ANGEL OLSEN - 'PHASES' angel olsen has one of the most unique, wonderful voices out there. it's so emotive and bluesy, and it captivates me in everything she records, whether it's at a whisper or at a growl. many of these songs, like the beach house B-sides album, have long been in existence and long been easy to find. (three of them were deluxe-rerelease tracks on one of her albums.) that being said, all the new ones are stunning—"fly on your wall"; the epic "special," which yearns to be added to my woman's tracklist; and the spare "sans." i am such a fan of this woman and her voice. favorites: special, fly on your wall, california — unfavorites: none 25 minutes ago, ultraviolence.xx said: 19. LORDE - 'MELODRAMA' i've already commented on this, but i am so team joel little. i would kill to hear what he would've done with some of these songs. (he probably would've cut those ridiculous minute-long outros.) that being said, lorde is unparalleled in the modern pop world in terms of lyricism. she has a scary-good ability to express something exactly the way it feels, to share her memories and make them feel like your own. she's never been the most capable vocalist—she's got a unique breathiness, but doesn't have astounding technical ability—but this album brings out wonderful vocal performances from her, like on "writer in the dark." favorites: green light, hard feelings, perfect places — unfavorites: sober ii 19 minutes ago, ultraviolence.xx said: 18. DAUGHTER - 'MUSIC FROM BEFORE THE STORM' daughter is one of my favorite bands, and not to disappear is one of my favorite albums ever. it's a testament to QUALITY that a video game soundtrack made my top 20 albums of the year. this album is full of gorgeous instrumental pieces—the bright "hope," for one, which sends me every time—and a couple songs with vocals. the clear standout is the last song, "a hole in the earth." "i have so much hurt inside me," she agonizes at the end of the track; "friend, make sense of me." also of note is the spunky "burn it down." lead singer elena tonra does a wonderful job of getting inside the heads of the video-game characters in her lyrics. favorites: a hole in the earth, hope, glass, i can't live here anymore — unfavorites: nope 8 minutes ago, ultraviolence.xx said: 17. DEMI LOVATO - 'TELL ME YOU LOVE ME' the queen of vocals is back with her best album yet! here, she delves more into the soul and R&B influences she's been afraid to commit to, but don't be afraid: there are still some traces of Pop Demi here, like the unholy bop "sexy dirty love" and the psychologically-astute smasher "daddy issues" with one of demi's most infectious choruses ever. my personal favorites are "only forever," a bassy, reverby tune with a stunning climax, and "lonely (feat. lil wayne)," where wayne brings his druggiest feature in recent memory and demi says "f***in" more than i've ever heard anyone say "f***in." (inb4 yall say i called SZA out on her swearing and not demi. racismé?) she gives her best vocal performance to date on "you don't do it for me anymore." the only thing that really doesn't fly is that slavery metaphor. yuck. favorites: only forever, daddy issues, lovely, you don't do it for me anymore — unfavorites: concentrate Just now, ultraviolence.xx said: 16. ST. VINCENT - 'MASSELECTROCUTION' this album, for whatever reason, took a long time to grow on me, but f***, did it! jack actually didn't do too bad here—good job, jack. (for once. ) but what gets me more than anything are her stunning lyrics. sometimes i'll sing along to songs when i'm listening to them and not register, in the slightest, what the singer is actually saying. this happens quite often, and it happened here with "smoking section." i noticed a line that struck me and i went to read the lyrics and realized they were actually stunning. (then i started to wonder why i don't process lyrics even when i have them head-to-toe memorized. weird.) but there are several songs here that i love—"slow disco," "smoking section," "dancing with a ghost" (which is beautiful and important, regardless of what @Unoriginal says), and "savior," as examples. the only exception is "pills," which makes me want to stab myself in the ears when the chorus starts. favorites: slow disco, smoking section, dancing with a ghost, savior, los ageless — unfavorites: pills pills pills!

Lazuli Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Phases was kinda cute I guess but it couldn't hold my attention anywhere as well as My Woman did Quote (he probably would've cut those ridiculous minute-long outros.) They're the best (except for Supercut's) But perhaps Joel could've stretched the songs out a bit and give them BRIDGES Not To Disappear was my #2 album of 2016 but I gave zero ***** about this "album" of theirs Tell Me You Love Me and MESSEDUCTION Quote unfavorites: pills pills pills! Fix it jesus

(bye @ you putting the 2nd best song as an unfavorite) TMYLM Concentrate is like my 4th favorite but the slave line kinda makes me uncomfortable too Masseduction is horrible but you put the two best songs in favorites so I’ll let it slide, but Pills is not even close to being the worst thing on that trash!

That's a significant shift in focus, emotion, and depth of thought that is astounding to me. She simply no longer sounds like the artist I used to love. What a shame.

Pink Matter Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Melodrama and St. Vincent are my faves from this set. Angel really doesn't do it for me unless she goes down the more rock-ish route and Phases wasn't iT. Demi snatching all these YEL's though
Lucas32 Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Phases was amazing. Even her "leftover" album is fantastic. Lorde and Annie too
