Eeveelution Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 (edited) 10. Goldfrapp - "Anymore" From: Silver Eye People like to call this basic, but if you don’t bop to this even a little you’re lying to yourself. The metallic, trudging production is a highlight, and additional help from The Haxan Cloak adds some grit to something which could almost slot perfectly into the first half of Supernature. Goldfrapp have never been detailed songwriters, their lyrics are not to describe, but rather conjure senses and feelings with carefully chosen adjectives and Alison’s evocative vocals and phrasing. But Alison is more direct than ever here, an intense propulsive song driven by lust, you can feel her growing more tense and impatient with every verse. It all culminates in “ICANTWAITICANTWAITICANTWAITANYMORE” a moment which leaves me in shambles, clutching onto my ruined wig even after countless listens. See also: "Tigerman" ; "Systemagic" 09. Katy Perry - "Bon Appétit" (feat. Migos) From: Witness No I will not subscribe, don't ask me to normalize. For people who don’t enjoy this: the song is a lot more enjoyable when you just accept Katy is a talentless lyricist and there is no hope for her. This is actually probably one of Witness’s better-written songs, if only because she chooses a theme and sticks to it. Katy has been fond of schlock-y, ‘anthematic’-sounding choruses as recently as last year’s Rise, but she mostly jettisons this approach on Witness, one of the album’s few saving graces. Bon Appétit is the perfect example of this, an exercise in restraint where the production bubbles and simmers without ever boiling over. Katy’s vocals have never sounded better, as she commits to the campy food metaphors with a knowing wink. Slight moments of excess, such as the unexpected second chorus before the Migos verse and the adlibs in the final chorus become all the more sweet. Bon appétit, baby. See also: "Déjà Vu" ; "Tsunami" 08. Feist - "Century" From: Pleasure A century. How long is that? The amount of time we were waiting on Miss Leslie Feist to release a follow-up to Metals. Of course, all is forgiven when you deliver one of your absolute best. This song is so interesting, structurally. It begins with an energy that does not relent, becoming nosier and more intense, until it stops. Jarvis Cocker comes along to deliver a monotone, campy spoken-word on like.. the passing of time and fragility of life. Feist then summons a broken social scene’d army of people to just chant and clang instruments louder and louder, it gets really - See also: "Wish I Didn't Miss You" ; "Get Not High, Get Not Low" 07. Slowdive - "Sugar for the Pill" From: Slowdive It’s been a long time waiting for Slowdive. Not especially taken seriously when they released in the ‘90s, over the years they have earned a substantial cult following and respect for pioneering the shoegazing movement. Listening to Sugar for the Pill it’s like they’ve barely been gone at all, the song’s opening guitar riff as sweet and warm as a “honey, I’m home!” after a long day at work. However, if you listen to the lyrics it becomes clear this was inspired by a decaying relationship. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. But with the honeyed guitar riff which unravels into the second verse, and Rachel Goswell’s stunning background vocals it’s easy to forget that, and this stands as one the most beautiful songs of the year. See also: "Slomo" 06. Alvvays - "Dreams Tonite" From: Antisocialites “If I saw you on the street / would I have you in my dreams tonight?” Is the question Molly Rankin posits to the listener on Antisocialites’ second track. It’s something I do wonder about the people in my life: if I hadn’t been lumped together with them through sequences of events and chance, would I have found a way to meet them somehow? Existential thoughts aside, Dreams Tonight is brilliant, and Molly could be full well be singing in gibberish and it would still be a masterpiece. If nothing else, 2017 was a solid year for dream pop, and this song is perhaps the dreamiest and poppiest of all, with its wistful lyricism and sumptuous hooks. In a make-or-break period for a blog hype’d band such as Alvvays, this song proved that they are here for the long haul. Eeveelution Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 (edited) 05. Lana Del Rey - "When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing" From: Lust 4 Life Political songs are difficult to master, and many artists sadly don’t have the talent to pull them off. Lana doesn’t try and make grand and sweeping statements, oversimplifying conflicts or railing us to try and change the world. She simply reminds us that, even in the most difficult of times, we got up and kept moving. Musically, World at War is one of Miss Del Rey’s most ambitious tracks to date, a bizarre meeting point between sparse folk and the “muddy trap” influences that dominate earlier songs on the record. Lana’s witchcraft on trump may not have succeeded, but this song works like a charm (that was so bad, im sorry). See also: "Cherry" ; "Heroin" 04. Kelela - "LMK" From: Take Me Apart This a song where I always forget how good it is until I listen, and I'm scalped. Kelela has always been direct: “you’re my bitch tonight!” she sang on 2015’s Gomenasai, but on LMK she has a newfound confidence that makes this song work so well. She knows she’s that bitch. She knows she ended careers with that pre-chorus. It was the perfect lead single, showing a new side to Kelela and leaving us in anticipation of what else she could possibly have up her sleeve for Take Me Apart. It may not be the most experimental song in her catalog but who cares when it’s such a damn bop? It ain’t that deep, by the way.. See also: "Enough" ; "Altadena" 03. Charli XCX - "Lipgloss" (feat. CupcakKe) From: Number 1 Angel Charli being ‘the future of pop’ is kind of a jargon-y phrase which gets thrown around a lot, but this song manages to be as catchy as any song on the radio while sounding nothing at all like today’s hits. This is mainly due the sugary, hypercaffeinated excess of the production, some of SOPHIE and A.G. Cook’s best work to date. Cupcakke serves up not one, but two unforgettable verses, delivering instantly iconic rhymes: “freaky lil bitch when I’m out with Charli / yeah we keep more eyes on us than the show iCarly”. But let's not forget that Lipgloss wouldn’t be Lipgloss without Charli and her gift for sticky-icky, irresistible hooks. It’s some curious pop alchemy which results in not only one of the strongest tracks in Charli’s catalog, but one of the best of the year. See also: "ILY2" ; "Roll With Me" 02. Lorde - "Homemade Dynamite" From: Melodrama Melodrama’s peak and Tove lo’s most notable contribution to music thus far, Homemade Dynamite manages to feel like a complete bop even at such a sedate tempo. i love the chorus with its Lana-inspired stuttering, and I love how she romanticises the grimy, claustrophobic atmosphere of a house party, even making a fatal car crash sound beautiful in a few concise lines. Not talking about the remix btw. See also: "Sober" ; "The Louvre" 01. Julie Byrne - "I Live Now as a Singer" From: Not Even Happiness I feel like it can be the toughest to articulate why we like our favourite music - how do I do justice to such an excellent song? I think it was March when I realised I Live Now as a Singer was the best song of 2017. I was walking home alone after a long day and it was rainy, but it didn’t matter cause I was listening to this Godly hymn. I think I knew it would not be topped. Julie Byrne spends most of Not Even Happiness exhaling her thoughts over fingerpicked guitar, but on I Live Now she languishes in synthesizers as though it represents a new beginning in her music and her life. The lyrics here are scarce but every word is chosen perfectly, there something unspeakably beautiful about her voice almost cracking as she sings “when I was nowhere close to forgiving myself”. The song isn’t all sad though, after dragging her life across the USA and keeping no key, Julie reflects: “At night beneath the universe, you walk with me / Shall I be ever near the edge of your mystery.” Julie reminds us that, even in a year such as 2017 where many of us struggled, there is always something good on the horizon, even if it’s as simple as the night’s sky.
