of different moods, from the somber "loss" to the bright "strand" to the serene "murmurations." highly recommended. favorites: murmurations, loss — unfavorites: none
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 11. BJÖRK - 'FLUTOPIA' this is my first björk listening experience. and there are a sh*t-ton of flutes, y'all. and quality. it's pretty bloated and would've benefit from some fat trimming (*cough* *cough* features creatures *cough) ok i'm tired af, those earlier write-ups took a lot out of me, not gonna do full sentences anymore. "the gate" is f***ing AMAZING and one of my favorite songs of the year. i love when it's floating in the high end and then the low end comes to SLAM that flute section in "saint" is unrivaled by any other flute section in existence "losss" is incredible i'm literrrrrrally obsessed with most of these songs favorites: saint, the gate, losss, arisen my senses, sue me, future forever — unfavorites: features creatures, ... utopia, maybe?
