ultraviolence.xx Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 (edited) PART ONE arcade fire - 'everything now' i would love to have a sit-down with this band and figure out what the **** they were thinking when they decided to release this. i haven't given this more than three full run-throughs because there is absolutely nothing bringing me back. it feels both painstakingly try-hard and completely thrown together at the last minute. favorites: none unfavorites: all bleachers - 'gone now' save for the great lead single, this album is uninspired. most songs sound like pale imitations of bleachers song, evidenced by the fact that i've listened to this album at least seven times and couldn't tell you anything about what a fair chunk of the songs sound like. if he's doing something new, it's unpleasant: take the throat-ripping screech of the verses of "goodmorning." it hurts my throat just listening to it. some of the themes and lyric ideas aren't bad, but sonically, this album is an '80s-pastiched vanilla cake. more "rollercoaster," less . . . this, please. favorites: "don't take the money' unfavorites: "goodbye," "goodmorning" halsey - 'hopeless fountain kingdom' from the second halsey dropped the title of this album, i knew it was going to be a ****ing mess. badlands was flat enough without the pretentious overarching metaphor, and it appeared we were in for another go-round with that. sonically, this album steps out of its predecessor's born to die-lite soundscape, but it steps into a batch of influences that never quite melds together, which can make for good tracks, but not for a good overall product. the lead single, "needed me," features a DJ Mustard-sounding romp of an instrumental; second single "eyes closed" thrums with weeknd-y bass (and his co-writing is not helping her case); "lie" features the most ubiquitous rent-a-rapper of the year with an ominous piano riff that works much better in lana del rey's "summer bummer"; "walls could talk" is a wan imitation of the entire 2000s decade; "devil in me" rivals rihanna's "diamonds" in terms of is-that-sia? delivery. i do like the vocoder on the opening song and on "hopeless," though. (thanks, cashmere cat.) favorites: "needed me," "eyes closed," "hopeless" unfavorites: "angel on fire," "good mourning" the chainsmokers - 'memories . . . do not open' OK, i'm just gonna come out and say it: i loved "closer." and "don't let me down." something about them just slaps me in the lovestruck-nostalgic-teen feels. the chainsmokers proved they were capable of tapping into something special, proved they were capable of eliciting emotion with their synths and chord progressions, though their music was generic as all hell. this album, though, is just plain bad. cheap, plodding, derivative (of themselves!). when they wrote "bloodstream," they were too lazy to come up with a new drop, so they copied and pasted the one from "roses." and drew taggart is singing WAY too much on this album for how mediocre his voice is. hire chris martin again or something! even jhené aiko couldn't make their song good. on rare moments, they make it work: "young," with a delightfully '80s chorus; "don't say," with an unexpected drop; "it won't kill ya," with a chorus so full of low end you might sh*t yourself. favorites: "young," "don't say" unfavorites: "the one," "break up every night," "paris," "last day alive (feat. country boyband #3)" Edited December 13, 2017 by ultraviolence.xx
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 i'll do my other 4 disappointments later x
World Eater Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Everything Now was probably the biggest disappointment for me, and to think I was genuinely excited when the first single dropped Happy to see the tri-bi chanteuse, the producer who ruins almost anything he touches and the lovely "17.34 tip to tip" gentlemen on the list though
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 13, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 wow the effortless drags
Tom Vercetti Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Agreed most on Arcade's spot since I never expected anything from the other three.
