Vxspertine Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 18. St. Vincent – Masseduction Quote In Los Ageless, the waves they never break They build and build until you don't have no escape But how can I leave? I just follow my hood to the sea, go to sleep Spoiler Score: 7/10 (7.3/10) Trinity: Los Ageless, Pills, Slow Disco Worst track: Garbageboy @Joey Coco won. I didn't know much about her before this album was released and I was actually going to skip it, but then I saw how much acclaim and hype it was getting here so I jumped on the hype train, and I was pretty impressed at first to be honest. I loved this initially. The pretty instant hooks on some of the songs on the album captured my attention, and I think I was also pretty blinded by the hype. I thought it'd end up higher on this list, but a lot of the songs got old very quickly, and honestly the whole album aged like milk. The main problem with this album is how try-hard it is. Tracks like Sugarboy are way too much imo and have been too much for me since the first time I heard them, and a lot of tracks in the middle of the first and second half are just not much more than basic and generic. On the other hand tracks like Los Ageless and Pills are among my favorite tracks of the year and have amazing hooks. It's a pretty random mixed bag for sure, and I don't really come back to it much as an album, but it's still a lot better and a lot more exciting than other pop records that came out this year and I think it deserves some of the acclaim it's been getting.
Vxspertine Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) 17. Zola Jesus – Okovi Quote One small thread keeps you hostage To the better side of death One small chain a ghost in limbo It's all for the best Spoiler Score: 8/10 Trinity: Witness, Ash To Bone, Exhumed Worst track: Wiseblood I didn't know who she was before this release. Right off the bat the first things you're introduced with when you listen to this album, are the beautiful Doma and the amazingly intense Exhumed, 2 tracks that I think are some of the most important tracks on the album. With really intense and interesting lyrics and really intense and beautiful vocal performances, this album is pretty amazing. The first half of the album is excellent. I love songs like Witness and Ash to Bone because of her amazing vocal delivery, Exhumed's grand and dramatic strings work amazingly with her lyrics and vocals, and Siphon's instrumentation works really well with the mood of the album. While the second half is not as good imo (her vocals sound kind of lazy and it effects the instrumentation, and it gets pretty dreadful at some points) this album is still amazing and her sound is very intriguing. Really looking forward to see how her sound develops in the future. Edited December 17, 2017 by Vxspertine
theblackestday Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) You already know how I feel about the two awful albums Melodrama and Asseduction Tried getting into Pleasure but I couldn’t It’s so boring it was a nightmare revisiting it Okovi Edited December 17, 2017 by theblackestday
Vxspertine Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 16. Arca – Arca Quote No, no quiero vivir preso de la melancolía Spoiler Score: 7.5/10 (7.65/10) Trinity: Reverie, Coraje, Fugaces Worst track: Piel Arca came thru with his vocal debut on his self-titled album. This album is strangely catchy (pretty much like his previous efforts) and his vocals deliver and add a lot to his sound. He has a really unique production style and it's been manifesting differently on every release he put out so far, and this album is no exception. His vocal delivery is really heartbreaking on most of these tracks, he pours so much emotion into his performances, and it makes the songs even more gorgeous. I just really hope he will be changing up his production style at some point, thorough this album I kept getting the feeling of "I've heard this before" since he didn't really switch up his sound much, some tracks on this album and also on other efforts he was a part of this year have some of the same sounds he already used on past albums and same production style. While Reverie is like one of the best songs of the year, Piel is pretty unlistenable and Miel And Child are both not very good.
theblackestday Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Arca Not you dragging Miel and Piel but praising Coraje

volition Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Definitely feel like Melodrama is being overrated by critics, though obviously it’s still a good album. The exuberant praise confused me for a long time and I kinda think it’s retrospective of her debut which I personally thought was better. Pleasure and Arca are great though Century and Desafío are personal highlights from each. Masseduction comes nowhere near her previous albums but I still like it Okovi is also really great too but Wiseblood is really awful, I can’t stand that song. Melodically it’s very dull and unpleasant (to me).
theblackestday Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) Wiseblood slander is not allowed on this site, tf? @artangels @ChapelHooker come clock these hoes Edited December 17, 2017 by theblackestday
Tom Vercetti Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Pure Heroine deserved Melodrama's acclaim more, i'll agree on that. Sugarboy slander eh. Tbh, it drained out pretty quick. Too sugary. I'm seeing this common criticism of Masseduction being overplayed but idk, I didn't have that issue. Okovi was my first Zola album as well and I liked some songs from it. I like those Arca highlights.

Century and Desafio are both great I hate the abrupt ending on Century though Wiseblood is definitely the worst song on the album, her vocals are so lazy tbh 1 hour ago, theblackestday said: Wiseblood slander is not allowed on this site, tf? @artangels @ChapelHooker come clock these hoes 35 minutes ago, artangels said: If it doesn't make you wiserdoesntmakeyoustrongerdoesntmakeyoulivealittlebitwadrudoiiin 39 minutes ago, Tom Vercetti said: Pure Heroine deserved Melodrama's acclaim more, i'll agree on that. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 18, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 18, 2017 Did you listen to more Zola after getting into Okovi? Taiga was kinda meh but had its moments, but her other releases are SO GOOD
Lazuli Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 MASSEDUCTION Okovi was kinda cute but I didn't really revisit it much Same with Arca, but it's more laborious
MP2K Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Out of Production, Arca doesn't really do it for me. I do hope so one day. I might have to get into Zola Masseduction - I need to finish it but it's great.
SLIME Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 You half dragging all these albums is kinda sending me too sljsks I wasn't ready But I can back most of them being where they are still, only things that triggered me were Arca over Annie and Nobody Knows Me Like the Piano being a Process lowlight :( (Feist is 100x more boring fight me) And lmfao mumble pop I might steal that. Keep em coming

Keep em coming I didn't realise I was dragging everything until I finished writing everything Annie's album freefell down my list for a reason Arca's album had a solid spot in my top 20 since he dropped it. The Piano song is the most generic song on that album, SNS #15 - #11 coming up in a bit
